Johannesson is a better skater than Wallinder.

He definitely seems like he is more agile. But Wallinder appears more impressive and might be ranked higher in this area since hes about 7 inches taller!

It's hard to rank players in general terms for skating... There would be so many sub-categories... like acceleration, edge work, balance, top speed, endurance to sustain speed, agility, power...

I wonder how these dmen would be ranked based on skating abilities?

Draft Dynasty hasn’t made videos for some of the fast dmen but based on the footage I’ve seen I would probably rank them like this:

1 Drysdale
2 Wallinder
3 Jurmo
4 Sanderson
5 Guhle
All Other Good But Not Great: Poirier/Niemela/Johannesson/Powell/Faber/Grans/Barel

Poirier can't skate backwards to save his life which knocks him down pretty far on that list.

Niemela would be near the top, very good skater.

What are the chances a team reaches for him in the mid first round? 12-16ish. Will he be a draft riser or will he fall into the 2nd?

Yeah, I would have Poirier as a red flag and wouldn’t draft him earlier than a 4-5th round pick. His upside is like a Montour but even worse on defense.... he’s a fast skater but has zero motor too.

Haven’t enough footage in Niemela. He looks above average but can’t say he is near elite.

Agree on Poirier, I wouldn't have him on my list either, but I'm sure some team will gamble on him by the late 2nd round at least.

Niemela reminds me of Kimmo Timonen, really good skater and all-round Dman. He's been playing against men as a 17 year old already and doing very well for himself. Once he bulks up a bit he'll be a very nice addition to an NHL teams blueline. In terms of ranking I've seen him ranked as high as the late 20's but I think he'll get taken in the early 2nd round around pick 35 or so. There's not much footage of him available but @Draft Dynasty is making a video of him next which should add some insights.

This kid is gonna be the biggest surprise of the draft. Total boom or bust guy, could go top 15. Potential is skyhigh,

I disagree. At least based on the latest Draft Dynasty video, Wallinder looks like a relatively safe bet to be an NHL quality defender. He makes good reads and can keep very good gaps with great control of his skating. He has room to put on a lot of muscle and he'll at least be passable in breakouts by carrying the puck himself.

A defenseman can only be so valuable though if he can't contribute with his passing and shooting. He doesn't look like a powerplay QB right now, he's not even close to even being helpful on the second unit. To be a #1D he needs more focus, accuracy, and deception in his passing game, and he frankly needs a whole new shot, which is unlikely to happen.

I'd say he has a bit of #2D upside ( if he learns to use his teammates better), but he's more likely a #4D. Beautiful skater to watch though, I wouldn't be unhappy if my team took him.

Draft Dynasty's my favorite scouting video source and he did mention that Niemela is next, so I am excited to see more footage of him.

I tried watching other subscriptions like Scouching but that guy is too repetitive and I don't want watch him during his analysis, just correlating footage.

Yeah I agree completely. I gave Scouching a go as well, and find his analysis to be pretty good; but his videos just have zero flow which makes it hard to watch. The clips just jump back and forth to him and then a clip of the player, and then him, and then another clip, etc. Often the clips are so short that you don't have time to get a sense of the player, so the video just feels very disjointed. And often the clips aren't even relevant to what he's talking about. By contrast I could (and do lol) watch Draft Dynasty all day long, just a perfect setup that flows well, and Yanic has great energy and passion too.

Yanic's player profiles definitely have easier to follow video, I'll give you that. But I think we can all learn a lot from both Scouching and Draft Dynasty. Scouch gives us some great information.

Since I've gotten into those two I find it really disappointing to go and read Pronman or Wheeler at the Athletic. They just have little to say about most prospects. Ten or twenty second answers are so lame.

Most of the stuff those guys do are lists and such, which wont have lots of writing. Wheeler does articles on individuals though and they are very in depth, Dylan Holloways is one I read recently that was very good.

Those are better, and I appreciate them, but it's still about 1/4 of the detail per player you get from Scouching or Draft Dynasty. Pronman and Wheeler might be the more respected veteran scouts (I'm not sure) but the youtube scouts are more thorough.

Fair enough, the youtube guys also get more money the longer the video is, so that helps

One aspect that I like is that he highlights the player. I wish Draft Dynasty did that too sometimes.... anyhow going off topic of Wallinder haha, sorry.

This is the kind of player who gets picked as a team’s second 1st rounder. The boom or bust assessments are right on. I think he ends up with the Devils, Rangers, Senators, or Ducks.

I agree. Big defenseman that can skate are always enamored by scouts.

Previously teams were trying to find the next Chara which led to the likes of Boris Valabik being drafted 10th overall.

And with Victor Hedman winning the Conn Smythe and Wallinder skating so much like Hedman, I think there will be a team that is going to draft Wallinder in the top half of 1st round hoping he will become the next Hedman.
