I wouldn't say that, perhaps I used a bad example but in general the leaf defenders on average are quite slow. Definitely the slowest it has been in this cores era. Breakaways can be initiated due to bad positional play/decisions making but fast skating can help negate that and turn a clear breakaway into a pressured breakaway where your getting stick checked, lifts etc
Id say last years D was slower. Muzzin's a much worse skater than McCabe and Schenn/Boosh are about on par. Maybe a slight edge to Boosh

It’s not just Matthews going to UFA, Nylander and Marner are soon to follow.
A new plan is really needed going forwards.
What kind of team and playoff team do you want to be and how to adjust a build to achieve this. Cap, balance, D, goalie, etc.
This is a huge undertaking.
yep we all know what the stakes are, both MM and 88 have NMC's kicking in as well, with Mitch of course at least we get the extra year, but they have to make a decision on Will as well. Both Matthews and Nylander situations are mirrored

I think that with Matthews being the biggest dog in the kennel is 1st up and there's some real urgency with that because of that NTC kicking in on July 1, and so that's where most of the focus should be and if it has to be done the best spot to do that is at the draft and it's really not all that far away.

I want them to win the series. I dont believe they will, but thats what i want. I hope all of us do?
Naw there's people on here who don't want them to win even if some sort of unbelievable miracle happens

I always thought matthews was untoucahble but after this series I don't care who gets traded.

This core will never find playoff success.

Time to move on from them
oh they'll find playoff success they'll likely win cups just not here... it'll just be a long list of stars that got pushed out from Toronto and went and won elsewhere

One could say that a miracle happened that Florida won 6 straight playoff games against the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the Atlantic.

We WANT them to win. What we don’t want is for them to do the second most leaf thing possible, make it somewhat close but when it looks to be on, they fold. I’d rather lose in 4 then gut out 2-3 wins and lose in 6-7 with a classic no-show.

Comeback from 3-0 down and lose game 7. That would absolutely crush me and the rest of this fanbase. I don’t even know how to react if that were to happen. It would just magnify game 1-3 exponentially.

We all expect them to lose, because it’s the most devastating thing that can happen. A conference final run, at this point, is house money. Just making it there would be an accomplishment worth celebrating

It’s wild to think this team could go from 1st round heroics, to getting swept, to massive changes all within a month.

The date to remember is June 29th. Draft day, gotta have a plan by then and if it means trading some of the core then the draft would be the perfect place to set off some major fire works

Don’t feel stupid, you’re not. We all thought that, wanted that and believed that.

We ignored all last behaviour and thought a light bulb came on. Maybe they pull out some miracle comeback, or at least play with some self respect if they lose. Go out hard.
I guess I feel stupid for the most part for kind of being an apologist for these guys over the past 5 years. I wanted to believe they could get it done.

For at least one more game I will hold on hope and cheer one more time. If they end up losing and getting moved, I will wonder what could have been, but will welcome our new troops and get ready to cheer for them

They all need to play more like Acciari or ROR.

We all know it, players can see them but they go out there figure skating once again. (and 15 min late)

Even Mike Johnson finally realises they’re not very good and he has no concept of what it takes to win in the NHL.

It's not hard, your stars have to perform this time of the year to win...is he being naive, or just letting the core 4 off the hook?

"He went from 1-on-1 to 1-on-5 into a hole," Maurice said. "But that was the change of sides, right? That's really impressive, draw people to you, release them and then go to open ice. He does that a lot in the small areas of the game that you almost have to watch on video, right? Just take his line shifts, his puck support and his recognition of the flow of play is just incredibly good."

The entire shift was standing there watching him dunk OT winner. Untouched. Hit on the entry would solve this, even just to slow him down.

Individually some will

Together as a group they will never

They deserve to get pushed out with how they've performed in the playoffs year after year

Can they even get anyone? Draft picks and prospects won't turn it around for a few years.

The fact WN and AM have 1 year left most likely means they don't bring back high impact roster players. You could still get a good return, but for down the road.

We have to hope somehow they turn this series around
There is no doubt we are in big trouble. If they don’t sort it out in this series it’s going to take a long time to fix these issues

Before I moved on from this core I’d change management. Sometimes a coach or GM can only go so far and hit a wall. New people (not sure who) with no bias or attachment might be needed to evaluate properly.
Build a team that is obviously good in the regular season but is built better to handle 4 rounds of playoffs and teams that play different styles. Sacrifice some regular season excitement for more playoff success.

Yes it was crazy how the players reacted like NPCs when Reinhart brought the puck back away from the blueline into the neutral zone.

It's almost like the AI in game system reset those players into their original algorithms.

The Leafiest thing at this point would be either

A) swept by Florida after finally slaying the round one beast.

B) go all the way to the finals and be 5 mins away from sweeping it only to lose in game seven against Edmonton, just so we get to hear about it for the rest of eternity.

You might have a point...perhaps the way Dubas and Keefe prefer this team to play doesn't work for this team...keeping possession at all cost doesn't work when you're doing it at your own blueline and turning the puck over...remember that spin-o-rama that Dermott tried in OT against the Habs in his own zone to keep possession instead of just shooting the puck out? That also resulted in an OT loss.
