Post-Game Talk: Leafs Lose 3-1

If we get swept by Florida in the 1st round, our pain will soon be soothed when they announce the 98 million dollar Marner extension so it's gonna be a good summer no matter what, :)
If we get eliminated in the 1st round again and yet they still retain Marner, Tavares and Shanahan, then at least I'd know there's no reason to pay attention at all until the core is gone and I could try to do other things to take my mind off the fact that life sucks right now.

I am a cynical, rotten bastard but even I don't expect all of those things to happen. If they lose in the 1st round I wouldn't expect them to retain Marner (unless he goes God mode in the playoffs, which he probably won't) or Shanahan.

I can't see Marner wanting to be back and Leafs management desperate enough to pay him and face the fans backlash who are tired of the same song and dance. These are not the Blue Jays. They are not desperate to overpay a loser because they need to sell tickets. Jerseys on the other hand, a different story.
I have little faith that MLSE won’t continue to overpay underperforming players………

The effort was there, but it’s hard for this group to overcome when the opposition is focussed.
Willie ended the game with 0 shots, 0 hits, 0 blocks. If he didn't have a -2 beside his name or being seen in the highlight making the feeble attempt to get to the point on the first goal, you'd wonder if he dressed. Zero effort on display last night.

They had 4 SOG in the 3rd and I heard they were out chanced 11-1 in high danger area chances. Matthews first SOG in the game was on a pass from Mitch after a bad giveaway by Jones. That was a gift from the Gods.

It would be very Leafy to get swept, announce that big changes are coming, and the big change turns out to be a big raise for Marner because as I've read here many times, "you just can't lose talent like that for nothing".:laugh:
Pretty much spot on……

I'd like to see how Tavares performs in the playoffs to determine how much I think he is worth. Today he has earned close to the rumoured $7m ask IMO. Mitch on the other hand can go. Not worth the money unless you are here to sell jerseys.

Unless Matthews, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander show up in some capacity EVERY GAME, this Leafs team isn't going ANYWHERE in the playoffs.

At least Tavares score a goal in last night's game. The rest were NO SHOWS once again. Unacceptable at their salary levels. The rest of the forwards were terrible to average as well. Our D gets barely a pass from me.

Rielly worked more for the Panthers than for our Leafs !!!

JMHO.

No way I’d give JT more the 5mil on a short term deal. JT’s not the problem, but he’s also not the solution, he’s made his bank if he wants to stay in his beloved Toronto he needs to take a serious haircut. Imo, of yhe four overpayed forwards he’s by far the mist likeable……..

I agree.

But until proven otherwise, selling jerseys is all this organization is good for.

I wouldn't single out one of the forwards. Our top line, including Matthews, have been good all season.

It's the constant pressure, Florida put on the entire game. Our D could not match the pressure Florida was putting on. The entire team was being strangled it looked like.

Our D couldn't string one good pass the entire night. I don't blame Matthews.

When Florida has such a press, you need your star offensive D-man, to make plays to create space for your forwards. There was 0 space available.
Rielly did not make 1 skating attempt into the neutral/offensive zone, the forwards either had to skate it out from our on zone, or, receive a broken pass from the D Zone.

Just irksome that it looked like Matthews needed to push north in that moment, chip it forward or at least just pin it on the wall and wait for support and he did the worst possible thing bailing on moving the puck north. That instinct is going to burn us under pressure in the playoffs.

Matthews has been crap all year, for that matter. I'm sure it's partially injury related but that's not an excuse.

Florida were better team .. Woll was only guy who showed up .. Rielly gave game away in 3rd .. Matty can't hang in fast playoff games .. Willy had a poor game .. Robertson and Domi and McMann and Knies tried .. oh well maybe best result as Tampa v Florida is best situation for this team for playoffs

The Leafs were out shot and out played and the game was close only because of Woll, hopefully they have a better game tonight against Tampa Bay.

If he’s injured he had no right playing in the 4nations, that just screams shelfishness……

I really want to see this team against Ottawa, partly because if they lose I wanna see Shanny try to explain that one LOL. Will he finally admit that his experiment did not work and it was a mistake investing this much money in the core guys?

Sadly Leaf Nation gets the team they deserve, happy with mediocrity, get mediocrity…….
It actually blows my mind how happy some people are with this bunch. All those consecutive years making the playoffs means to some people that we're the best team in the NHL. And those playoff losses, I mean there seem to be thousands of excuses for those, it sure isn't on the players LOL.

It seems just as likely the Leafs could slip down and get Florida.
