Could be the the coach, then again, this story seems to be the same with a number of coaches this team and previous Leafs teams have had.

Knies and Liljegren HAVE TO be in next game no matter what and I wouldn't be against giving Woll the start in net next game either. That would be a risk that could blow up in your face or maybe Woll becomes the next Binnington and provides insane goaltending that helps the Leafs win.

First period was garbage, looked nervous and jittery and overwhelmed. Thought they looked excellent in the second period and I allowed myself to get excited for a comeback like they’d showed this year to be possible of doing, unti the two brutal penalty calls (although they weathered the first one nicely and gained momentum and a pp from it). The second phantom pp and the Bunting idiocy screwed up everything though. 3rd period was just wasting time from both teams. Wonder if Bunting gets more than a game.
It’s just the first game, albeit a crap one. I hope we get new refs for the next one. Still believe the boys can get it done.

If anyone said Leafs starting goalie Samsonov would give up 6 goals on 29 shots posting a .793 sv% and be pulled after 2 periods in game #1 you would say that's ridiculous.

Sadly he looked like a goalie with only 1 playoff win to his name tonight.

This outcome makes game #2 an almost must win for Toronto or this series is all but over.

Goaltending the biggest question mark heading into the playoffs is still unanswered.

He’s now a career 1-7 in the playoffs and Woll comes in for Game #3 if the Leafs lose Thursday night.

I understand that but that poster usually only comes on to attack other posters. He very rarely offers his opinion on anything.
I’m not ready to give up but you have to admit that it gets harder every year hoping and wishing it will be different. We hear them say after losing last year that it sucks, blah blah blah and then they come out like this tonight with a totally disgraceful effort.

I don't know how you could lay any of this at the feet of Matthews, and to a lesser extent Marner (he's a primary penalty killer and Tampa scored 4 power play goals).

Keefe repeats all of the same mistakes. On top of that, decides to shuffle Bunting to the top line, who pulls a Kadri. Jarnkrok scores immediately returning to the line. Predictable. Nothing ever improves with Keefe.

Beyond that, refs were the shit show we all expected. They tried to rob the game at every opportunity; but, must have been shocked when the Leafs were on board to lose and go home.

You're absolutely right they haven't done that in the past - but the law future games are still undecided,.and the guys are older.snd the lineup is different . Leafs crushed the lightening game 1 last series and it didn't help.

This one really hurt boys. Been looking forward all year to tonight. TB looking weak coming in, they lose Hedman, and Cernak, and we just fold over.

Good news is, only one loss, doesn't matter by how much. That being said, our D was awful. Gio in particular was brutal, Holl and Reilly not good either. I would play Lily.

Sammy wasn't too bad, but he wasn't any good either. The reffing was a complete joke, but what else is new? We need to rebound right away or we are screwed. Hated the lack of pushback in the 3rd though. Had them down to four D. You have get the puck in deep and punish them on the wall. No heart at all, TB would have killed us in the reverse situation.

Please put Nylander with Mathews. You can load it up with Marner, or keep Calle there but Nylander really is wasted playing a slow game with JT. When Mathews and Nylander are playing Willy is the trigger man (and scores goals). I'm tired and losing series after series riding with Mathews and Marner together. Try something different Keefe (like sitting Holl).

Nylander absolutely has to be given the most amount of minutes, in the best possible situations for the rest of the series. He's the only one that actually looks like he's trying to sort shit out within the big 4.

Tavares is a waste of space in the playoffs. Disgusting signing.

Marner is absolutely mentally scarred by previous playoffs and is absolutely petrified.

Matthews generally loses faith in his linemates and tries to do it all himself. Honorable, but the wrong decision.

No idea why the Leafs started so poorly. This is a matchup you've known for months vs the Team that eliminated you last season. That should be more than enough motivation to get on your horse and get going. Not sure if it's a coaching issue or the core in Toronto is just rotten and unfixable at this point. Either way it's unacceptable.

We came out guns blazing and won 5-0 last series. Still lost. I don't know, obviously I would rather them start off strong again than this ridiculous effort tonight but it is still just one game. However, I fully expect us to lose at this point. I hope I'm wrong and they're free to prove it to me.
