We have never, in our entire history of this franchise had a defender that can skate like this.

His skating is absolutely ridiculous, effortless, you can barely touch the guy.
Look at his edge work, come on!

His skating and lugging the puck remind of anyone else of Nick Leddy? (whose also an insane skater.) He definitely sees the ice and has better offensive insticitns though.

I just read hes 5 '7?!?!?!

Do we have his exact size now?
5’9.75”
As per the HP Black Book, and they got that measurement from the combine.

Not from combine but rather from NHL CS.

The first thing I thought of when Vancouver drafted Hughes was how much you are going to pump him up to no end just like Pettersson. Yep, I was right. You would have been making these same posts if the Canucks drafted Boqvist or Dobson too.

Offensively he’s top notch, will he ever be able to defend other teams top players? We don’t know.

F*** off, Pettersson literally broke records in the regular season as well as the post season. His ‘pumping up’ deserves everything and more.

Didn’t he bow out of the combine measurements?

He had the odd slightly concerning interview/combine dodging leading up to the draft, but these were very minor issues, I still love him as a prospect. One of the most offensively talented draft-year dmen I’ve ever seen, I think Dahlin and Doughty are the only two I’d put above him at the same age, since I really started following prospects. His skating, passing, puck handling and general offensive hockey IQ are simply off the charts.

He’s small, but I think he easily makes up for it in other areas. I think he’ll have a legit shot at making the Nucks next year, and he’s got big time star potential once he starts hitting his prime.

He didn't allow himself to be measured at the combine I thought

I’m on my phone so I can’t quote the post from another thread, sorry about that, but Mark Edwards got NHL central scouting to verify the height. So no he wasn’t measured at the combine but that is his exact height according to NHL CS.

I can see some similarities. They both have the same demeanour. There's no panic in their games, always very clam and confident. I'm hoping he's a good comparison for physical maturation. Leddy was 5'11" 179lbs as a 19 year old rookie and is 6'0" 204lbs today.

Stylistically, I think they're very different players. Leddy at a similar age had a very strong two way game. He played a responsible, pro style, team oriented game based around solid positioning. He's always had very good defensive awareness and is routinely able to take aways all primary passing and shooting lanes from a player. He's very similar to Tanev is this regard - Tanev has that "ice in his veins" demeanour too, but I digress. A lot of his offense was born out of transitioning from defense. Very good outlet passer and picks his spots well in the offensive zone.

Hughes, stylistically, reminds me more of PK Subban when he was coming out of juniors. A rover who's always looking to join the rush and push the pace of play. He's very comfortable engaging one on one and beating first man pressure to gain zone entry or set up teammates. Loves having the puck on his stick, perhaps too much at times, hanging on to it too long. A little bit of a puck hog while being hyper offensive minded.

as mentioned before, there's no current NHL comparable because he's much better and more skilled than Krug, Ghost, Ellis, etc.
He has way more potential than just a #1 D. He has top end potential to be one of the best D in the NHL one day.

Go read through what this neutral scout says about him:

He's not comparable to krug, hes comparable to coffey. And his coach compared him to Orr. Now obviously he won't be as good as those guys, but that gives you some perspective.

No other 5'10 D in recent history even comes close to Hughes skating and skill level at 18.

This pick might turn out better than the Pettersson pick in 5 years.

stop embarrassing yourself. You give the rest of us Canucks fans a bad rep.

Jesus f***ing Christ.

It’s not ridiculous to say Dahlin is a FAR better defenseman at 17/18 than Lidstrom was at the same age, considering Lidstrom wasn’t even drafted until he was 19 and even then in the 3rd round.

Being Swedish has no bearing on how quickly Dahlin will adapt to the NHL. Being the unequivocal #1OA prospect in the draft does.

Your argument has as much logic as my 5 year old trying to explain why he thinks a dinosaur would make a great birthday present. Dahlin is better than Hughes today, yesterday, and for the next 20 years. And I say this as a Canucks fan who was thrilled to take Hughes down at 7.
Well said. I tried to explain this to him earlier in this thread but the guy is obviously stupid to say the least. I might be a swede, but im not registered on these boards to rep swedish prospects or players. In fact, i'd say very few of us do. Im interested in knowing about the Canucks and their prospects. But his reasoning and logic is just absolutely ridiculous and it makes my blood boil tbh.

The guy's got some next level tunnel vision, locking onto a single so called "fact" while dismissing several others. Such logic. It really is no surprise that the guy is from Finland. No one else from any other country would be able to come up with such a stupid argument to dismiss a swedish player. Or in this case, the swedish PEOPLE. You won't find any equivalent to that in the world of hockey. You never see americans or canadians on these boards acting like this towards each others players. Probably because it makes you look like an absolute child.

Yes. Let's compare him to Paul Coffey and Bobby Orr.

Then in 3 or 4 years if it doesn't work out we can just blame Benning and claim that nobody wanted the pick.

If you're talking about Virtanen and Juolevi, the posters on here were very against both picks at the time of the draft. Check out the threads from those years. People were pretty set of Ehlers/Nylander and Tkachuk.

I'm talking about the juvenile mentality of the fanbase and their unwillingness to give credit where it's due but overzealousness to criticise when things go wrong.
