Burke will remain with Toronto as a senior advisor

He was great in FLA too. Crappy team in front of him though.

I dont know how they get him without weakening themselves somehow. Unless they have prospects I'm missing.

And I'm at a loss as to why they can't decide to take a more realistic approach. That team needs a real plan, and it can't be to try to make the playoffs just to get destroyed early. Build a team the right way, don't keep looking for band-aids.

Here is how they broke down the trade if it were to happen.

12 year contract.

2 seasons played in Vancouver
7 seasons played in Toronto
3 seasons of retirement

Vancouver money

Total money paid = 16,716.000
Total cap hit = 10,666.666
Cap benefit = 6,049.334

Cap hit to Vancouver after he retired would be 2,016.444 and that would be 7 years down the road.

Toronto money if he played 7 years.

Total money paid = 43,666.000
Total cap hit = 37,333.331
Cap benefit - 6,332.669

If he retired with 3 years remaining the cap hit for Toronto would be 2,110.889.

Brian Burke has always been against long term contracts and I could see him hating this one.

No way, something specific triggered this, regardless of what they're saying to the press. They aren't going to come out and say "he didn't make a trade we wanted him to so we fired him".

Might not be Luongo but for this to have happened so suddenly at this point of time, it had to have been a specific cause that flipped the switch.

Just for fun, I decided to rehash a post of mine from the Kessel deal way back from 2009

This is the type of trade that gets one of the General Mangers fired. If Toronto doesn’t make the playoffs this year then this trade is a total win for Boston, and Burke could get shown the door for such a high risk move. If Toronto does well this year, Toronto makes the playoffs and Kessel scores 40+ goals or becomes a 50 goal scorer, it will become easy for Bruins ownership to offer Chia up as a sacrificial lamb to the fans if the Bruins are playing below expectations a few years from now. (The buy outs, Versteeg, Kessel and any other mistakes of Chia).

In the end it was in the best interest of the Bruins and Kessel to move on and we got pretty good value for him. (Knowing how this played out I wish we traded him for Pronger at the deadline)

Well Knowing how the draft worked out I am glad everything worked out the way it did, but the point remains, this was a deal that could have gotten someone fired and it did .

I have a boatload of respect for Brian Burke. He was the best GM for the Boston Bruins even though technically he worked for Toronto.

I listen to a lot of team 1040 radio, and the Canucks are asking too much for Luongo, but Bozak + is what the Leafs want to give.

Luongo is under-rated, he has won a gold and taken his team to the Stanley Cup finals in a mad hockey city. But he has a bad rep of glaring at his d-men after goals and poor starts. Other than Boston and Chicago playoff games he has been very solid. Being a goalie in Vancouver is extremly hard, the only goalie that anyone really idolizes here is Kirk McLean and he never won either.

I think Burke's a good GM, but I never thought he was a good fit for the Leafs. In a city where they love their good ol' Ontario kids it never made much sense to hire a guy who loves US born players as much as he does.
