Fans of the team that can watch a game without the Marner hate bias know he had a pretty strong game.
The rest just make stuff up in hopes it hides their limited knowledge.
Marner has been Marner...some really sweet passes mixed in with meh...he looks the same as ever so I don't expect much different from other years during the regular season and playoffs....the bolded....you just cant help yourself can you? weaksauce

Does anyone think that Woll is to blame for the loss because of the 1st period allowing 3 goals on 17 shots where the Leafs totally dominated but were losing?

He lost me when he didn't show up for a game 7 out of the blue because he stretched to make a save and then once again out of the blue is injured for the first game of the season. Unreliable. He can't be trusted.

I wouldn't say Woll's to blame directly but the way the Leafs have handled him feels indicative of the coddling culture that goes on and it annoys me.

Here's a guy who wasn't available to the Leafs for key games to finish last season and to start the season. Okay, injuries being what they are, rotation being what it is, whatever...

But they somehow manage to play him in 2/3 of his games vs the hometown games vs St. Louis in one week, a on out of conference team where he was awful in the 1st one and soft in the 2nd. He didn't even reward you for playing him vs friends and family.

Just annoys me that there's so much accommodation that goes on. If it were up to me, you play him sparingly, make him hungry to get back in the net and battle even harder for time behind Stolarz. Instead you just hand the keys to the guy and he's just mid.

You can try and let Marner drive his own line now please.

Thank you.

it is quite amazing and pathetic at the same time that marner is looking at 12.5 AAV to become the highest paid winger in the league and still needs highest AAV center in the league to play with to produce. Meanwhile, Nylander at 11.5 AAV is not getting enough ice time either not that thats gonna change much; at 11.5 AAV Nylander MUST produce the same or better than Pastrnak if not that contravt is another effing albatross

ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC LEVEL OF TEAM MANAGEMENT AND COACHING

Completely established as injury prone.

Agree with this. The team is honestly run pretty bad after Lou left.

I watched about 5 minutes of the game. Was watching CFL playoffs.

I saw the Nylander one handed drive to the net drawing a penalty.

Watched some passing drills while Leafs were on the PP.

Not much else to speak of.

Don't know if they played well or not, and no real insight from this thread.

Any excuses for Matthews play? 2 shots on net. He's paired with an all-star setup man to score goals and you don't score without shooting.

This was our PP numbers in games vs FLA, BOS, TB last regular season...

...

4 FOR 42

Then we get absolutely shutdown in the playoffs on the PP by Boston and now this stretch to start this regular season.

This is just totally unacceptable when you're spending so much money on top flight offensive players.

That's why they have to either talk Marner into a trade, or just let him walk, add to that Tavares expiring deal and just have to look for new guys with that $22M cap space.

As good as the Core 4 have been over the years individually, team-wise they haven't been able to win with them in the playoffs when it matters.

At some point you have to move on. With Matthews & Nylander signed long term, it's really a no brainer that Marner & Tavares have to go, or Tavares maybe back at a VERY team friendly deal, like $3M max.

We will never move on. Never.

If I hear one more time “the players are adjusting to the system” I’m going to lose my mind. We’re 12 games in, this isn’t rocket science. The players have to wake up, start playing like you give a shit. Matthews is sleep walking out there

There is a definite problem with this core. It needs to be broken up and get some heart and soul players that are hungry for the puck and consistently play real hard.

I had high hopes last night for this team to start pulling away in the Atlantic a bit but nope.

They've been pretty frustrating to watch so far. Very mid with a shit powerplay.

Still tons of time to figure it out (and I think they will) but for example... the 1st period last night... they look amazing... periods 2 and 3 pretty disinterested.

They need to wake the f up.

Exactly, by the time a hockey player has made the NHL, he's played for at least 18-24 head coaches moving up through competitive minor hockey, major junior, and/or college ranks. They have played all of the 'hockey systems' out there IMHO.

Adjusting to a new coach is simply adjusting to the new coach and his specific hockey jargon. 'Hockey systems' often have different names, however the actual tactics and methods are nearly identical.

Sure, each head coach has his preferences for player positioning and responsibilities within their version of the system. A seasoned NHL hockey player, and even NHL rookies, should be able to adjust to a new coach and his system nuances relatively quickly.

As a minor league coach, I coached players one season and then coached them again a couple of seasons later. They didn't forget how I wanted them to play within my systems despite being coached by 2 different coaches in between.

What I experienced was that some players decided they wanted to play my systems their way. Of course it didn't always work out because of this.

I think our Leafs, especially our core, have decided that they want to play their game their way and not what the coaches are asking of them. This happened to Babcock, Keefe, and now Berube.

Pond hockey only works if the opposing team wants to play that way too. Run and gun only works if the opposing team wants to play that game too.

IMHO, our core players are running the show. As long as they continue to do this, the longer we'll see the exact same results despite the coaches behind the bench and the coaches running the practice sessions.

JMHO.

Frustrating watching the PP repeatedly play the perimeter.

It's like they have one player who parks in front of the net and the other 4 stay as far away as possible so as not to crease their jersey. And it's been this way for years.

I'm not a coach at any level, never have been, but it takes all of about 30 seconds watching them operate with the man advantage to see that if they don't physically take the puck to the high danger areas they aren't going to score.

Just watch any team that's effective on the PP and see what they do - Hint: That's what they do.
It is so easy for anyone to see .. we need a PP bomber from point .. we need a Hyman type beast to go net front and provide screens and bang around net on rebounds .. then we need Matty and Willy to force themselves to net on squeeze for loose pucks .. Mitch can run around and pick up loose pucks and provide resets .. i think issue Berube is having is we DON'T have da necessay personnel to play a traditional PP so we play this perimeter PP which relies on da perfect shot which rarely occurs as too many skilled passes are required to move da tender

Where are we playing run and gun pond hockey lmao, I wish we had someone other than Nylander capable of both running and gunning at the same time. It’s a painfully slow team with maybe 3 shooters worth a damn, there’s no counterpunch odd man rush here because only Nylander and Knies are fast enough to do anything with it. The rest play a gud pro cycle and backcheck, they’re just bad at it.

Dominate the first, then stop playing.

Not sure why I was starting to believe that the team would be different this year.

Still trying to pass the puck into the net, no one battling hard.
Yeah, you would think that a tough new coach who doesn't like the fancy stuff would put the fear of God into a bunch professional athletes with multi-million dollar contracts, and make them all more "accountable".

Whatever that means.

I'll bet that Auston Matthews and his buds are shitting their pants that there's a new sheriff in town. Maybe we can see it in their play.

The results must be obvious here.

It wouldn't be the Leafs if they just adapted to change, thrived and went on a heater with everyone hitting personal bests would it?
