Thanks. Great news, but the Islanders have a lot of depth on the backend. I hope he doesn't get discouraged if he doesn't see any time in the NHL next season.

I think he should endure the AHL for at least a few season before giving up and sign i Europe, he is still young.

Glad he wanted to come over to North America. Def think he'll start in the AHL but wouldn't be surprised if he's in the NHL 2018-19. Think the Islanders got a steal here, pretty sure most teams wanted him to go undrafted and then sign him because he's overage

They couldn't have signed him until 2018-19 (and not formally sign until after the 2017-18 season was done) if that was the case, so I doubt that was a plan for anyone. Would have had to wait another season and if Aho kept playing well would have to fight off other suitors.

Assuming Aho went undrafted he could sign as a UFA anywhere for the 2017/18 season. All that being said about your point of him having the ability to pick and choose where he goes is correct

So he's picked in round 5 when teams had 3 chances to spend a 7th rounder on him. It's not like Aho is better than he was expected to be at this point. Viktor Arvidsson all over again, let's see if Aho pans out as well.

SHL players under contract can't sign with NHL teams after June 15th. The only exception is the summer they are drafted, so this was the only way a team could get Aho for the upcoming season.

11pts in 16gp with 7 goals, not bad at all!

Looks like he had a productive weekend; from my count he had two assists as he's currently sitting at 13 points in 18 games.

I won't pretend as if I'm watching him play, I'm not, but it seems like he's off to an encouraging start - at least on the score sheet. Tied for 2nd on the team for points! Anyone have a scouting report, or what NYI are expecting from him going forward?

This guy's good. Elite puck sense. It's fun watching him because he thinks the game on a high level. How he didn't go in the 1st rd is a mystery? If you were a European scout per-draft, you had to be advocating hard for this guy.

Of course you're gonna say this as an Isles fan. It's not really a mystery why he didn't go in the first round, his draft year was 2014 so he was passed over 3 times before finally being picked at the age of 21. He might've been the oldest player picked in the draft.

Not an Isles fan but definitely a Barzal fan. I have never seen the Winter Soldier comment on Aho before.

I don't think he's an Islanders fan.
My bad, assumed he was based on a quick look through his posts praising Nick Leddy and Matt Barzal. The claim he should've been a 1st round pick also seemed like something only a fan of the team would say. He's a decent prospect but he was passed over time and time again, even after putting up decent numbers in the SHL. Saying a 21 year old 5th round pick should've been a 1st rounder doesn't make any sense, regardless of the numbers he's putting up this season.

When Aho was draft eligible quite a few draft sites had him going in the third round. Lack of size was always the big knock on Aho. He is playing really well in the AHL and had a really good season last year in Sweden. I believe he lead all Swedish defenseman in scoring.

With Johnny Boychuk on IR and week to week, NYI has called up Aho.

There's no telling if he will be inserted immediately into the lineup, as Ryan Pulock was the 7th D last game and has played with Nick Leddy on the top pairing (where Boychuk played) in the past, but I think we'd all like to see him in there over Dennis Seidenberg at this point (who's basically done).

Aho has put up a lot of points in the AHL and was really good in Sweden. Will see if his game will translate in the NHL. He remind me of Ljubo Visnovski from what I've seen.
