LD Travis Dermott - Erie Otters, OHL (2015, 34th, TOR)

Sure he would. But I don’t think he sits a player to “send a message”. He’ll only sit him if he actually no longer provides value. Babcock has taken many unproductive vets out of the lineups. Even good mentor vets who just couldn’t contribute like Laich and Robidas. Moore is currently sitting for Gauthier who is called up from the Marlies.

For all the pissing and moaning you hear from Leafs fans about Polak, he is currently the best option where he is, and he’s an NHL player. He just doesn’t get sheltered like Borgman and Carrick so he looks worse. He has lots of faults, but you need to keep him as depth.

Roman Polak isn't an NHL player. If you can't see that I got to question your ability to evaluate hockey players. His league worst negative penalty differential is absolutely inexcusable especially considering how few games he's played.

Do you question Mike Babcock, Lou Lamorello, Brendan Shanahan and the rest of the Leafs brass to evaluate hockey players? They signed him and dress him highly, but what do they know.

You know that someone has to have league worst penalty differential, right? He's not even the worst defenseman on his team, let alone the NHL. I question your ability to evaluate hockey players when you try and make an argument for this using only penalty differential.

Why does the player with the worst penalty differential have to be on the Leafs?

Look at his heat maps. Whenever Polak is on the ice the right side bleeds shots. He isn't even a break even corsi player. His role on the PK is vastly overstated, his 5v4 corsi/fenwick suggest he's worse than zaitsev at PK. High danger scoring chances against relative is high.

What more evidence do you need?

More than cherry picked stats for a player that gets much harder zone starts than at least 2 other defensemen on the team.

eh Quenneville seems like a pretty good one. Healthy scratching a veteran with 3 cups and olympic gold because his play wasnt up to snuff? Would Babs ever do that? I don't think so.

Seabrook has been dog**** for years now. It took this long?

Dermott is continuing to impress as his minutes and responsibility has increased with each game. He is showing so much poise, and his decision making, skating and gap control are really really good. It is still early, but given his play it appears this kid is going to be a top 4 D-man. He may even be one now, even when Rielly and Zaitsev return.

Proving the slow baking process in the AHL is working for TML.
One more dman to go, hopefully his development is similar to TD's.
He's been quite impressive in his stint in the show.

I've been really high on Dermott since the draft but I didnt think he'd step in and look this good right away.

He's going to be such a boost to our blueline and when Zaitsev returns the blueline is going to be alot better then most people think.

I have no hesitation calling him a top 4 D right now despite how unproven he is. Going all the way back to his days in Erie his game was always expected to transfer well to the NHL. Might be biased but I value him higher than Liljegren.

His IQ and skating are going to give him a long, long career in this league. Doesn't hurt that he's a 210lb rock with near perfect gap control. He has the tools to be as good as he wants (top pairing not excluded). 8 games in and he looks better every night.

Yep. He's the kind of two-way, solid dmen that Babs loves. I think his addition to the Leafs will make Gardiner expendable for a trade. Hopefully they can tack on a bunch of good picks to him and return a RHD difference-maker.

New Addition - Rielly
Hainsey/Dermott - Zaitsev
Carrick - Hainsey/Dermott

I wouldn't hate that.

Valuing a guy like Dermott higher than Liljegren isn't a stretch. Timmy has a ceiling as high as just about any D prospect in the league, but, like most offensive skilled guys, his floor is quite low. Dermott on the other hand may not quite have the same maximum potential (although its still high), his high floor is what sets him apart from other prospects. He plays safe, smart, and uses his IQ and vision to make plays. At worst Dermott will be a serviceable 5-6 in the NHL.

I am hoping he develops into a Marc-Édouard Vlasic for us. He plays the same style of hockey. That is exactly what we need.

Have to imagine this thread won't be up for too much longer. He's too good for the AHL right now and shouldn't go back down again if he keeps this level of play up.

He has only played 8 NHL games and sure he has looked good but he is still definately a prospect and IMO there is still a good chance he gets more AHL time this season, especially if Leafs make a trade or 2 to acquire help on the back end. This thread will be up for a while still and next season.

I am completely comfortable calling him a top-4 NHL defenseman at this point. No way he should be sent down, only Rielly is firmly superior to him on our blue line.

What player would be a realistic projection of Dermott ?

Stylistically, Stralman. Hard to guess how good relative to Stralman he becomes given Stralman's strange development curve (sheltered flashy offensive defenseman -> safe top pairing shutdown D)
