i wonder if this firing is over roberto louongo? my read is that burke wouldnt deal with vancouver because of his 'ego' history with the team... ownership probably gave him an ultimatum to make the deal since everyone and their cow can see that its the right move to make...

personally i think burke is a pretty darn good gm. vancouver and anaheim werent overnight success but he created/developed the foundation of pretty good teams there. i like the bones hes laid down in toronto too.

and i love his media relations

Think about it: Some people in Boston are nervous with Rask as their #1 because of his short "pedigree". I just can't see Toronto going with Reimer without any kind of backup plan. This team is not good enough to have a young keeper like Reimer as the #1. That said, because of the new CBA, there's a long term ramification with Luongo's contract. For that reason, i wouldn't trade for him.

This is weird. This seems like a punishment for something specific that just happened more than any organizational change in strategy.

He pissed someone off or did something to breach his contract. The timing is just too odd. That's my bet.

They admittedly have done nothing since he got there, but they are better today, and more stacked with prospects than they were before he got there. You could argue with their results any GM could have had them in a similar spot and you'd likely be right, but it still worth noting. He was unremarkable, but it's not like he was a disaster who set them back much. They were headed nowhere anyway.

Under the new CBA, it seems to me that a contract like Luongo's one is very painful to have. I think we would have to ask OOG to clarify the whole situation ( cap implications ).

For all the laughing that we like to do at Luongo's expense, I truly believe that he would get the Leafs into the playoffs. He's not a terrible goalie, he's a #1 goalie on a lot of teams. But he has the ability to be just down right awful. With the right coach you can stop that by knowing when to not play him.

I wonder if attempting to trade for Luongo played a factor. Maybe they just couldn't stomach another 'pin the franchise on this blockbuster' move from Burke.

Many people are speculating him and Nonis could have had a big disagreement on the deal and that was it for Nonis for what he had seen of Burke.

Burke made too many promises he couldn't keep, and too many bad trades.

Luongo took a lot of heat for the SCF failure of the Nuk's but the Sedin were invisible and received very few heat..
