Curious folks should he play in the NHL next year or play another year in college?

Personally I think it'd be irresponsible to have Power on an NHL roster next year, but I could see an organization forcing it. He might exceed my expectations and adapt, but I think he'd benefit more from a year as the #1D on a likely top 5 team in college hockey.

Power is an impressive prospect, but he still struggles at times with the pace and physicality of the NCAA game (although, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I think he's improving in this regard). I think opposition NHL coaches would exploit this and hammer him on the dump and chase, so he'd have to be pretty sheltered to like a 2nd PP unit and 3rd pairing minutes. I think he'd benefit more from playing a bigger role in the NCAA personally.

Nah to the AHL.

Joe Sakic talked about pulling prospects out the NCAA too fast, probably referring to his idiotic decision in signing Jost.
There is a reason there is a strong correleation between staying two years in university and confidence coming out into the NHL
Makar
Werenski
Hughes
McAvoy

If he leaves he’ll have had 3 coaches in 3 years, which is stupid development. If he isn’t ready for the NHL then leave him. Even worse is back and forth between the AHL and NHL. Then that is 4 coaches in 3 years all telling you different things.

Michigan’s entire development for prospects talks about the biggest jump occurring between freshman and sophomore.

Set a record for scouts tonight.

every NHL team represented at this game.
Even Seattle.

most teams have multiple personnel and a few NHL GM’s in the house.

continuing the record of the most overscouted team in recent memory.

When was the last time 3 top ~8 picks were on the same roster? And especially in a weird year where there arent a lot of games able to watch in person?

Makes a lot of sense that this would be one of the most scouted teams in history

nobody said it wasn’t surprising that they’re getting scouted a bunch.

Thanks everyone. He might be the first player taken since Erik Johnson not to make the NHL right away. It wouldn't hurt him to play another year maybe 2 in college.

How much was the record broken by? This is also the first time 32 teams will be drafting, so it’s not even a fair fight.

25 teams which was last night.
this is from the broadcast.
So I’m not sure if they’re referring to the amount of teams at one game. Or the amount of scouts and NHL personnel total, which tonight apparently is a ton.
And maybe they are just referring to the Big10.

Well you said that they have a record of most "over"scouted team in history. I would argue theyre not overscouted at all and that any team with that many high end prospects would have been scouted similarly

the broadcast literally used that term and it’s true.
It’s not surprising that every NHL team is there. It’s surprising that the sheer size of the groups of every team that is there because of the pandemic.
Overscouted is the perfect description.

If Detroit gets him we're A-OK with that.

What kind of game does Power play? Does he have any comparables?

Something between Erik Johnson in his draft year and Aaron Ekblad. Big, strong defenseman with good range and puck management abilities. A ton of patience with the puck. Good offensively but it doesn't cost his team defensively. Could probably produce even more if he was a faster skater.

Overall I've found his skating to be fine, but his footwork to be slow.

Like most players his size, he's not exactly quick but is fine once he gets enough strides in.

He also doesn't move his feet enough and can appear slow because he mostly glides around anticipating where the play is going next.
A lot of young players are guilty of that, and have to fix it or they won't have much of a career, especially forwards. Alex Tuch was accused of having slow feet in college, and very early on in the NHL. We saw how he turned out...it's a problem that is fixable, and less important with Dmen. I sometimes think it has more to do with how a player processes the game rather than a skating problem.

Nothing wrong with a defenceman who is quiet and calm in his approach. They think and play the game at a different level. Ekblad is a good example of that.

Bigger guys usually take a little longer to catch up with their feet in terms of their first few steps. Not sure that Power needs to worry about that.

I really like the Ekblad comparison if we're giving comparisons. I could see him having a similar impact in the nhl as Ekblad as well. A lot of people were down on Ekblad for a bit but hes slowly rounding into a 50 point number one dman that might get the odd Norris consideration.

I think you are underrating his skating. I would compare him more to players like Parayko/Hedman as his floor/ceiling. I think when approaching how to find Power comparables, you start with looking for 6'6 defensemen who can really skate as opposed to looking for big two way defensemen, which is how I'd delineate the difference between how we are approaching this.

Power has to be the frontrunner for being selected #1 at this point, no?

Yes, he's probably #1. That said, it's close enough that position will matter. The Sens, for instance, could really use a center and Kent Johnson isn't far behind.
