I hope Seattle takes 1 of our forwards but young cheap AAV defenders with potential to play in top 4 don't get passed up .. Dermy will be gone .. neither Kerfoot or McCann move da needle much except Kerfoot in Habs series which was an aberration

A lot of teams have quality defensemen to offer for cheap, but not many have much better than Kerfoot to offer unless they have ridiculously expensive contracts attached.

The Leafs are a team where it makes sense to pick a forward.

Intergenerational comparisons like that don't really work so well.

The 1977-78 Leafs were a pretty good team in an 18-team league that eventually lost to the dynastic Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs. If you want to make a comparison, why not compare them to the other teams in the NHL in the same season?

For example, the 1978 Habs roster included:

Guy Lafleur
Jacques Lemaire
Steve Shutt
Rejean Houle
Yvan Cournyer
Pierre Mondou
Pierre Larouche
Doug Risebrough
Yvon Lambert
Doug Jarvis
Bob Gainey
Mario Tremblay

Larry Robinson
Guy Lapointe
Serge Savard
Brian Engblom
Bill Nyrop

Ken Dryden
Bunny Laroque

Would anyone care to apply the 2021 expansion-draft rules to that roster, and compare that to the current Habs team?

I don't think the 1978-2021 comparisons are very instructive for much of anything. It was a different era in much smaller league with a lot less parity.

A GM would have some tough protection decisions to make there, that's for sure!

I expect that McCann makes it through the draft. I don’t get why you wouldn’t let Hakstol pick his guy off the Leafs. Wouldn’t make much sense to have him take a guy he has no relationship with when you can get a similar player but you know him.

I would be shocked if they take McCann over Kerfoot.

Ron Francis was born in Sault Ste. Marie and played junior there. So did McCann. You watch.

Not only is it easy to argue against - it has to be argued against because it's such a painful logic fail.

The Leafs can only lose 1 forward, not 3.

The Leafs think Holl is more valuable than any 1 of McCann, Kerfoot, or Engvall.

That's it.

That wasn't the point.

The point is that our unprotected list reflects on our lack of depth.

Our unprotected list is arguably as attractive a group of players to Seattle as any unprotected list in the league.

I don't agree because here we are talking about losing Kerfoot or McCann.

People on this board are lining up to tell me that McCann trade is great because:

If we lose Kerfoot we have McCann.
If we lose McCann at least we have Kerfoot.

That is the result if Seattle takes one of those players, if they take someone else, we have both. Like all teams we will lose a player.

They've certainly exposed better players then they did for Vegas. Guess that's a positive for the organization.

Yes our good depth makes losing any of the possible good players we've exposed not too painful.

They've also protected better players than they protected from Vegas. Doubly impressive.
That's because our rookies weren't eligible at that time.

Matthews/Nylander/Marner/Kapanen/AJ/Hyman were exempt so we were fortunate. Depth wise the team was better at forward in 2017 then now. Defensively we are better now

I’ll be happy for whoever we lose, they all suck but they’ll get to leave this trash team.

Kerfoot sucks but was decent in the playoffs, gets paid too much and we obviously can’t have that. Who cares if we lose him.

Dermott also sucks and helped sink us against Montreal, good riddance.

We got McCann for free in what appears to be a favour from Pittsburgh, who cares if we lose him.

This completely ignores that we had Jared McCann on the roster and could’ve easily protected him to keep him on our team.
They valued Holl higher, and weren't ready to pay Seattle a 1st and a 3rd to keep anybody. It's still good asset management.

Don't see the issue here. Especially since it sounds like the Covid restrictions in place in Canada make it a very unappealing destination for a UFA. There will need to be financial incentives to overcome this. Bogo highlighted that fact.

it's been reported there is no side deal with Seattle. This McCann deal is THE side deal. I think Dubas again just over thought this, they should have just done nothing and let Seattle take Kerfoot and then sign a cheaper replacement in UFA
People say sign a cheaper UFA, but if you "read the room" and listen to some comments, it sounds like Canada is rather unappealing and may have trouble attracting UFA's until there is a level Covid playing field.
