It's more about the length of the deal. Pay him 8.5 for three years? Fine, whatever. If it looks ugly year one, it's still not a crisis.

The guy has had one great season, and that came while getting PP time with the second best offensive talent in the game in Kucherov. How's he going to look in Toronto? How's it going to look in four years? That's my concern.

Oh get over it for f**k sakes. The cap is going up and the last years of the contract can be buried. Nobody cares about years 5-8 of this deal, well except for the likes of you.

You're the type of fan who, if the Leafs were to win the Cup in a seven game series wouldn't be out celebrating with the rest of us, but would be sitting at home calling in to sports talk radio complaining that they hadn't won it in five games. And of course, you would have the perfect plan as to how they should have done it.

First time we’ve had a bomb from the point in forever. McKenna feeding him is going to be amazing.

Not sure who can criticize this deal. We got a legit top PPQB and top RHD for a 5th rounder and cap space - which we have tons of.
At worst he falls off and becomes a 4/5, as long as he doesn’t lose his clapper this deal is money.

Now we either sign Ryan Shea or package Rielly + to get someone to play beside Raddysh because I don't want to see McCabe or OEL there.

Opening offer is pretty important context. That may be far, far below where they were actually willing to go with him.

I don't think Tampa makes this trade unless Raddysh has communicated to them that his preference is Toronto. They're not helping out a divisional rival trying to get back into the playoffs for a 5th round pick unless they think it's a foregone conclusion and they just want something rather than nothing. I doubt their negotiations went very far.
It's amazing to me that anyone could think it is anything but exactly this. People are nuts if they don't think Tampa desperately wanted to keep him, but I am sure he made it clear that he only wanted to play for one team.

We got better today. The rest is a problem for another year.

What’s most reassuring is that Chundin seems to have their head on straight. They can clearly identify what this team needs, and they aren’t paralyzed like Treliving when it comes time to actually go get it.

I'm a Raddysh fan but this a very stupid way to look at it, no competent organization on earth "doesn't care" about the second HALF of a 68m contract and says to themselves "we'll just bury it". That's not how smart teams do business, horrible take.

I hope he performs for every single year of that contract but the concerns about term are perfectly valid.

I've mentioned it, but for me "Elite Puck Moving: He possesses incredibly high zone exit and retrieval success rates, reliably moving the puck out of his own zone with possession. "

This is just as important for offense, and much more important for defense.

Leafs failure to get the puck out was extremely irritating to watch.

He kinda lugs the puck out like an old school workhorse. He’s got that big frame and momentum skating and that seems to buy him clear lane ways for zone exits. And the width of him seems to absorb pressure while he’s lugging it out. Am I wrong thinking he’s a little like Pavel Kubina?

Here’s the problem with all these hypothetical trades for OEL, Carlo … They looked at trading them last year at the TDL and the offers weren’t there. Nobody is taking a 35 year old dman or even Carlo on an expiring contract and giving you a younger, more mobile defenseman. And if they want to win this year, they still need 7-8 competent dmen. Tanev’s health is a question mark. Reilly is as good as gone. So who are the 8 NHL defenseman starting the season on the roster ?
No, Treliving was an idiot. Full stop. He didn't make up his mind on selling until too late. OEL can get a significant return.

I think this misreads the reality of the situation. I think Raddysh wanted to play for one team, and Tampa was no doubt aware of that. I don't think this is something that just happened yesterday. Again, for whatever it's worth, I was told that this was something that Raddysh had wanted for many months, probably going back to early last season. As a result, I don't think Tampa made much effort to convince him to stay. It's no doubt why he was traded so far in advance of July 1. These deals typically only happen a couple of days before July 1, not 10 days in advance. I suspect this happened because it was always going to be the result.

Raddysh to Toronto was reported as a certainty as early as the winter. So yeah he probably is a Toronto boy intent on escaping Florida so he can pay taxes and help build a good hockey team and functional community lol.

Leaf's Powerplay... is this even fair? lol

Nylander - Knies - Matthews
Raddysh - McKenna

I think Tavares is there over Knies... just because of his faceoff ability, and they are both essentially big bodies with good hands in tight.

But to answer your question, no it is not... I'd say Tampa is close, but they lack a big shot from the point... they should try to find a D with a shot.

OEL could have gotten us the Faulk package Detroit coughed up. So a mid first would have been amazing. The butterfly effect is obviously unknown. But Toronto did execute the most perfect tank for McKenna so you kind of let the details slide a bit.

love that he has played with McDavid. hopefully he brings him over.
On one of the socials Raddysh was wishing his buddy Connor a happy birthday and see you soon!!!

Apparently played with each other twice....three times is the charm.

Since when? Many teams who feel they can compete go and get their guy and deal with the rest later. Yes maybe that means paying a little extra but of course this is common and that’s the price you pay to beat everyone else.

Good teams supplement these “overpaid” players with value in other areas which is why it’s important to have good scouting and good prospect pool. Maybe something the Leafs lack in fairness but to say teams don’t do this is not true.

Plus this guy doesn’t have a ton of wear on his body so hopefully he ages well anyway.

To an extent certainly.

Like the Lightning are now looking at a 35 year old Hedman with around 1400 games under his belt and another 3 years at $8mm to go after a season he was out a couple times.
