Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose. Thornton on the first PP unit. Weak. Nice work keefe. Do better.

I agree with you. This is what has bothered me the most in the last week. Keefe pulled the "best line on paper" maneuver. Galchenyuk has worked so hard since coming here and was getting hot again toward the end of the regular season. Ditto Engvall. Nash should have been slowly integrated on the 4th line after an injury or to replace a slumping player (Thornton). Do not mess with past chemistry at the start of the playoffs.
This is a ridiculous take. Every coach in the league starts Riley Nash in that spot last night, just as they started Hyman (also returning from injury). Had they not, all we'd hear today is how we went out and got Nash and didn't even use him and how stupid the Leafs are.
We lost a close game in which we lost our captain in a gruesome freak incident while our opponent gave us everything they had. The Habs always play us hard. The games are almost always close. It was never going to be a sweep. Engvall and Gally were most certainly not the difference last night.

We will come back. Saturday will be ours.

Matthews showed a lot of heart and desire. Now way he doesnt light it up soon

Heart is obviously needed, but it takes more than that to win. I've been claiming all year that Matthews is arguably the 2nd best player in the league, but he didn't play like it in game 1. He needs to be more dominant. Rush the puck more, drive the net, play physical, bear defenders, etc.

MacKinnon and all the other top players are playing like it. I need to see more from Matthews, and don't even get me started on Marner. He's not even close to being an $11 million man and never has been, but it is what it is at this point

Who's the best player in the NHL? Can't possibly be pointless, lost 4-1 to Winnipeg McDavid.

Montreal 57 hits Leafs 27 . The metrics/skill lovers just do not understand what playoff hockey is about. Excuses excuses excuses, Tavares got hurt its a tough break suck it up and play harder. I think they may have to consider a name change from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Toronto Dairy Queens cause all they serve up is soft product.

MIA Thornton, Holl, Marner, Mihkayev, Reily, Brodie, Nash, Simmons

We all know the answer to that question, and we also know one game doesn't change that fact, just like one game doesn't change anything for Matthews. All I said is he didn't play like the 2nd best player in the league, which I think he can be.

I'm a little confused about Sandin - how in the world did the kid get blown past that easily in that short of a distance? This is supposed to be our top puck moving (mobile) defenceman? That play and his lack of any containment on Byron with a big head-start is confusing and disappointing.

I bet you thought this was really good, eh?

My post from Wednesday:

I would definitely have Galchenyuk in over Thornton.

Also not really sure about having Nash as our #3 center. No idea how good he'll be... but my worry is that he's not up to speed having missed so much time and being thrown directly into a playoff game. I would have gone with Brooks or even Engvall.
Nothing wrong with having thornton down low on pp2 but at the point on pp1 is a massive coaching error.

He was on for the entire PP and gassed. Thornton gave the puck away, it's not Sandin's fault.

Maybe they start him but maybe not 3rd line C, Nash is more of a 4th line C with PK ATOI.

JT coughed the puck up , Sandin didn't recognize that he was defending against one of the leagues fastest players. Lots of blame to be passed around. Sandin is going to be a great defender in a few years, I could see him as an elite PP QB.

He made an inexperienced mistake.

Uhhh.. has anyone else experienced no teasing from your Hab friends? I got two good buddies and a son in law who are great at giving me a hard time after the Habs beat the Leafs but total radio silence ... WHAT IS THIER GAME!!!!???

Sandin is responsible for how Sandin handles his coverage. Not Thornton.

Tie him up, trip him, off-set the penalty..

The flail on your belly reach around poke-check is a junior move that doesn't fly in the NHL.

I'm not saying it's all his fault at all - but yes normally a play like that is very harmless given his positioning and massive head start. I hope he was just super gassed, ah well.

New year, different team. What’s the point of digging up a grave that has zero impact on the success of this years team? 1 game at a time. They still have to beat us 3 more times in the next 6. Really not a break glass panic scenario yet

Nobody is panicking. Simply pointing out that the exact same issues that plagued this group last year vs Columbus, were evident again last night. Badly out hit vs a trapping team that congested the neutral zone and stooped the Leafs from making pretty passes. The result was another lifeless offensive effort, despite 4 powerplay opportunities, 3x 2 on 1's (all botched) and numerous high danger dances in which highly paid forwards didn't show enough scoring class to finish.

You also said ALL the other players did, yet the best player in the game was pointless.

For the record Matthews looked fine IMHO. He's not gonna score every single game.

Montreal can't score. They generated next to nothing last night. If we can just get our offence to break out a little, this will be over in 5. Somebody else, besides the obvious candidates, needs to step up.

Nash is not out of place at all at 3C. I know we all need to scapegoat the hell outta the game but this whole 'If only we had played Pierre Engvall/ Alex Galchenyuk instead of Riley Nash' stuff is cringe. It was never gonna happen and I would stake my home on the fact that it won't happen tomorrow either.

Sandin has to pivot there and change momentum while already gassed and while Byron is already skating straight down. It's not his fault. It's Thornton's. He gave the puck away and put Sandin in that position. Sandin played it fine given the situation, he tripped him up and players don't normally score while on their knees but as we saw, Byron scored a great goal.

Between the spelling mistakes, terrible joke, terrible take in general.. this is up there with one of the dumbest posts I've seen. Bravo sir.
