The Leafs haven't been great defensively so far this season. But the skaters haven't been so bad as to justify giving up 9 goals against in only 2 games.

Goaltending has been subpar by a greater degree than we should expect as normal
For sure it has but our team defense is still sub par.

The core has not been the problem. It's been a systems problem so far. Nylander has been as good as you can ask for, Tavares has been better than most of last season, Matthews can't pot one but he's been outright dominant with possession, and Marner at least seems to be trying but I feel like he isn't clicking with Matthews right now.

Our problems are:

Thornton - too slow for L1 and doesn't fit well at all
Andersen - He's leaking goals
Barabanov - Keefe doesn't trust him and he's been invisible
Spezza - Been relatively ineffective so far
Holl - Not doing much, he doesn't look like the confident player he did at the start of last year
Muzzin - Rusty, this I'm confident will get fixed
Bogosian - Doesn't seem to know the system yet, would like to see Lehtonen get in
Brodie on the power play - I think Muzzins shot would be a better threat

I think the rest besides the first two will work itself out in a short period of time. Thornton should be moved down relatively soon but Andersen I am not so sure he figures it out within the time we need him to figure it out.

I don't hate Vesey, but he wouldn't be on my top 6, neither would Thornton. I'd move Mikheyev up to play with Matthews and Marner. And Hyman up to the 2nd line. Thornton to center Kerfoot and Robertson. And build your 4th line with the guys left.

Agreed entirely. Play the top two lines near even minutes. The discrepancy so far has been abysmal in terms of minutes played vs production.

First line

Kerfoot / Tavares / Nylander

Second line

Hyman / Matthews / Marner

Third line

Mikheyev / Thornton / Vesey

Fourth Line

Simmonds / Spezza / Barabanov

Matthews and Marner need someone to do some dirty work for them, as they did last season. JT and Willy simply need another player with some skill and vision on their wing and that line will have an incredible season.

I really want to see this team with Jack in net and Robertson and Hyman in the top 6.

Lines are brutal. Goaltending even worse.

I’m not worried about this team, we’ll figure it out. Vesey and Thornton won’t be top
6 for long, and if Andersen doesn’t play better, Campbell will take his job until he does. Guarantee he doesn’t let in 4+ goals tomorrow night.

he’s ripping into them as he should and they should. He’s so right
He isn't saying anything different than most of the knowledgeable hockey people here haven't been saying for at least two to three years now. We gave Kadri away when he is exactly the type of heart we needed, We lack a Tucker, Roberts Yuskevich etc types. These ballerinas are annoying especially in their post game news conferences. Boring pond hockey ugh, get in there and muck it out. Even McDavid and Drais, get their noses dirty. You think Marner would drop the gloves like Ryan Nugent Hopkins did last year......not a chance

22.5 million dollars between #34 and #16. They need to lead every night and they don't. Maybe with age that will come, but I don't get that vibe from them.

And to think the reason they didn't sign max deals with the Leafs is because they want to hit UFA earlier to get more money...are these the types of player to lead your team to a championship? They are supposed to feast on the kinds of teams like the Sens, but on a night like this, it seems like they don't give a damn...meanwhile McDavid destroyed the Canucks last night with 3 goals and 4 points.

I hope these two show up tomorrow night.

Why is Thornton playing way more than Tavares and Nylander? 2:30 more than JT lol. Keefe please, you were the chosen one.

really looking forward to Thornton on a b2b after playing 18:30

Judging by the discussion in this thread, the correct move is to trade Marner for futures and sign Abdelkader.

Matthews seems engaged most nights but ever since mitch got his contract he hasn't been the same. He needs to work it out or pack his bags.

We have to be realistic
Andersen is one of the most fragile number one goaltenders in the league
Rielly is a great offensive dman but terrible defensively and has a muffin of a shot
Dubas overpaid in negotiations and it’s showing by not being able to make changes because we have no cap
and overpaying Brodie 3-4 million then hes actually worth didnt help either.

Thornton has won as much as Marleau has, so if you think he's going to be a Justin Williams for us - no.

Secondly, if he doesn't find a firm footing as a contributing member on the ice, I'm not sure how he can take over the room...
I’m not sure there is a place for him on the ice. I’m really nervous about him against those western teams.

Maybe he could join the coaching staff.

No trade marner for a high end d or a solid 4d and a good two way heavy forward. Or he can get his head out of his backside and play the way most fans know he can.

I think I'd like Kerfoot in the top 6 on the wing. I think he has some solid tools that would contribute to the Tavares / Willy line. I just don't like his lack of presence at center... Totally agreed regarding Hyman. He needs to be glued to Matthews and Marner. He did all the dirty work last year so that those guys could be in a position to score. He did nothing wrong and got demoted for political reasons.

Kerfoot / Tavares / Nylander
Hyman / Matthews / Marner
Mikheyev / Thornton / Robertson or Vesey

I'd love to see that given the disparity in minutes Keefe appears to want to play his top 6.

For sure it has but our team defense is still sub par.

It was today, for like half the game. It wasn't on Wednesday for most of the game.

Goaltending hasn't been good at all in either game.

If Andersen had something around a .900, I would say that he matches our defense right now. Not great, and definitely needs to improve, but enough to win both of these games soundly with the way the other team played. Andersen has an .839. That is not on our defense. That is on him.

Thornton, Barbanov, Mikheyev etc dont really matter. This team will live or die with the overall play of the big 4. If they play well the leafs will win game if they play like tonight ,(minus JT) they will get beaten like they did tonight.

It makes sense as they take up like half the cap space of the roster.

I'd rather just put Hyman back on a line that should have never been tinkered with after last year's production... And play that line accordingly. Which right now, means less than the Willy / Tavares line, that is out producing them significantly.
