Leafs Core Beyond the 2013-14 - EDIT Retool or Blow it up?

You know that the Marlies are near the top of the AHL in Goals Against? The system has to fit the players. Seems like we have much more defensively responsible players coming up, including some solid D. As they come up, the identity will gradually change. GRADUAL CHANGE.

Folks, building a championship team requires time. Talent is one thing, learning how to raise your game is another. we lost today. It wasn't a great game. Deal with it.

We are far from a great team, but this makes 2 years in a row that we are battling for a playoff position. That's a huge improvement from previous years, no?

Aren't we still 2nd in the division?

I missed the game today. Must have been pretty bad.

3 quick sloppy goals in the first 10 mins, possibly as a result of over adjustments made to try and shut down Ovi, but otherwise the leafs were not bad overall. This thread is a huge over reaction IMO, this team is years from retooling lol. Our defense and forward chemistry are obviously in need of work but that's not a retool or rebuild, just individual adjustments and development.

Moving some skilled players for more rounded players is something Nonis should consider, this team this year is too easy to play against, and if not for Bernier, our 26th GA record could easily be worse.

yup. exactly.

I know Lupul is a fan favorite but moving him and his salary then allocating it towards improving the D or even adding a better 2 way forward makes sense. We have more then enough offense that losing him wont be that bad especially if we can improve the team in other areas.

If anything this team has proven we're 3-4 replacements away from joining the top teams in the eastern conference. Still a ways from becoming a legit cup contender though.

Well right now our team looks like this...

JVR - 1st line LW
Bozak - 2nd line C
Kessel - 1st line RW
Lupul - 2nd line LW
Kadri - 2nd line C
Clarkson - 3rd line RW
Bolland - 3rd line C
Raymond - 3rd line LW
Kulemin - 3rd line RW
McClemment - 4th line C

Phaneuf - Number 2 D
Gunnarsson - Number 4 D
Rielly - Number 5 D
Gardiner - Number 4 D
Franson - Number 5 D
Ranger - Number 6 D
Gleason - Number 4 D

Bernier - Number 1 G
Reimer - Number 1.5 G :p

I didn't bother with 4th liners and onviously these are my observations. It's clear that we're very lacking on defense as well at Top end C's which CARRY contending teams.

This team is on showcase..playoffs.

Nonnis is at the advantage. Franson,Gardiner maybe even Clarkson(pray). This team is now on showcase, times have changed, we have guys other teams need to win now.

Defense needs to be upgraded. Prospects need to graduate and we need to bring in a top defenseman to help take the load off of Phaneuf. One of Franson (preferably) or Gardiner (would much rather keep) have to go. Guys like Percy, Granberg, whoever need to take the next step.

Hell, maybe even a new coach. This collapse system combined with our piss poor special teams, terrible GA, and overall weak defensive play isn't filling me with confidence going forward with this coaching staff. The talent level on this team has made Carlyle look better than he is I think.

Being a young team is completely irrelevant. It's just one of many excuses.

At the end of the day, it's either you can play or you can't play. Period.

boy u really like mediocre 2-way players; a team full of bollands and bozaks-the columbus model.

Exactly.

This team doesn't give 100% effort. Being a young team should BENEFIT the Leafs not be a crutch to fall on every time we lose games.

Look at the LA game...we know our team can play hockey when they want to but it seems like they bother showing up for about 20 minutes a night win or lose.

How is that not an excuse? Young teams aren't full developed, some guys lack maturity, others take games off, others havent gotten used to the game.

As the players develop they'll get more serious about the game.

LA isn't a good example btw, they're probably the opposite of us, great at defense, but very inconsistent at scoring even though they have so much talent(and they're not young either)

We're about a step ahead of Ottawa right now, fairly young core that's making some mistakes but get's bailed out by great offense or amazing goaltending.

We have some good D in the pipeline but a #2 is sorely needed. Someone like Giordano would be amazing.

Gio is awesome, but prying him out of Calgary is almost impossible, especially with Burke over there. Unless we overpay no way we get him, unfortunately he's not Sutter   Ripping Burkie off is like trying to outsmart a professional poker player at poker. He would fit perfectly though, he's having a great season too.
