Matthews has been winning puck battles/board battles. Puck goes in the offensive zone if it is not on Matthews' stick it is out of offensive zone in a jiffy.

Also, they are taking away the Matthews shot on PP; so Leafs need to do something different except they have two muffins in marner/rielly on the PP; Rielly doesn't evven have a slapper; if I was Matthews I'd be frustrated with my linemates.

Winning puck battles is kind of the minimum level of contribution though.

Don't know what to say about this one. The defensive breakdowns were brutal... But then no adjustments. Zero.

Engvall should be done as a Leaf. Jarnkrok has been disappointing tbh.

Starting to feel like the same team that quit on Babcock. They aren't playing for Keefe. I don't believe in panicking less than 10 games into the season but I expected some growth from that Tampa series, and certainly some urgency.

Tavares/Willy/Robertson/Sammy were the only players for us tonight. Everyone else needs to get to work and stop sulking, because I can't see Dubas firing his buddy.

They've had 3/7 no show sleepwalk games this year in Vegas, Montreal and Arizona. So the small sample size of the season and ratio of bad hockey is not a positive.
Even the Ottawa game was not a good showing. Samsonov kept them in it while they sleepwalked for most of the game and then woke up at the end.

Once you win the puck and you are covered you pass the puck and get open. Matthews does that and puck goes out of the offensive zone more often than not b/c marner/bunting suck at maintaining possession of the puck in the o-zone. Once both marner/bunting get pressured they cough up the puck faster than a grade 2 kid bullied by a fat kid

Also worth noting that the Leafs have conceded the first goal of the game 5/7 games this season.

No excuses. He's the reigning Hart and Lindsay champ and playing like Mark Scheifele.

7 games in and Matthews has 1 tip goal.... Need more from him. Do you break up the only good line in Robertson - JT - Nylander to try and save the first line? Not sure, but I am worried that Matthews and Marner wont take to kindly to being split up. Might be the final nail in Keefe's coffin.

Matthews is generating a decent amount of shots especially at even strength but can seem to bury anything. Marners looks rougher, definitely a slow start to the season for him

Man one person can only do so much in hockey. Linemates need to show up to and not cough up possession of the puck; keep cycle going until lanes open up.

If Marner was making league minimum I'd agree with you, with Marner making 11 AAV losing puck/board battles and then coughing up the puck to get out of o-zone is unacceptable. Marner has been trying all the fancy BS that he needs to shut down and simplify the game. I don't call out Bunting as much b/c his caphit isn't crazy

how do the leafs manage to start late in each period? one thing to start late for the game, but each period?

reminds me of those three hour univ lectures with the break in between, some of us manage to be late for both segments

As a group it just seems like they often like to see how much they can win by doing the bare minimum. They just don't have a burning desire to kick the crap out of anyone and put in a hard effort. Then they get embarrassed. And then they play hard when they need a redemption. Once they get that big win, they revert to slacker mode. Rinse and repeat, same story since they got Babcock fired in 2019-20.

What's this with Mathews on the point on the PP. How many goals has he scored with his slapshot? That's all he's been doing lately. I believe he's saving himself for those big U.S. $$$$ next year.
