Steal of the draft IMO. It'll take time, but he has such a great hockey sense that I'm not scared about his future. In a couple of years he'll be considered one of the greats of this draft

Ive looked at prospects all year for this draft and I must have researched this guy the least, happy my hawks got him.

On a team with Boqvist, Jokiharju, and two three-year college veterans, Beaudin has unquestionably been the best Hawks defenseman at Traverse City. His vision and hands make him absolutely deadly in the offensive zone, and I've really liked his position and aggressiveness in the neutral and defensive zones.

That’s awesome. I’ve only caught a couple of his games in the Q but he was always great when I did. Has his size caused him any trouble in this tourney?

Agree completely. An 18yo selected late in the first round has clearly bee the best defensemen on our roster. Jokiharju's done decent (though I hoped for more), and I understand Boqvist is younger than the majority of players on the ice (and getting his first real taste of the smaller ice surface). But Beaudin was easily better than both so far, and he was better than guys like Blake Hillman who got a cup of coffee (and a goal) in the NHL last year. Beaudin is just really winning me over after thinking we reached for him at the draft.

I don't think I've watched as much of the games as @Teemu (so hopefully he can further provide some input), but from what I've seen, size hasn't been much of an issue for him, but a lot of that is him simple being very smart and efficient out there. He's not putting himself in many bad positions and he's done a terrific job of getting to loose pucks before the opposition.

He looked bulkier than when I saw him last in Drummondville, though that could always be padding. His size wasn't really a detriment since he is pretty nimble on his feet. That said, this type of lightly-coached tournament isn't generally going to hinder smaller players as much.

Where did this guy disappear to?
Not even a sniff of an invite to WJC Summer Showcase and was a first rounder in 2018 to Chicago? Another case of over hyped small puck mover or oversight by HC?

He’s a late 99 born player, he’s aged out of the WJC. He was at the summer show case last year, at the selection camp I believe as well and had a good year in the Q.

He had a good year in the Q and is going to play in the AHL this season. He's also done well in Hawks prospects camp from a month or so ago.

Speaking from a Hawks fan perspective. I believe we, as fans, are quite happy with how he has progressed so far. Ranked as our #5 prospect in our system. High IQ player who has a decent two-way game. Will he be a top pairing player? I personally don't think so but the hope is he can be a solid second pairing D-man who can be used with another offensive player (Boqvist?)

Cant play world juniors this year. Any sane person would've had him on last year's team, but that team was a disaster.

Meh I'm not so sure about that. I think he was the final cut on defense and if he made it as the 7th guy I dont think people would complain. It wasnt crazy to cut him however. Phillips was a surprise making it but brings a very different skill set and Beaudin was the third best dman trying out from Canada from his own league. Coulda made it but not a travesty that he didnt

Beaudin would've been better than Phillips or McIsaac.

Both guys who play a completely different role than him so theyre tough to compare. I could see Phillips but McIsaac was the only physical dman, plays a defensive game but also moves the puck extremely well. McIsaac was better in the same league this year and thats playing with a bad shoulder. Hes also got a history with hockey Canada. McIsaac makes more sense for that team than Beaudin does

How is this pick looking? Does he project as top 4? He had 15 points in 59 games in his first AHL season.
Looked great with his stint in the NHL. He would've stayed up for the remainder of the season but...obviously the timing wasn't great for him.

Like Boqvist, he seems to play better at the NHL level than the AHL. He's very steady.

So does he project top 4? I think so. But top 2 would be unlikely.

So looks like he’s playing well with the Hawks. Steady very few mistakes. Good ice time with PP and OT time. There’s a lot to like here and I’m pretty sure he’s staying. Anybody have input?

He's looked good. Smart, good passer and skater, has a feel for when to move in a little deeper.

His usage is still a little odd. Might play 18 minutes one night and 12 the next. Watching the game last night in particular it seemed he didn't see the ice a lot in the 3rd, so you'd think "Well maybe the coach isn't quite ready to trust him to close out a close game" but then other recent games he was out there late or in OT.

Looks like he might be healthy scratched next game. Really seems like the Hawks are trying not to be consistently giving all the kids too much ice time.... I mean he's got Kurashev on the 4th line now after playing extremely well. Curious to see how this plays out for the rest of the season.

You're going off by our recent practice lines I assume? Him being on the fourth pair was only due to handedness (hes playing left handed RD with Zadorov a lot, but Boqvist is back and Bowey needed a LD partner).

Almost all of us are sure it means nothing, coz JC is playing 7D basically all the season as is - although he's shown to like the occasional scratch for young guys too. The handling of the young guys definitely follows the same pattern. Dach and Mitchell were the same, give them limited time until they earn it consistently, and then basically no looking back. I like it actually, he's really easing them in, but makes sure to reward them.

Beaudin is trending super well. JC is a huge fan, to a point where it's a running joke for us. He can't stop gushing about him lol. I expect steady bigger minutes after the trade deadline. Well deserved too, his strength and thus game imrpoved significantly this off-season. Very steady and calm.
