I'm coming to the conclusion that you need to break Matthews/Marner up to truly shake up the core of the team ... but trading either is a hard deal to win.

This team needs a complete overhaul of its star players. You can't keep plugging in individual players while keeping the core and hoping they change. What typically happens is the players who are brought on take on the personality of their star players. Two or three of Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Reilly and Nylander need to go.

Tonight's meltdown started with a great takeaway from Engvall on the PK who sped up the ice on a turnover. Not 10 feet beyond his own blueline with pressure on, he decides to lateral a pass to center ice which results in a goal against. He could have skated further before assessing options. He could have taken the win and curled the puck down into the corner to burn off another 20 seconds. But no.
This is a system issue, they are taught to waste as much time even if it’s riskier. Standard hockey is you just shoot it down the ice when the opp gets close.

If I'm Toronto, I go to Matthews and get the long term commitment. If I have this, Marner is punted. Keep in mind, whatever we get for Marner also comes with cap savings and the culture change you're looking for.

Agreed. This team from management down to the player level has no idea what clock management looks like when a team isn't trying to actively possess the puck. Send the puck down. Create battles. Increase distance to your net. Leverage time. But nope. Hold the puck and do goofy shit with it.

Yeah I would do the same.

Marner is still going to do well wherever he goes though, so winning that deal is tough. People hate the Kadri deal, this could be almost worse (especially if Marner figures it out in the playoffs).

where is deke and other dubas and keefe fan boys when things are tough? Nowhere to be found, as usual. Gibson, make it happen as Fleury had done it a few years back lol.

I just remembered that DUBAS exposed Jared Mcann (who has 5G + 3A = 8P in 9G by the way) in order to protect HOLL.
What. The. Actual. ****!!!!

If we made a list of the players Dubas let go to keep Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Tavares together, you could probably construct a better team..it's actually embarrassing how many great players they have just let go for nothing.

and lastly i'm tired of the non stop pimping of Tavares , the guys done nothing outside of net front on the pp , he's freaking invisible even strength so i'm left to wonder why mgmt has sent orders down to the media to constantly fluff him

Still early but that looks ugly.

it's a long season and they'll pick it ii p again but man the core needs to change, and with contracts and everything it has to be Nylander
Everyone is too comfy here - time to change that

This team is the opposite of gritty.
What do you call trading for Nick Foligno instead of Taylor Hall? And paying MORE?

What do you call Simmonds, Clifford, Muzzin...NICK RITCHIE?

Zero clue if the team is gritty or not but no doubt that the last few years, Dubas has made failed moves to go in that direction.
