It's too bad we couldn't have made opening night more of a statement game. Look at Colorado. Stomp on Chicago opening night as scripted, points night all around and start the season on a positive note. No strange rustiness, not ready to play, bullshit nonsense. But I guess that's why they're the defending champions and the Leafs are the Leafs.
Toronto always plays down to opponents.

If I have to hear in May / June after the 1st round playoff loss "It's a learning opportunity" I will likely throw my remote through the TV screen.

I think a lot of our thoughts can be summed up into this image.

But GM and Coach choose the team.

Honestly not blaming Keefe on this loss but it is really the same old story over and over again.

It is just a game and the boys will better.

Under vastly different coaches and GM's.

At this point, it is up to the players. The coach and GM may take the fall for it, but the failure of the Leafs at this point falls on the players being able to hold up their end of the bargain, especially when it counts. So far, they haven't.

Only one game so it will get better but today they weren't even outplayed. They beat themselves, as they often do when they lose... And the guys who have been through that pain time and time again were at the forefront of it. So what have they really learned?

Just too loose and played down to the opponent once again. Better tighten up for tomorrow.

Playing down to the opponent makes it sound like it was an effort issue or they weren't trying hard enough.

They tried... But trying is not enough.

We are beyond lack of effort issues. It is not really a concern for this team on most nights anymore. But this is a team that needs consistent execution of at least the fundamentals and the fundamentals were lacking.

Kerfoot, Holl, Muzzin, Engvall...guys a lot of us spoke about on the boards as guys we could/should move to change it up and he brings them back...partly on the GM, partly on the team but you can see why the fans are a little more pissed off than they should be at a game 1.

It's not a complete overhaul that occurred in the off-season, if they're a great team they should hit the ground running and pummel an inferior opponent like Colorado did tonight.

Instead guys looked loosey goosey, playing shinny or having a leisure skate.

They always just find strange ways to fall flat on their faces in dramatic fashion, like the horrible no show vs Buffalo at the Outdoor Game, dropping 2x games to the Canadiens last year, that 8-1 loss to Tampa before the first round matchup. They just have high highs and big party wins and then they just track meet it other times.

Jesus our D-core looks slow

There's a lot of very talented, young fast players in this division, especially up front and we're going to get eaten alive if we can't find a way to slow guys down

Muzzin looks like he's hanging on by the skin of his teeth and Holl looks like Holl again, they aren't good enough for the top 4 and I'm praying Liljegren and Sandin can pick up the slack or were going to have some serious problems

Should of moved Muzzin when we had the chance

Sandin looks stronger but looks like he's really thinking playing RD vs just having it be natural on his LD.

It's clear we're forcing this.

That was unfortunately a pretty sloppy game all around. Keefe is fine to call them out though obviously it's the coach's job to make sure they're ready to go for game one.

The first line needs to absolutely play better than that too - they seem to always have a bit of early season rust, and obviously they're going to be more than fine once things get going, but they really should be expected to be leading the team right from the first shift.

Nylander looked pretty good

Can't they waive Holl and call up Mete?

Sandin is an awful skater. Tired of pretending he's not. His lateral quickness is not there and he got burned by some average speed guys on the Habs today.

We need Liljegren back, he slots in on the right and Sandin can play the left and I don't know about you but I'm more than willing to take some growing pains over the **** I just watched

I'm not sure about it cap wise but I'd call Mete up, he's a very good skater and we need his mobility more than whatever it is Holl does

Well he did miss almost all of training camp....which could play some role.

On a game, but not Leaf related, note since when has Carey Price thought he was a cowboy? Dafuq was with that hat??
If you play in Montreal you grow a liking towards silly hats I guess. Ask PK. Dude looks like Sabrina the Teenage Witch 80% of the time.

Saw in the highlights Marner was throwing his patented high risk passes looking for magical plays and two resulted in odd man rushes the other way; one of them a goal against. Same *&^* that has cost the team the last two postseason elimination games.
