LD Travis Dermott - Erie Otters, OHL (2015, 34th, TOR)

Oh no, don't tell me you're a guy that believe is this silly rating system. Fact is, you need all your defensemen need to be NHL good. Even the so called third pairing play 15 minutes a game. Now I agree cap management is important. But if Dermot.Borgman and Liljgren are NHL good, along with Zaitsev and Reilly, that's a pretty good base and quite affordable. And seeing so many posts about Doughty coming to the Leafs for 11m, gee Zaitsev at 4.5m is certainly affordable.

Let's look at how that would break down though.

Let's assume we do similar deals with Liljegren and Dermott long term (7-8 years) at a cap hit similar to Rielly.

Rielly(5M)-Doughty(11M)
Dermott(5)-Zaitsev(4.5M)
Borgman(1.25M)-Liljegren(5M)
Ext D (1M)

32.75M = pricey

Unless we pass up Doughty or don't get a chance at him but if he's on the market you sign him.

Your NHL players should be good no doubt about it, but try to slot them correctly and pay them appropriately for what they are.

Ex. Martin at 2.5M on a 4th line is a stupid use of money. Zaitsev at 4.5M playing the minutes he does is good value.

So if Doughty is here we have excess at RD and likely too much money on the 3rd pairing, now if we're in no cap crunch then who cares? I just don't see us getting that lucky.

Don't want to get too ahead of myself on Doughty though but you did bring it up :)

WTFM: If we do want to project to 2019/20, when Doughty is a UFA. Lilegren and Dermot are still on their ELC. Reilly, Doughty, Zaitsev, Borgman 5,11, 4.5, 2.5, Liljegren, 1m, Dermot 1m....gee that's 25m for the top 6. Hardly expensive. The best case scenario for the Leafs, Dermot and Liljgren deserve big money (well RFA money) in 2020/21, the some tinkering has to be done. I was really objecting to the original post about thinking Liljegren is NHL ready. And I will argue all day about the silly ratings about pairing that is prevalent in so many posts.
Oh, IMO, no way Doughty wants to leave LA. And if he did, it's because a team severely overpays him....so what would be the point, if it hinders about good cap management.

Promoted to 2nd pairing on the right hand side with Gardiner tonight. Should get lots of ice-time. Big opportunity for him to cement a place in the line up.

Practicing this morning on Gardiner's right side.

Geez, should be a wild one for the kid. Getting to cover for all of Jake's mistakes. Although, maybe he brings stability to the pairing and Jake becomes good again. Leafs could really use the good Gardiner back.

saw this note today...

Dermott, who picked up an assist in his NHL debut Saturday, would have been with the Leafs the entire season if he was a right shot, reports Luke Fox of Sportsnet.ca.
Analysis: Coach Mike Babcock loves his left-right combos on the blue line, but even he had to admit Dermott is talented enough to be in the NHL permanently. Dermott brings a fluid, effortless skating style and a smart two-way game to the Leafs, and deserves more ice time.

Today will be a real challenge for him not playing on the bottom pair. Should see a nice increase in ice-time.

Last game he never started in the defensive zone, and faced about as easy competition someone can face. Came out very positive in all the metrics and the eye test, as well as getting his first point.

I would like to see him get some PK minutes today, as he is the Marlies most important penalty killer.

It's very uncharacteristic of Babcock to give a rookie top 4 minutes in his second game. Clearly he likes what he has seen so far.

And just an FYI, Gardiner's pairing plays the most ES minutes a night for Toronto. So Dermott should see upwards of 18 mins at ES tonight if Babs likes what he sees.

Let's see if he is ready to play his off-side in the NHL or if he is better off being on the 3rd pairing.

Another good game for Dermott. An internal defensive upgrade.

This guy is going to help Toronto have a strong second half.

ya I was curious what management thought of his games he played. Obviously fans on here felt he was real good but I assume there are parts he needs to work on if they are scratching him for tomorrow cause obviously if he was awesome, they would definitely play him.

Im just curious about the guy. From what I hear he seems to be a real good player but then they decide to scratch him haha.. bizzare!!

I think Babs is rotating Carrick, Borgman, and Dermott. With Dermott having the biggest uphill battle to secure a spot (he's the youngest and Carrick has to clear waivers). Due to this, he's giving Carrick another shot to reclaim his spot next to Gardiner. Now, the simplest thing would be to scratch Polak, and test out younger guys on the PK. But, Babs seems firmly against that, which means Polak is written in Pen as the 3rd pairing RHD.

People here might be getting a bit overexcited, but he shouldn't be the one to get scratched and has played well. If we were going purely off merit of the Columbus game, Rielly would be the one to get scratcher (although, that would be absolutely ridiculous, as one bad game to 10 to 15 very good ones earns you a continual spot).

Hmmm, that’s a pretty strange decision by Babs, he played really well his first 2 games.
Leafs have a bye week after the Sens game tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Marlies play this weekend. It's more about getting Carrick/Borgman reps in before a break despite Dermott playing very well.

Expect to see Carrick subbed in against the Senators and Dermott loaned to the Marlies until January 16th against the Blues when he will be brought back up. Allows Dermott to get AHL games in with Liljegren over the off-week when the Leafs don't play.
