I know I'm just a beer leaguer criticizing pros but I never under stood why goalies automatically drop into the RVH even when the shooter is around the faceoff dot. Imo it should only be used when the puck is down at the goal line. If a goalie drops down in the RVH when the shooter is out past the goal line, they usually leave short side corner exposed as well as much of the far side. Every night you see goalies getting beat on these shots when they could just stay standing and wait for the shot. Rask ( my favourite goalie) is one of the worst for this. When I teach kids I always tell them to not use RVH till the puck is down by the goal line and I show them why.
Imo the hybrid approach is the most effective, plus if these young goalies would learn to stay up more often instead of automatically dropping into butterfly or RVH, it will save their hips/groin/knees in the long run.
