TSN: Leafs' Connolly placed on waivers - McKenzie: Cleared waivers.

Don't stop, Nonis! Continue cleaning up Burke's mess and get rid of Komisarek and the rest of the garbage.
 
This just further highlights how Burke overpaid on each and every signing under his tenure. (except for Kule's expiring contract I'd say).

Grabovski may not have been drafted by the Leafs but he has been developed by us. He bleeds Blue and White, and for you to make a judgement like that before ever seeing him play in the playoffs is nonsensical. I don't remember the last time I seen Grabo take off a shift. He makes the players around him better and he's now in his prime. I don't know about you but I'm tired of trading away players that we developed, especially for the reasons that you listed.

Honestly? Phaneuf, Rielly, Gardiner are core pieces. Gunnar as a 5/6. We need another top dman and a better top 4 dman to really survive. A system needs to be put into place however as well. Goaltending is an issue. We won't win with Reimer/Scrivens.

Forwards are a bit more difficult. Look at the forwards from the previous cup champions.

Kopitar/Brown/Richards/Carter/Penner/Wlliams
Krecji/Lucic/Marchand/Bergeron/Peverly/Ryder
Toews/Kane/Sharp/Hossa/Bolland/Versteeg

We do need a system. Maybe a more structured game can see more results. I think if we win a cup, Lupul might be on it. Komorov/McClement as fourth line guys. Kulemin potentially as a third liner. Maybe JVR as well. But even Kessel. I don't see us ever winning a cup with Kessel as our #1 player. He's too shy physically to compete in the playoffs as the #1 guy. I know people will point out his stats in Boston but the truth is, he wasn't the main guy. The same reason he went +30 during that season. Teams didn't focus on him. We can see it when teams focus physically on him. He's not a physical guy. He gets pushed around. Maybe we win the cup with Grabovski as our third line centre, But I don't see it as our number 2. I know people like him here. I'm not. To each his own. I was never a fan of him to be honest.

Look at our team now. We aren't even close to a playoff spot, let alone a Cup. Major pieces have to be added especially in the centre position. We need a forward who's great defensively. Look at the previous cup winners. They have amazing shutdown centres. Bolland/Sharp, Staal, Datsyuk, Bergeron, Richards. Defensive minded centres that are fantastic. Grabovski doesn't really fit that profile.

you have to pay a bit more for a shorter term contract. 4.5 for 2 years wasn't bad. It was a bit more salary but the years was perfect.

Let's revisit this after Nonis brings in his own garbage contracts.

Only good thing Burke did was sign players up for short term. But that doesn't necessarily mean he signed a good player. Or on good $ amount. And I don't see how Connolly contract helped Leafs either. Instead, just kept Kadri out of NHL for a year, as I see it.

At least good thing he did was get rid of Schenn contract before leaving, and buying out Armstrong.
 
I look forward to Tim Connolly joining Jonas Gustavsson as ex-Leafs who will excel elsewhere now. I'd say around 50-60 points from Tim.
 
Nice. Connolly has a lot of skill but didn't really mesh well with Kessel or Lupul - two players which he would be most effective with. Good luck to wherever he goes.

That certainly could happen but if it does nobody should feel bad about it. He had last year and training camp to show that he is worth the salary he is paid and he fell short. I'm glad Nonis had the balls to pull the trigger on Connolly, we couldn't chance another year of injuries and inconsistent performances, especially at such a price.
 
Nonis signed Connolly, not Burke.

Burke was in the Middle East. Nonis was doing the wheelin-and-dealin'. Just to reassure that your facts are straight.

Is this opening up a roster spot for Kadri, or will this only propel McClement into the 3rd line center duties?

I think there is a few teams that can use Connolly and he may get picked up on waivers.

Teams like

Chi
FLA
Nash
NYL
Van
TB
ANA
CAR
DAL

Those teams can all use a 2nd line centre or at least a top 6 forward.

McClement makes Steckel redundant, 13th forward. IMO:

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
Mac-Grabo The Warrior-Kulemin
JVR-Kadri-Frattin/Komarov
Brown-McClement-Frattin/Komarov
-Steckel (rotates with Brown), Orr (against teams like Boston)
 
Man, I am reeling. Three centres gone from the program in 24 hours. Look at all the room for the kids.

Best of luck to Keith, hope Lombardi gets playing time in Pheonix and don't let the door hit ya Tim.
 
This has to mean Kadri time is finally here.
With him being pretty hard on Kadri yesterday then clearly opening up a spot for him today.

Trading Bozak for Lu becomes kind of harder now too.
