Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 2-1

Might be their worst effort performance of the year so far.

I'm done with Holmberg. Easily our worst forward every single game. Reaves as least can play a role time to time. Only thing Holmberg does successfully is take costly penalties.

Marner pathetic effort tonight.

It was a sloppy ugly game for both teams, unfortunately we are saying that more and more over the last 6 weeks about Leafs games, sloppy, ugly, boring , poorly executed hockey.

If you want to be payed elite top 5 money, you dont get to take nights off. Nylander has been sulking around half assing effort for at least a month but because he has elite skill he can take 20 shifts off and still score 3. We need more aggression and effort from him. Matthews needs to shoot more than once in 22:47. Marner 1 shot in 22:28.

It was batted by the Sens player and it had some steam on such that Pinto was slow to react with the knee. You can believe what you want but I believe it was the correct call.

Fair, I dont like it.

Matthews complained about the atmosphere on a Wednesday night against Columbus and then got pushed out of a Saturday night game at Ottawa.

Those guys do a lot of talking, that old saying, his mouth is writing cheques that his ass can't cash.

Show me dont tell me, why should fans be louder? What have you done to deserve it?

Berube must be disappointed that he coaches a team that couldn’t get up for Saturday night game in Ottawa and when the game was in their reach couldn’t muster enough to give a push in a rivalry game. Matthews and Marner had that game 7 look on their faces.
He was pretty upbeat post game, liked their compete and chances.

Worked for Winfield. Good times.

Not surprised he’d say that. I think he knows what he has in that room

Winfield and his mates backed it up because they had legit stars on that team.
Some might say they had depth but they only got over the hump after Stand Pat Gillick made the Alomar-Carter trade. Shanny refuses or is afraid to make such a bold move. Being the politician that he is, he just gives the fans lip service in early May. Clock is ticking Shanny.

This team has no Kelly Gruber. It was always Gruber.

Why not try Minten, Quillan or Domi

Kampf and Holmberg couldn't strike it lucky in a brothel with a 100 dollar note hanging out of there pocket

We know those two aren't going to score, why not roll the dice on the other guys instead? What's the downside? I don't see any reason not to at least try them
Domi 3 goals in 42 games. Kampf 3 goals in 37. Holmberg 2 in 38. Is Domi really a bigger scoring threat?

Minten has played 18 NHL games and it was Quillan's first.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but it's nor as though he sat Matty in favour of them.

Coach is brain dead

Someone explain why Matthews and marner needed to kill the second line and take mcmann off it…………..we can’t win one line hoccey we’re too weak at the bottom
There's obviously a clause in Matty's new contract that says Willy must not lead the team in goals or points. We should be happy that he only occasionally has to play with the fourth line. :sarcasm:

With Tavares and Knies out we really look like a 1 line team:
  • McMann/Matthews/Marner were generating a good amount of offence. I thought AM had a fairly weak game, but Marner was great, McMann was good, the line overall looked fairly consistently dangerous
  • Nylander was playing well, but his linemates were useless, so the line didn’t generate great chances. Don’t know WTF happened to Domi this year, but I don’t like it, and Holmberg is where offence goes to die
  • The 3rd and 4th lines looked like they had approximately zero chance of scoring
JT and Knies are good players, but it’s not like they’re our #1 and #2 forwards, they’re more like #4 and #5. Kinda sad/disappointing that 3 of 4 lines look totally impotent with these two out. We did have Patches, Dewar and of course Jarnkrok out too, but even still, our forward depth looked weak.

They always score one goal against Anton Forsberg. It's who they are and why I don't even bother watching games against Ottawa. As I said in the GDT, this was the most scheduled loss of the season (until we play Ottawa again).
I went out to the movies with the wife and kids. Flight Risk. Pretty good. Fortunately, the last two minutes of the game were still on when we ordered our beers at Chuck's.

Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes. Leafs have to get those mistakes out of their game.

On the first goal, Rielly stopped playing when he thought the puck went out, he was pointing in the air like a caveman pointing at a comet, Sens got the puck back, had sustained pressure, we took a PIM as a result of that sustained pressure. Kampft's stick broke, he for some god unknow reason went for a stick replacement when the puck was still deep in our zone and the Sens had possession. Multiple mistake's that led to that goal.

Second goal - stretch pass where Benoit loses body position on Amadio, Meyers looses coverage on his guy in the corner and Leafs allow a cross crease pass, 3 Leafs players should/could have blocked the cross crease pass. Mistake, mistake, mistake.

This team over the last month+ has looked a heck of a lot like the failed Leafs playoff teams. Lacking detail in their game. Soft defensive play. Scrambly, panic play with the puck. Not purposeful.

I go back to the question I've been asking since December, where is Berube's system of tight checking, playing as one unit. We know what his system looks like, we played his Blues and that team although they lacked top end skill all played as one unit. Come to think of it he had Billington, who had to stand on his head most nights to give the team a chance. Maybe Berube's system is to hope a goalie gets out of this world hot and ride that to a championship? I'm already on the dump Berube train, he's had 50 games to establish his system and it is non existent, where is coach Q?
Considering how useless most players are without a stick I don't think it's necessarily a bad play when it's the short change and they are holding a stick out for you.

I had to go back and rewatch the other goal - Marner was in position to block the cross crease pass (and partly did), but who were the other two? Woll was the only one who might have and it had been deflected by then.

They should give Murray a run . His ahl stats are solid, he’s won a cup. Maybe he’s got another one in him.

Just don’t trust or believe in the current goaltending (woll) to make a run

Just keeping their powder dry.

Remember all you big brains - regular season doesn't matter, correct?

Not worried but yeah they were crap again tonight. Reilly is getti g pilrd on but I can't think of a single thing to say in his defense. He's been trash all year, but all will be forgiven with a great playoff performance. Problem is that seems more and more unlikely with each passing game.

Oh and second goal should have been called back but that's the problem with playing crap - you're at the mercy of bad calls, missed calls and stupid luck
