Biggest riser from the U18's.

Liked him better than every other Canadian dman in this tourney. Agrees with Javo16, in this tournament he definitely outshone the likes of fleury and mckeown.

How Mckeown wins player of the game today is beyond me.

McKeown I agree on. He shined greater than McKeown.

I don't know about Fleury though I thought he was easily the best defender on the ice. Atleast today.

canada's player of the game should have been barzal, despite his brainfart in overtime. he was canada's most dangerous player, in my opinion.

I don't know I thought Fleury was Canada's best. He controlled the play whenever he was on the ice.

some poor defending plays by Sanheim though

Ya in overtime he made some bad plays, aside from that I thought he was very good and reliable.

I don't see him as someone who will be a big minutes guy at the next level like Fleury & Ekblad, but rather bring a really good two-way game with offensive skill in a #3, #4 or #5 role, kinda reminds me of Alex Goligoski.

Fleury was on the ice for the winner and he wasn't even in his own end.

really? once the game was 3-3, he seemed confused several different times and the czechs had multiple chances to score when he was on the ice. basically, i thought he was awful when the intensity ramped up and the game was on the line. i'm sure he will be a fine prospect but i didn't see what you saw on this particular day.

My post was made before OT...where, I will admit, he struggled.

Where is this guy looking to go in the draft? Don't know anything about him if someone could tell me how he play would be awesome. His size and being a LHD is extremely interesting to me as a Preds fan, and how its our best position we develop at.

Seemed really steady d-man yesterday.Gave some hard times to Nylander, late hits and little blows after the whistle.Haven't heard a lot about this kid is he some about 2-3rd round potential, maybe?

Even then that is about 3-4 shifts max?

He's a smart player coming along rapidly. You just can't nitpick at this point. He wasn't in the same spotlight that gave 2014's space the whole year. I can tell you it wouldn't be pretty if you followed around some of the top prospects with that kind of lens.

Since he's virtually come out of nowhere, he's going to get picked apart down to the second, and that won't lead to accuracy considering his overall sense for the game.

Some team will take him late 1st/early 2nd, effectively snatching him up before someone else can "steal" him.

I was in Finland for the U18 and he impressed me. He had a few bad shifts as far as defensive awareness goes but so did plenty of Dmen in the tourney. We have a scout right in Calgary so he made me aware of Travis going back to the fall.

I met asst coach Gord Murphy while in Finland and we had a good chat about many players in the draft including Sanheim. Team Canada video coach Misha Donskov is someone I know well and we had a chance to chat a few times as well. Misha broke down the tape of each game so it was interesting to get his take on players.

Fleury was solid as well, both coaches were fans of both players. I'll expand more on both players in our NHL Black Book.

Not his fault Barzal tried to dangle infront of his net.

Sure it is, he was ahead of the play leaving a forward back to do his job. He didn't provide an outlet either. Barzal had 2 options, he's a playmaker, so he took the playmaking option as opposed to the icing the puck option, but again, this has nothing to do with Travis Sanheim.

Plus I'm willing to give Barzal a mulligan as he was the best canadian during that game.

What are you talking about he wasn't even on the Ice. Hicketts & another RHD were.

I like Sanheim but you don't need to come up with things to discredit others. I thought Sanheim was great in the game, calm smooth, made some mistakes in overtime, but Fleury was just a cut above all the other defenders with how he controlled the play whenever he was on the ice.

Where was the dman? Making a stupid change? It was Fleury. Done with this discussion. Cheers.

Again, wasn't on the ice. There were already two D on and neither were Fleury. (Hicketts & RHer, probably McKeowen) Hicketts I think is the guy you are referring too. He jumped up too much, shouldn't have left Barzal back. Both made mistakes.

Aside from that, I'm done with it too. Cheers.

We are now seeing Sanheim hit the first round in the majority of mock drafts.

Still think that's a tad much. I wouldn't be shocked to see him go in the 25th overall range, but I think that speaks more to the lack of D depth in this draft as opposed to where the kid would have gone in other years.

To me he's still a very nice pick in the 30-45 range.

You obviously see him far more than I do, but seems like a guy that's just scrapping the surface of his potential, with a pretty steep development trajectory. I don't get the feeling that he lacks hockey IQ, rather that he is pretty raw with areas that he needs major work in. I could see a team liking him even mid first round as a project.

I just think there are more guys that have proven more over the last few years to help justify their spot. That's not a knock against Sanheim, I just like my guys to have a bit more of a background to help justify and solidify them as a legit 1st rounder. His U-18 definitely helped, I guess, which is something I guess I should mention.

I just think there's some risk involved when picking a guy that high just because he had an absolutely massive 2nd half.

And like I said, it's not that I don't like the kid. He's worth a pick in the top 45 for sure....we're only talking about a difference of 20 picks or so.

Looking for more info on Sanheim? THW has 2 features on the not-so-sleepy sleeper:

1. Travis Sanheim – The Next Ones: 2014 NHL Draft Prospect Profile (Ryan Pike)

2. NHL Draft War Room: Travis Sanheim

Excerpt:
"The Late Arrival – First 31 games, 2 assists and a +6. Then they let him play: 36 games, 27 points and a +19.
Offense – Travis started to blossom when they started to use him – great shot on the PP, the skating ability to join the rush, good passing ability – still raw so the best is yet to come.
Defense – NHL size at 6’3, 189 lb., solid one-on-one, good stick.
Draft placement..."

I'll guess 14th ish on the early end and say he doesn't get past the 25th-26th pick range. If I had to bet $ I'd bet it will be closer to 15th than 26th.

The kids upside is huge and he didn't hurt himself at the combine based on the teams I spoke to. I chatted with him casually for 15 minutes while I ate lunch and he impressed me big time.

I wouldn't be shocked at all if he went top 20, especially when you look at the teams picking in that range. Based on my mock I did last week, I could realistically see teams like Washington, Dallas, Philly, Minnesota, Tampa and SJ all considering him as a pick at their spots inside that top 20.

I actually have the Sharks pegged to grab him 20th overall. Could make a nice 1-2 punch down the left side of their defence in a few years along with Mirco Mueller.

I just think on my own personal board, he's more of a guy I would be comfortable with after 25th overall. But hey, my team is Colorado and they could use another good LHD in the system, so if they snagged him at 23rd overall I wouldn't be too upset.

 Regrettable URL shortening :sarcasm:

I was at the game a few weeks ago where he set the Hitmen assists in one game record. It's funny because I wasn't actually blown away by his game, I didn't realize he had all those points until they announced the three stars. I liked his puck movement and shot on the PP, but I found his skating a bit clunky, particularly his backpedal while walking the line on the point. I didn't see a great stretch pass from him, but that was just one game, it's not like the opportunity for one is always there. Big frame and lots of skill to work with.

Personally I'm a little higher on his partner Ben Thomas.

Ben Thomas is 3 years older and had very poor numbers his first year.
