LD Owen Power - Univ. of Michigan, NCAA (2021 Draft)

He skates well, for 6'6. But he is not a good skater at all. The only time his skating looks good is when he takes the puck from behind his own net and get the whole defensive zone to gain speed. He has no lateral agility and his first step is terrible (compared to players that are not 6'6).

Hedman is elite at everything now. He wasn't elite at everything when he was drafted. He had elite skating for his size and was good with elite potential in most areas. Being 6'6 gives you an advantage, if you have hockey skills. If you put on the requisite weight, you are probably going to have a big defensive advantage in puck battles, reach, battling net front. Once you are able to learn how to shoot, you are probably going to shoot the puck harder.

Do I think Power has the exact skillset that Hedman had pre-draft? No, he's probably a worse skater, and probably has slightly worse playmaking skills. I think he's a worse prospect pre-draft. I also think being slightly worse pre-draft than Hedman is still good enough to be consensus top 3 pre-draft in any draft.

He kind of reminds me of Tyler Myers. Huge wingspan, great skater for his size, really good breakout passer but not physical, gets beat wide a lot and can seem clueless without the puck. Myers did win the Calder and could have probably had a much better career arc if he hadn't been drafted by Buffalo right as they began their descent into the abyss.

You're right.

But not everyone would rank Pavel Dorofeyev #9 overall in their 2019 final rankings when he went in the 3rd round of the actual NHL draft.

Or how about Joe Veleno and Joel Farabee ranked 5th and 6th overall ahead of Brady Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes. Or Blake McLaughlin ranked 25th overall and he was actually drafted 79th overall?

These are just a handful of terrible rankings that I found and there were a plethora more of them.

The point is dont throw stones from glass houses and calling others "clueless" if they have a different opinion from your own doesn't make it right, especially when you don't have a perfect track record of prospect analysis.

Fair. I'm surprised to hear that comment about his iq, I think his passing in both the neutral zone and offensive zone is really poised. I'm honestly struggling to think of times I've seen him make a poor decision in possession for the Wolverines this year.

I'd agree that he doesn't have the most nimble puckwork, but I think that has to be balanced against his reach and how well he employs that. Ultimately a guy like Power is just going to move through the neutral zone in a different way than guys like Drysdale or Hughes do by nature of his frame.

Physically I definitely agree he needs to add strength, but that's sort of a given.

I definitely have some reservations about Power's game, particularly out of possession. But I also think he's shown a lot of growth over his year at Michigan. To say he's "vastly overrated" is a bit confusing to me, I feel like he already splits opinion. But I appreciate you offering your justification.

"Elite" is a word I try to avoid, but I'd say his breakout pass is about as good as any prospect I can think of. He rarely makes poor decisions in possession.. He's very good at getting his shot through traffic, whether to generate rebounds, work off the boards, or to score. He uses his size and reach to protect the puck very effectively.

Probably worth pointing out that Power would be killing junior hockey but is playing against older players in college at 18. I hope his detractors are taking that into account.

Those rankings you mention were outliers. The consensus had all of those guys you name much lower.
Owen Power has been a consensus top 3 since last season.

Apples, oranges, etc.

That isn't just the case with Power though.

Big guys who can skate are very often classified as "all tools no toolbox types of players".

Quinton Byfield, Dylan Holloway, Kaiden Guhle, Braden Schneider, and Shakir Mukhmadulin are all examples from the 2020 draft.

While those guys certainly have their faults and aren't necessarily smart players, they received much more criticism regarding their IQ than smaller players in the same draft.

With Michigan unfortunately having there season ended today here's a highlight video of Power. Still a bit raw and needs to learn to use his body efficiently but I see Power as a all situation top pairing defenseman in the NHL. Good skater and passer with high hockey IQ. Not going to bring a ton of flashy offensive but he is a very effective in all three zones. Definitely a top 5 pick and potential number 1 pick.

Right or wrong someone’s rankings should never be compared to where the player was drafted.

And Farabee at 6th looks damn good tbh

In the same draft year I think I go Power. Not as good a skater, equally as good a passer, great shot from the point, and you hope he's able to leverage his size advantage into becoming a defensive beast.

If Power was coming out of his last season in the USHL its him in a landslide. Now its still him I think but it would be closer. Drysdale is a really high end prospect, but 6'6 guys who do everything that Power does come along very rarely
