I'm a bit concerned Kadri only got 9 minutes playing time. Maybe a sign Carlyle doesn't quite trust him defensively yet.

9 minutes isn't much, but it felt like he was out there a lot more .. Every time he was out there he was doing something to make a good impact

But he also was out there with a minute and a half left, so I think Carlyle did trust him

The Leafs got into penalty trouble in the third, so Kadri wasn't given much ice in the last period which makes sense

Phaneuf looked slow? What the hell are you talking about?

I agree, I thought Phaneuf looked very well in Carlyle's defensive system .. He wasn't being asked to carry the puck out of our zone in a run and gun style a la Wilson .. Rather he was a steady physical player who kept in position and made good decisions, I liked what I saw

He had him out there with less than a minute to go protecting the lead... Carlyle said it was his fault why Kadri got so little minutes and should have played more. Some times because of the way Carlyle coaches with line matching, PP, PK ice time isn't spread as evenly... He didn't roll 3 lines like people say the ice time proves it he's more hands on with line matching.

Carlyle actually mentioned in his PG interview, he'd have liked to give Nazem more time (and definitely will), just couldn't. Put the blame on himself.

Agreed, he was stellar. But I didn't think he was slow at all, I thought his skating looked a lot better actually. Hope he keeps it up.

OT: KOMISAREK PLAYED WELL

Last night was everything that I'd want opening night vs the Habs to be. Leafs won. Kadri scored. Brownie with a good fight. Kostka looks like he could honestly be a diamond in the rough find. ****ing excited for this season boys!

you can tell Carlyles team isnt gonna be the high flying offensive team that Wilsons was. If they buy into this system, minimize opponents scoring chances and capitalize on their PP like they did tonight- this team has a good chance in making the playoffs.

What I've been saying all along.

The habs offense is terrible, however if the leafs defense can play like that all season both goalies will put up impressive numbers.

I don't know why people are blaming Phaneuf for the goal it was Kuli who shadowed Gionta to the top of the circle then turned his back on him and let him come back down the slot unchecked , you give guys open ice on the backdoor side and they will put it in the open hole when they get the puck in this league .

I'll be content with average numbers after what we've had in the years since the previous lockout.

Kuli blew the entire play. He should have got the puck out rather than screwing around trying to carry it and getting the puck taken from him. If that happens Phaneuf wouldn't be in the discussion.

Kulemin, Grabo, and MacArthur were just never in the right place for each other. Grabovski was, as always, a skating machine every second of every shift but the line played so poorly together I only recall one real scoring chance they had.

Phaneuf is starting with the same bad habits again, half a second behind mentally at crucial moments, doing too much coasting. All the other defensemen had good games, but Montreal was so bad that it doesnt mean much. I wonder if Kostka is really as good as he looked last night. Because if he is, he should have been in the NHL years ago.

If this many people have that many bad things to say about last night's victory, their first loss should be quite interesting.

Thread seems pretty positive to me. While I realize criticizing Kulemin for anything is seemingly off limits sometimes here I did it to emphasize that Phaneuf was being unfairly made the goat on the Habs goal not to be negative about last night's win..

Great:

Kadri
Komi
Kostka
Liles
Phaneuf
Komarov
Kessel

Good:

Bozak
Kulemin
McClement
Gunnarson
Franson
Scrivens

Average:

JVR
Lupul
Grabovski
MacArthur
Brown
Orr

This says it all!

Kulemin may need a wake up call.

He has been absent for a long time. Hopefully Frattin wakes up so we can put him in and sit those who need it.

I can see the lines ending up like this sooner rather than later:

Lupul - Kadri - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - MacA
Komarov - Bozak - Kulemin

It's not so much as demoting Bozie as much as promoting Kadri.

If Kadri keeps playing well, he deserves a shot to center the top guys.

And it also determines how good Bozie is doing, i would agree about Kadri playing with Kess and Lupes only if Bozie isn't doing very good
