He is an healthy scratch tonight. Weird move as most people said he was one of the best Canes dmen since the beginning of the season... so what's up!? Just a game off to watch the system from an outside view!? Or he did something wrong?

This can be very useful for young players, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were the case. Plus, I don't think playing 82 games in a rookie year would be the best thing for his body.

Yes. He's on a long road trip at the beginning of his first pro season. It's not because Michal Jordan is a better option. Trust me.

According to Michelle McMahon, Joakim Nordstrom skated with the Canes this morning. He has missed the team's last five games with a lower-body injury.

Defenseman Noah Hanifin will be a healthy extra tonight. Head coach Bill Peters said he simply wants to freshen up the 18-year-old defenseman, giving him a chance to read the game from a different angle and learn from that.

Nice. How has he been overall so far? From people who watch him regularly, what would you say is his best quality and what does he need to improve on?

His skating is just.... jaw dropping. Even at this level. Watching him and Ryan Murphy skate is just a pleasure. What he needs to improve upon is knowing where the safe spots are on the ice to bail on a play. He's sent too many passes up the middle of the ice under duress and turned the puck over. He needs to learn to position himself better to be an asset to his defensive partner as well. And a minor quibble, he needs to be carrying the puck into the zone more than he does. He's not taking enough chances because when he does, he's killing it. The points haven't been there, but they're trying to break him in defensively before they load up the offensive responsibilities.

Thanks. His going to be a gem and I want to keep track of his progress, huge fan of Hanifin pre-draft.

He looked really good last night. That was the first time I've really seen him. What a silky smooth skater, moves the puck like a gazelle. I was surprised when I saw his overall points, because he had a couple good chances last night.

It's not his fault his team have no offense.

watched him play the other night *he is a beauty*

He looks great and is consistently looking better as he adjusts to the NHL.

People who don't watch the Canes have to understand that the entire defensive-side of their offensive game revolves around getting the puck to Faulk. Hanifin, or any other Canes D, will not be putting up a lot of points. Hanifin never had a shot of replicating an Ekblad-like Rookie year offensively just based off the system he plays in. Overall he looks just as good or better than advertised. Definitely on par with recent top-drafted D.

There's a reason why I had him as the #3 prospect going into the draft. Nothing that has happened since has made me doubt that either. He's going to be really good.

Is the reason that #3 was the consensus for most of the year leading up to the draft?

Is that really necessary? I'm sure you've seen enough posts of mine to realize that I'm fairly well informed on what a high end prospect looks like without relying on the typical copy and paste of many rankings.

Never mind him. It was his chance to come on here and be condescending, to make himself feel superior. It seems to be a common HF thing for many. ;)

Agreed. I mean I do it too sometimes, but I really shouldn't. It's immature and unnecessary.

I doubt he's released but could you imagine the boost he'd provide the Americans at the WJC?

I think if I was RF I would let him attend. For an 18yr old, it would be a fun change of pace break from a long frustrating season...and hopefully that break would not be his leg. ;)

It's been fun watching him progress each game. He gets more and more confident as the season goes on and we are starting to see him use his skill. He shows so much poise for an 18YO and his skating is incredible.
