those advanced stats are completely irrelevant and he's competing with a bunch of defenders on one way contracts. he's got no advantage or leverage whatsoever.

The Devils very much want him to make the team. That is leverage. I don’t believe they are that worried about Carrick or Mueller in handicapping Smith’s chances.

Do they have room to carry him as an extra D? Pre-season is generally more chaotic than regular-season hockey is anyway, maybe he'll look better then.

They could carry 8D. It would mean they would have to waive someone like Hayden or Rooney, but I am not sure they care? They might but I don’t think they should. Two replacement level players at best.

It’s hard to say what they do. Coaching has said they need to see more out of him, but they are also seemingly working closely with him to try and get him there.

I believe their preference is he makes the team. I think they believe like many that there really isn’t much for him to gain in juniors at this point, and the team really could use quality D depth as their just isn’t much quality on that side of the ice with the two other extra and down in the AHL.

Idk. He isn’t playing Friday so he doesn’t really have any more chances to impress in preseason games, but as others have said. His competition hasn’t been very good either.

Ultimately I think this is simply nerves and some adjustment issues and he could likely figure it out, but who knows how long the team is willing to give him to do that.

really really hope that he is on the team. Don't think he will benefit much from going back to Spokane

He should at LEAST get the 9 game look.

I mean, it could just be he isn't used to speed/tempo of the NHL, and it will take him 15 games to get there.

Yeah, I suspect you're right. From my point of view, I think it's more of a timing and urgency thing. I'm not sure how he'd be able to work on that in the WHL where players are sloppier and more individualistic with the puck.

If you watch his body and stick positioning and his movement with and without the puck, it's not "wrong." On a daily basis, he'd benefit from being around a player like Andy Greene who is somewhat similar in size and skating ability but is fantastic from a habits point of view.

He definitely won’t benefit at all from going back... but unless he shows something we haven’t seen yet this pre season him playing doesn’t seem like a great option either imo

They just want to make sure his rookie of the year campaign isn't against Hughes so we can have repeat winners, of course.

Shame. Good news for Team Canada, though! Look on the bright side, another year to focus on getting as strong and fast as possible can’t hurt.
It’s a wasted year. He’s got nothing left to prove in the WHL. This is a stupid decision by the Devils keeping 4 inferior players on the roster over him, two of them being Dmen that did not perform better than him in preseason.

Just because this guy repeatedly states this, does not make any of it true.

Agreed, to suggest a player has nothing left to learn or prove, and it is a wasted year is crazy. Smith could definitely work on his skating and get more explosive, stronger as well. He’s a great talent and will be fine but one more year as a top guy, running a PP and playing 25 plus minutes is far from a wasted year. I don’t know when it became the norm to think the CHL was some far inferior product. Also, when do you see guys hurt by spending an extra year in juniors?

Perhaps Smith is overrated? He was seen as far superior to Sandin, Lundqvist, and Miller prior to the draft and a steal, and looks like all three may have passed him at this point after a terrible camp. Especially considering dmen chosen after him are already playing in the NHL.

They are 19 deciding who is better at this point is ridiculous its not linear development. Sandin is clearly a more mature player doesnt mean he will be better at his peak he has been playing against men for a while.

I personally dont love Smiths decision making but that doesnt mean it wont improve as he continues to develop.

based on what, exactly? Would love to know.

Sandin had an excellent preseason and will play in the NHL tonight. Lundqvist, against men is excelling. So is Miller against tougher competition. Smith, when faced with his hardest test (and very rarely has he faced any challenge thus far), failed quite miserably.

this is all subjective, but sure whatever helps your narrative I guess. How about they are all good prospects and players develop at different speeds?

not to mention, Smith had an excellent preseason last year and probably should have been on the team at that point.

I don't have a narrative. All I know is that I was told how much of a steal Smith was and how much better he was than his comps, and either they got a whole lot better and he didn't, or the gap wasn't as big (or more likely there wasn't one) as was made out to be. He's still a top 4 D prospect, but I think from what we've seen he's not marginally better than any of his peers selected in that range.

Last year Smith almost made the team out of camp after an excellent preseason, so does that mean last year Smith>Dobson?

Right, right.

Wonder if you coming in here has anything to do with that poll between Smith Dobson Sandin (there was one more, but i forget) where Sandin got absolutely buried and leafs fans cried about it... definitely didn't see you in that thread at all!

Dylan Strome.

It’s a rare situation because you need a talent that is good enough to be on the bubble as an older 19 year old that also has the late birthday to not make the AHL cut off.

The fact is the things he needs to work on would best be learned in a tougher men’s league. Running roughshod on the WHL again isn’t going to help him much with his decision making.

Unfortunately there isn’t any recourse here. The age cutoff screws him
