Anyone who saw Sandin in his first camp knew he was going to be special. The kid had incredible poise and smarts that stood out even at that early age. He'll continue to develop and will easily be a top 4 defencemen with a great chance at being top 2 when all is said and done.

I'm looking forward to watching him improve at the NHL level this decade.

Before Sandin, here are the past recipients of the Directorate Award since 2005:

- Romanov
- Dahlin
- Chabot
- Werenski
- Gavrikov
- Ristolainen
- Trouba
- Gormley
- Ellis
- Pietrangelo
- Karlsson
- Doughty
- E. Johnson
- Staal
- Phaneuf

In a way, I kind of agree with McCagg.

Sandin is very good at defending in the neutral zone and preventing clean entries. He's also actually quite good at handling hard forechecks unlike McCagg and his scouts believe. Offensively, besides the points which come and go, he's still very underrated and has great decision making.

His issue is more that he gets completely lost if a team can establish possession and start cycling the puck. He just starts chasing wildly and ends up out of position badly. His physicality and ability to handle big guys is good. His issue is simply looking lost during the cycle. He's bad at that and some scouts may look at it and write him off as a bad d-man.

Easy fix for a high-IQ player. Might take a couple seasons but this kid will rise to the top. Just has to work on his skating speed and defensive systems, the rest is at a high level. Really have no worries with this kid, you can tell he has it all other than size but he also isn't afraid of physicality and knows how to leverage his body well.

Think about it, he'd be our 3rd or so most reliable defender in the d-zone if he came up to the Leafs today. Barrie/Ceci/Marincin are more unreliable in the d-zone imo. (Rielly and Dermott could be included)

I think in a few years, Sandin passes Rielly. Rielly is a faster skater, Sandin does everything else better.

Is it impossible that Caufield and Sandin both become good players? smh
Of course it is. Why do Habs fans like the dude I responded to have to come into Leaf prospect threads and compare that prospect to a player who doesn't even have the same kind of game?

You're just asking for it at that point.

I don't ever feel the need to go into a Caufield or Romanov thread and start saying they remind me of Roman Polak or Grabovski.

Sandin is more than smart enough to overcome whatever defensive issues he has (Which are highly overstated, but do exist).

I would highly recommend to people to get an Athletic subscription if at all possible financially and read Pronman and Wheeler's opinion on prospects. Grant McCagg used to be fine with McKeen's, but ever since he started Recruites he's clearly had a really fan like bias against the Leafs. I wouldn't treat him or the scouts he gets info from as insanely legit or the gold standard. It's pretty convenient to ask 4 scouts a question and get 3 that answer with a prospect from the team you cover and the other slander Sandin. He does have legit scouting sources undoubtedly, but he bends the information he gets to his liking.

Because you're not a closet Habs fan..:sarcasm:

The thing to remember about McKagg is that "Former Professional Scout" should read "Trevor Timmins was my drinking buddy and he threw me a bone."

100% pro Hab

It's go time kid! Will have all the ice time he needs to prove himself on that left side with Muzzin/Rielly out for an extended period of time.

Circumstances aside, this is a wonderful opportunity for Sandin. My money is on him making the most of it.

I really liked what I saw from him at the World Juniors, I think he's here to stay in the NHL.

Nice opportunity for him with Rielly out a long time, and Muzzin still out for a bit. Tonight it looks like our D pairings will be:

Dermott - Holl
Marincin - Barrie
Sandin - Ceci

Which is terrifying as a Leafs fan, but Sandin will definitely get a shot. If he plays well enough, I can see him sticking even when Muzzin returns, taking Marincin’s spot. Something like:

Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Barrie
Sandin - Ceci/Lily

I can see Sandin taking Marincin's spot once that happens because at the start of the season when he played 6 games before getting sent back to the AHL, Marincin was the one in the AHL.

Same. Though it will depend on a combination of how well Sandin plays, and whether Keefe wants more offensive or Moore defensive play in that spot. But my money would be on Sandin sticking over Marincin when Muzzin returns (assuming no further injuries!).

Also one difference between now and the previous 6 games he played at the start of the season is that Keefe knows him better from their time with the Marlies, compared to when Mike Babcock was still the Leafs coach.

Walked the line to find the shooting lane and got an assist on a Tavares tip in. 5 minutes in, not a bad start!
