it depends on how many leaf fans, vs how many leaf haters voted and tilted the results

Strong cases can be made for all three players being a top five prospect. That poll just shows that the general populous of HF agrees with that. He was acting like that's an absurd thing to think, which it absolutely isn't.

Man, there are some terrible posts in here.

If the Leafs move JVR it should be at the deadline to a contender and it should be with salary retained to increase the haul. Many playoff contenders have limited cap flexibility and adding pieces for them can be difficult, so the retention could come at a significant premium.

A team pushing to win a cup is likely willing to pay a higher price for 1.5 years of JVR than they would be now.

I could see Anaheim being one of the teams that pays a hefty price for JVR with retained salary. Yes, he may not be signed after the following season (you would still have two cup opportunities with him), but the Ducks have an aging core of forwards (I think Getzlaf and Perry would be 33/34 when JVR's contract expires) and have a team good enough right now to go deep in the playoffs for the next two seasons.

They have a slew of good young defensemen that could be dangled, but HL won't be one of them.

If Anaheim doesn't want to pay a steep price, that's fine. I'm confident JVR would have a number of suitors at the deadline.

Given how squeezed most of the serious contenders are right now, I doubt you're going to find anyone willing to pay a huge price for JVR. It's funny because at the TDL, that extra year on the contract is really a no-go for most teams willing to offer up 1st+ for a rental.

Personally, I don't understand why TOR would trade JVR in a TDL deal. Right now, with that extra year and at a fantastic rate, his value is probably higher then anything you'd get for him at the TDL i.e. a late 1st + weak prospect + something small, and you'd probably have to retain salary. Sounds like a bum deal to me when you could probably get a BR type return for him i.e. mid 1st + former 1st round pick prospect + contributing, young roster player.

We've seen it in the past where playoff teams shed salary leading up to the trade deadline to position themselves to pick up an important piece. I'd expect JVR at ~$2.25 million (50% I believe) will be very workable for many teams. I also think that teams considered to be serious contenders will change considerably throughout the year - I mean, I don't think the Sharks were given any real hope to go as far as they did before the season started.

It would seem that the market for JVR on these boards (at least based on what people seem to want to pay for a "rental" right now) would not yield the same type of return as Bobby Ryan did. If the price is already diminished by the fact he only has two years left (I don't see him as a rental, but have repeatedly seen that term associated wtih his contract on here), then I really don't see it slipping more come the trade deadline. As mentioned before, we've seen many overpayments come trade deadline. If Anaheim is a contender and then sees Chicago, St. Louis, etc. stacking up there rosters, knee-jerk reactions often result in overpayments for the players left because of the fear of missing out while your competition got better.

Often the TDL is focused on players with expiring contracts. Reasons for this are two-fold. Sellers are more inclined to offer these players because they'd rather get something than nothing for them and buyers often need to consider who on their team needs new contracts next season. In regards to the second part (buyers being concerned about resigning their own players in the offseason), I would suggest that if you're a team that can't make $2.5M for a top-6 winger work for the following season, you are a team that has terribly managed the cap. As such, I don't see the 1-year extra on JVR being a detriment come deadline time at all.

EDIT: One thing I haven't really considered is the expansion draft. I think this could hurt JVR's value considerably as he could quite possibly be a rental if a team has other more important pieces to protect (and if you're a contender you likely do).
