I think they should realize that Tavares is holding his line back.
Domi is weak defensively but can skate and might give Nylander some options.
But they won’t embarrass Tavares by dropping him to the third line, imo.
Should replace him with Bert on PP.1 We should at least experiment during the season to see if it works.nope not with this coach.

Tavares is an excellent #2C and a much better player than Domi. He was ass tonight and this is nothing new, JT has stretches like this every year where his play leaves you frustrated. But at the end of the year he will be near ppg and an impact player in the playoffs. Rinse and repeat.

That suicide feather pass to Bertuzzi after getting cycled to death. What a low brain cell decision. He's also regressing into late season Tavares, which is basically can't skate in a 5 on 5 shift, makes those tunnel vision ball hockey shots 20 feet wide, 10 feet high of the net, and can't handle a puck.
Tavare needs to understand that he's not the same player he was like 5 years ago. He's trying too hard to make plays, by holding the puck and not skating, he turns over the puck crazy. Better to use your IQ and make quick plays instead of trying to do everything yourself, Can't wait for his contract to get because thats the year I think we will see the best ice leafs team, which is a shame.

You’re entitled to your opinion.
But he is not close to the player he once was.

Trouble with Tavares is his year end stats line isn't directly related to the (positive) impact he has every time he's out on the ice. It's good that he's a cookie monster, but his numbers also mask significant flaws in his ability to drive that 2C role.

Compare Tavares shift to shift vs Mats Sundin, it's like night and day. But whereas Mats was always impactful but his numbers lagged, Tavares is often not impactful but generates stats.

Keefe/Marner/Tavares need to go guys. That’s the most of it. We don’t need 30 pages of garbage

Keefe ain’t it. Marner needs Matthews to do anything, and Tavares is just slow and old and way overpaid. Let these 3 problems go and the Leafs have like 20 million in cap

I'm embarrassed he would say something like that. Keefe, it's your job to find a game plan, bring those guys down to the mat and beat that higher league out them. What the hell are you even saying? As a leader, competitor, this is an embarrassment.
Self preservation from the coach. That unit is way too good. Nobody could stop them. What do you want me to do? Etc

Sheldon Keefe has proven to be a dummy. He’ll walk these comments back tomorrow and say he prefers his core 4 any day blah blah.

I say this as someone who was not really a Tavares fan before he got here, but I think his reputation as that Crosby-lite franchise center may have been overstated throughout his career. He's still obviously a 1000 GP 1000 Point guy, so we're talking about an elite player for his career. But I think he's always been a touch overrated.

He's a goober who lacks the polish to say things with impact, to have that polished PR presence. He just says off the cuff crap all the time.

Absolute bullshit refereeing AGAIN. Matthews cross check was brutal but that slash on Lily was egregious. Another game with only one PP, how can that be when we have so much possession. Pathetic. If Keefe doesn’t take a fine I have no respect for the guy. You gotta show you have your players backs.

However, brutal game by Marner and Tavares. Nylander mediocre. This is my worry about our top 4. They have to elevate against the good teams.

No, no he isn't

Mack drives play and controls thr game on an entirely different level, Matthews looked like he was skating in quicksand tonight head to head against Nate, it was pathetic.
Matthews is a great goal scorer but doesn’t have half the heart of MacKinnon. One guy’s won a cup and the other guy one playoff series in seven years.

Honest question:

If we had a Tortorella behind the bench, do the refs pull the bullshit they pulled tonight?

I don't know. The refs obviously thought they were the main attraction tonight and had the right to tip the scales and when Keefe objected they put away the whistles to punish the Leafs on a handful of blatant non calls. I'm not sure what ego nonsense or agenda drives Kelly Sutherland and Kendrick Nicholson to insert themselves into an NHL game, manage the outcome and carry out personal BS on a coach. Maybe someone more hostile or respectable keeps them in check.

It’s so easy.. you just don’t re-sign Tavares, you trade Marner. Your cap is way more flexible with the most important pieces still in the fold

When you see the impact of a Cale Makar at $9 million on the ice, and then you see Mitch Marner struggle to even physically be on the ice, no separation speed, no in traffic strength, no awareness to play a tight game, it's so easy to justify letting him walk at the end of his contract. He's so unpopular. I just wonder how much his future as a Leaf is tied to getting Matthews to sign the next deal. Like if they're essentially Thornton Marleau for life.

The entirety of this organization needs to shit on the refs for the rest of the year. And I'm not talking about once every couple of games. I mean EVERY SINGLE QUESTION that is asked from now until the end of the season. Disregard the question entirely and instead respond with refs were shit like usual. *reporter* you guys won 7-0 tonight Samsonov with the shutout how has his game turned around. Well you know the refs were clueless again missing and making up calls all night, I guess that's how it goes.

Some hard rim arounds at ear height might get the refs to wake up a bit.
