That's far and away my biggest concern. Result, whatever, they could have, should have won.

But man, this team has gotten slower and slower year after year. It's like they're skating in cement watching them on the rush. Scoring in transition is going to be an issue all season.
It’s a big concern. Two yrs ago against TB it became noticeable, but now it could be a huge problem. With Matthews hurting it’s hard to get to scoring areas.

TTOE played horrible and were lucky to win but against the good teams those lost puck races could kill them.

Matthews continues to show his playoff form....13.25 there. Looks like he really doesn't wanna lead this team to a div win this year either. That last second chance choke just continues the trend

Marner wasn't really bad...but this guy doesn't shoot the puck at all. I really really hate that about him. So many times where he still looks for matthews even though he needs to shoot it. He made some nice plays too

Tavares.....he is done, he can't play.... he can have 50 points or 60 points or whatever he just kills too many plays. I wouldn't sign him back no matter. Everything else can be and is an overreaction but this isn't.

Nylander didn't look the same as last year...big shocker he made some nice plays but just didn't look the same. Some of it has to do with tavares, but man he got paid and looks to be dipping

Stolarz was fantastic, OEL was good (WTF was that breakaway), Lorentz was solid, Knies was good, Benoit was great, Tbh defence as a whole was good

we got f***ing shutout by montreal...embarassing

Can’t believe some people think we played well. 47 shots and basically none of them were dangerous.
Montreal packed the high danger areas and we obliged by just tossing harmless stuff from long range. The epitome of empty shot attempts.

Stolarz was sharp which is big. Other than that not much positive to take away. It was like our postseason offensive struggles on steroids against a terrible team.

They had a lot of shots from the outside, but they also had tons from in tight.

They had chances.

There were plenty of dangerous changes. There were some nice shots from outside, no one was in front. So their goalie was able to see the puck and get in front of it. The ones he couldn't see he didn't even move on (1 post).

It was a strange one, because we had guys in front of the net, but tat was when we were shooting from the sides. Kinda made no sense.

True, exactly this. I can't remember a single dangerous shot against Canadiens. The best chance appeared or happened during the last seconds... Says it all really. Not impressed by neither team, especially not by the Leafs.

TTOE is supposed to be a fast team and the Leafs will always be dog fights against teams with speed.
Yeah...last year Toronto seemed to have the most problems in the regular season with the younger/more athletic/faster teams. Columbus, Montreal, Buffalo, Ottawa.....they weren't good but the played the Leafs well. All younger teams with raw talent and some speed.

Same issues from last year come back in the first game of the season. Lack of scoring and bad powerplays.

Toronto dominated on the shotclock, but they looked sloppy as hell trying to make any plays.
Last years playoffs?

Leafs were the 2nd highest goal scoring team last year.

The good.

They controlled play and got unlucky by hitting a few posts. Easily should have been a win.

The bad.

They controlled play and got unlucky by hitting a few posts.

Not unlike the Montreal series

How many of those inside chances were memorable? So many fumbled shots, fans, just really poor execution. Not completely unexpected with the first game but it’s the first game for every team.

I don't think they played lights out, and the 1st was terrible.

They did generate a lot, Montreal's goalie played well.

I thought they were the better team, but not amazing.

Still in pre season mode which is typical usually for the month of October. Adjustments are going to be made which is basically what you do all season to make best what you have.

Too early for the sky to be falling but a few takes.

- Lines need to be balanced for more speed as we’re slower this year
- OEL needs to be on the top PP unit. Let Reilly focus on other stuff to take pressure off him
- Stolarz was great but hope to god Woll can be healthy this season as Stolarz has never played more then 28 games a season. He can’t be expected to carry that big load all season. Best case is a 2 goalie tandem unless proven otherwise.
- OEL had a decent game but needs to be used properly. Can’t fault him too much for the PK(That shouldn’t be his job) breakaway was a f***ed up but again he’s a defenceman so give it a pass
- Domi is Domi. He can have a good game, have good moments but equally has moronic games/moments. It’s just what he is.
- Savard obviously needs a chance more than just 1 game to show what he can do with the PP but it’s obviously in pre season mode of figuring it out. Hopefully by November they have it figured out but that showing tonight was horrendous still.

Again it’s still ridiculous to freak out after the first game which I’m not but the coaching staff clearly has stuff to figure out which is their job first month of season and really all season to.
