Not to say that Clifford is anything but there is a trend with JFresh Hockey always putting a negative spin on players when he posts about a Leafs player.

Someone exposed it this summer.

I disagree but I also don't really care one way or another.

Load management for Simmonds and/or replacement role player in case of injury?

Free player that the Leafs liked his last time around and provides a little more size/physicality as depth. Leafs didn't exactly have good LW options if they hit some injuries.

I'm thinking they hope he turns around his game.

Think the Leafs are hoping he can be the next Clune.. Seeing as Clune will likely be transitioning to an off ice role soon.

I like it for Clifford's intangibles alone. One of the most respected teammates in the league and a vocal leader in the same mold as Foligno.

His play has steadily declined but he's still an NHL 4th liner. Most Blues fans are saying his demotion isn't an indictment on the player but a cap clearing move to make room for Perunovich. His play wasn't a problem.

He started out better in STL than he did in TOR. Likely insurance for inevitable injuries to Kase/Simmonds/etc. I've liked having an identity 4th line with Ritchie-Simmonds on the wing and Clifford gives you a spare option for that group.

The mighty might of the MLSE money machine... Who else buries this kind of cash in the minor leagues?

Mirtle said they tried to re-sign him this offseason so they wanted the player anyways. I would think management saw the Habs series tilting due to physical nature of the game, and feels we need players of that build.

Obviously it was the perfect time for this move.

Marlies addition I hope. We already have a guy that can play tough and is useless offensively in Simmonds.

He is currently assigned to the Marlies.

I don't suspect they intend to leave him there for the season though.

Both the season and playoffs are a long grind. They've messed around acquiring big bodies in the AHL that are probably not capable of playing in the NHL. Clifford was selected to fill a niche we could have a problem replacing if we lose Simmonds.

Never a bad thing to have someone with a clearly defined role. I've blocked out the memories of the Habs series but I'm sure there were moments of the Leafs getting man-handled and nobody responding.

He is better than Gabriel and Clune, so he serves a purpose in that regard.

Don't think he serves any NHL purpose though.

I guess this is what the Leafs get for Dakota Joshua
Probably but Clune is well liked in the Marlies and in the organization in General...I can see him being more replacing gabriel potentially.
