This coach is brain dead when it comes to being down a goal in the 3rd. Roles 4 lines as if we’re up a goal or two. The amount of times kampf reaves and holmberg were on the ice late in the 3rd was ridiculous

Holmberg and Kampf had about 6 minutes each in the third, but Reaves had one shift, for 26 second.

Looked like he was bag-skating the first line after that awful first shift where they had to wait for Willy to get the puck down ice. It worked for a moment.

Why is it that when we're trying to clear the zone there is in Ottawa player in the way, but when they are trying to clear the zone we are back at centre?

Willy's fault - he's got to stop passing to guys who are wide open but can't score.

Ottawa has a very simple strategy - hit the Leaf player and take him out, and let the next guy worry about the puck.

One shot each for Mitch and Matty and 7 for McMann?

Fourth line with only 7 shifts - 4 in the first, 2 in the second, and 1 in the third.

Willy 5 for 6 in faceoffs.

More often than not we will score 2 or 3, Woll will make a pile of saves as usual and we will likely be a 1 or 2 seed. We will lay eggs like this as we just have an anemic offense and we will rely on individual brilliance to get goals. We do not play a 5 man game.. we don't have the players and Berube does not coach offense. He's truly old school. Goaltending, big D , occasional brilliance up front.

not that this is a revelation on my part or anything but I really don’t think we should have marner and Matthews together. They are both worse together imo. Never used to be the way, but the last couple years, it feels like it’s true

You ever just think coaches just know how to stop our guys from scoring and how to defend against them? There's a reason why this team has only made it out of the 1st round once and our top offensive guys usually dry up the last 3-4 games of a lot of those 7 game series.

Man we have a lot of useless forwards. Dewar. Reaves. Holmberg. They all should be shipped out.

When they lost 5-1 last game it was pretty unanimous Hildeby was to blame.

So I suppose it's Woll's fault they lost this game. He should have been able to pitch a shutout. Better yet he should have scored a couple goals himself.

Right now he's too one-dimensional.

Holmberg is the worst player on the team. Wouldn't surprise me if he's the worst player in the league. I don't watch enough of the rest of the teams to know if their cruddy players are worse than the Leaf's cruddy players.

We'll just say Holmberg stinks and leave it at that.

At least he wasn't alone in bringing down the Leaf's tonight. This was a group effort. Berube could have made a few adjustments instead of just double shifting the top line so he shares some of the blame as well.

Too bad they didn't have better goaltending to bail them out.

Ottawa's a young up and coming team. We did a good job of hanging with them in their house, moral victory IMO.

Agreed, I’d say my biggest gripe with Marner tonight is he was at the blue line damn near every shift. We can be having that. You gotta drive the net. He started doing it in the 3rd. But no reason for Marner to be up high on the cycle.

I also noticed that in the first 2 periods ( before I fell asleep for the third).
Do you think that’s him doing it on his own or is this some weird setup by the coaching staff?

It’s frustrating because you look at MacKinnon, Crosby, McDavid, Draisaitl, they play with so much intensity, from zone entries to driving the net. Not saying Matthews doesn’t play well but it’s not even a comparison to those guys.

The difference is that those guys have that dawg in them. You either have it or you don't. You can't teach it. There's a reason why Matthews, despite his incredible individual talent and generational goal scoring ability, has won literally nothing in his hockey career, at any level.
