Two core peices need to go. Nylander is one, and Matthews probably #2. Giving Matthews 15m or whatever he'll blackmail from this team is inexcusable.
Nylander? Hes been the best of the core, Matthews hasnt even reached his peak yet! The team ain't going anywhere with the Taveras contract, that's where the issue is, another 2 more seasons of crippling the teams cap. It will be a revolving door of 3rd and 4th line affordable players, which ain't going to cut it. When the Taveras money opens up then the Leafs will have the opportunity to secure two bona-fide players, that's when I think they will have a serious shot at the cup. Hang in there, 3 more years.

No, as the BeeGees sang, "It's only words, and words are all I have..."

Sammy is not a first string goalie. Nice guy though, and that's what's really important in Toronto, right?

Was that Beegees or Boyzone? Either doesn't matter

Sammy always has a nice response.

Tampa scored 3 even strength goals.
Nylander was on the ice for 2 of them.

He was better than he's been most of the season, but he wasn't exactly"on" tonight.

1 power play goal, 4 total shots, 0 hits, 0 blocked shots in 16 minutes doesn't exactly scream good playoff game to me in terms of effort.

We have people like Cleetus saying that Matthews and Marner have to be better:

Matthews with 2 assists, 0 goals against, 5 hits, 1 blocked shot, 3 takeaways, 18 minutes played and:

Marner with 3 assists, 0 even strength goals against, 3 shots, 2 hits, 1 blocked shot in 22 minutes with 4:33 penalty kill.

I mean, can those players be better?
Yes.

Did they play poorly?

Not in the slightest.

is that you Kyle?

gotta be better!

Also not sure why the hell Nylander is being taken off PP1? I understand that O'Reilly scored, but I would argue that when Willy is on, he is our best PP player. And he is always on in the playoffs.

Keefe galaxy brain BS like usual.
Because no one else (other than Tavares) go to the front of the net.

Matthews Marner and Nylander were the best 5v5 forwards among both teams fyi

The only part of the team that deserves to be labeled horrible is the bottom 6, as usual (and obviously the defence and goalie, as usual).

Nylander just hopped on the ice for Marner on one of the goals against.

Agree completely bad start. The jumbling of who was on the ice was a bad way to go in in my opinion. Cirelli is good, but he's not god. If cooper wants to start his 4th against your 1st let it ride. Holl was kept up to PK and they scored 4. I don't have numbers of how many he was on the ice for, but goals are going to be a premium against vas. So put a guy like Lilly in who might make a mistake but will also make 5 plays to make up for it. Just my opinion though.

Disclaimer: not blaming holl for the loss, just don't think he should be in, even with Lilly's slide the last 6~ weeks

Holl is just a classic goofball in the Aki Berg, Cory Cross tradition. Big guy who is alright but prone to a lapse here and there and doesn’t have the instinct in him to use his frame to full advantage. Mileage varies.

All I know is that the geniuses on this board, including Keefe, thought that sitting ZAR for Knies would prevent us from giving up a terrible turnover in a key moment.

I watched ZAR hyperventilating with his eyes closed before puck drop and then do a blind backhand pass to a Tampa player for the first goal in the first 2 minutes to set the tone.

How about we play our best player and play to win, eh?

Overcoaching. Even with the challenge. No need

first period marner floating around like f***ing peter pan's fairy giving up the puck on the slightest touch and lobbing it to the other team so they can come back and score it when marner was on the ice for like three minutes

f*** these random ass assists.

So we aren't sweeping Tampa.

Looking forward to Keefe's adjustments for Game 2. It's his forte, after all.

Blender lines since the TDL so we knew EXACTLY who to play for the playoffs and EXACTLY where they need to be playing, amiright?

I said from the beginning if we win, it will be in spite of Keefe, not because of him, and score one for Cooper tonight, but not too much credit. Keefe pooched himself before the game even started with his roster and line decisions.

Let's see if he smartens up, or if Dubas/Spezza/Shanahan step in to save this Team from Keefe before they go into a 2-0 hole.

Keefe is a great coach......... for Arizona or Anaheim. He has no business coaching the Toronto Damn Maple Leafs.

On to game 2. They laid an egg and buckled under the pressure. Here's for them getting their shit together and coming strong in game 2, with Liljegren and Knies in the lineup, like they should have been tonight.
