Nothing disclosed because too awful to ponder?

This kinda matters.

Was the trade protection written on a napkin at the Zanzibar and won’t be disclosed ?

He wasn't PP1 until last year as far as I am aware. He will undoubtingly be quarterbacking our PP1 from the get go, so I imagine the low end comp for him should be the absolute floor IMO.

If he is a 50Pt defenseman, the contract is more than tolerable.

I also think when you have that threat up top, it naturally draws PK'ers higher than they should be, which opens up a cross seem pass that has been effectively removed from our PP since Matthews first season.

Whether Darren touches the puck on the PP or not, his presence will open things up.

Not to mention, this guy isn't some one dimensional offensive defenseman that is a liability in his own end. He can hold his own defensively.

Really not seeing much of a downside with this acquisition tbh

This is a team that has spent like 20+ million in useless players and we just acquired a defenseman who scored 70 points and 22 goals, with atleast decent defensive play and we’re looking for a negative here?

With the rising cap coming does anyone think a free agent defenseman of that caliber is going for cheaper than that?

Nobody is talking about trading the contract.

The poster I responded to said the Leafs could just "bury the contract" and I asked how they would do that.

I don't know why this is a controversial question.
Yeah, there is no "burying" it. That's obviously just a term that people use to reference removing the contract in one manner or another.

I don’t mind this move but what is the overall game plan here for Torontos defense?

Is it to now trade Rielly? If so does Raddyish becomes your #1 D (doesn’t make sense)?

Whether you like the deal or not, I like this proactive approach. The Leafs get another puck moving d-man before he hits the open market.

yup.

Is 22G and 70pts a realistic outcome year over year for him going forward? probably not. But we absolutely cannot say it's not within his range of outcomes. He is goin to get every opportunity to replicate that form, and as you mentioned, with a rising cap, this is an absolute no brainer slam dunk signing.

That first clap bomb goal on the PP from the top of the umbrella is going to hit like crack. I watch his highlight tape and I just see Bryan McCabe which just tickles the inner child in me.

You also don't trade Carlo and Laughton for what he did. He's a moron
That was Shanhan and his last gasp attempt at keeping his job. Just like not trading Marner before his NMC kicked in was on Shanny. Not a Treliving fan in the least but he wasn’t calling the shots on those deals.

Shanahan was a complete disaster.

He should have been fired for screwing up the Big 3 deals.

What a mistake it was to hire and keep him on the payroll.

So sad.

Yeah you’re right he is similar to McCabe, and he also did that in 73 games.

In a full season I could see him getting 15-20 goals and close to 70 points if things click on this team.

Either way I don’t care, he’s better than the defensemen on this team by a fair margin.

I wonder if this means we're going to be in on Tuch as well, it feels like we will be, especially if we don't want to trade Knies...

Knies - Matthews - Tuch
McKenna - 2C - Nylander
Cowan - Tavares - 3RW

McCabe - Raddysh

OEL - Tanev

Andrae - Carlo/Stecher/_____

Has to be more coming, I'm underwhelmed. Get Tanev into that bottom pairing role and get another top 4 defender

Good player but no clue how to build a hockey team. Too political and poor judge of player value.

writing was on the wall with this one and will be interesting to see how he does but hope there isn't a NMC cause i'm still not buying what they are selling. To many years at this point. piling onto a faulty foundation imo

In order to be a middle of the pack team, leafs need all (if not most) of this to happen:
  • Raddysh to be the player he was last year (not the one he's been the rest of his career)
  • Tanev to be healthy and return to form
  • Matthews to be health and return to form
  • JT to maintain production
  • Rely on a rookie to produce at a top 6 rate if not better
  • One of three goalies who have never been able to be starters to be a starter
Optimistic take, not having your next 2 first makes it ok to be a treadmill team for a bit longer and maybe Matthews improves his value and trade him at deadline of 2027 / 28 season.

If all those things happen we’re challenging for the division, not “middle of the pack”
