If he's really as good as some seem to think, he could make the WJC team next year.

Finland puts a lot of younger players on their WJC teams.

I don't think so, our -98 and -99 defences on mixed are so good. Maybe Kokkonen will be on 2018 and 2019 WJC-tournament.

Next years defence will be something like that:
Välimäki(-98)-Salo(-98)
Vaakanainen(-99)-Heiskanen(-99)
Felixon(-98)-Jokiharju(-98)
Niemeläinen(-98)

Other good options:
Juolevi -98 (will be of course on team if he is not on NHL)
Räsänen E -99
Almari -98
Vesterinen -99
Kotkansalo -98
Teräväinen -99
Reunanen -98

Here's a goal of his from the 18th.

A thing of beauty. This kid is definitely skilled. Too bad that I normally tend to have a lot of focus on the Finnish prospects but this one season I've had my eyes on the other side of the pond.

Without having seen too many of his games, what stands out to me is his size. Already listed as 5"11 and 190lbs. That speaks of a strong framework and he should still have plenty of time to grow height. Even couple of inches would be enough. Weight comes over time as he bulks up. Guess I'm going to have to keep a close eye for this one. Could turn something special.

i've seen a few of Kotkansalo's games, very underrated defensive dman. his d-game is rock solid.

He is an early peaker tho, won't probably grow that much more. I've heard he's been close to his current height a couple of years now. His biggest weakness is skating.

He was 177cm at the 2015 Pohjola Camp(nearly 2 years ago) so he really hasn't grown much since then(180cm now).

Yesterdays game U17 NT game on YouTube, Kokkonen is number #20.

Played 1 game in Liiga (only U16 to do so, one of 3 U17 to do so and 1 of 9 U18)

Played 3 games in Mestis (Only U17, 1 of 5 U18 and only 1 of 2 to register a point)

Played 38 games in U20 Jr. A SM-liiga and got 26 points
Overall 82th (tied 7th D) out of 616
U19 tied 31st (tied 2nd D) out of 266
U18 10th (tied 2nd D) out of 112
U17 2nd (1st by 15 pts in D) out of 35
U16 1st by 15 pts, but the other played only 13 games (Only U16 D to play this year) out of 4

A pretty strong game overall, especially after he became Toni Utunen's pair. Very high offensive zone possession and he generated some chances as well as scoring the goal. Also pretty stable on the defense and seemed to have pretty good reactions / precautions that caused him to stand out positively in comparison to some other Finnish Ds(Not that that's difficult but hey). At least his handling of the situation that caused him to take his first penalty was pretty impressive to me(Until the actual penalty).

He seems a quite safe pick for maybe a top4 role in the NHL but i dont see him being at the same level as Dahlin. I havent seen much of him though..

Im curious what atributes make him such a hyped player?

His numbers are indredible. That being said; I don't see him as a 1st overall talent like others have suggested he may be.

Was a fairly unspectacular, but solid showing from him today. Defensive play was good, perhaps a bit tentative defending the rush, but some of that seemed to be due to his partner and him not being quite on the same wavelength. Most of the time his gap control was good, though, and he used his body well to separate the puck carrier from the puck. Looks very strong already, which shows on his boardplay. Offensively he kept things REALLY simple. I don't remember him rushing it up, and most of the time he would let his partner make the breakout pass. No mistakes really, but nothing spectacular either, which isn't all that surprising for a prospect of his age playing in Liiga. Hopefully he starts playing more confidently.

His skating looks pretty average for Liiga, which isn't that alarming for his age either, but I'm a bit concerned about how much further he can develop his physical abilities. I've heard he's basically stopped growing and is already quite heavy, which gives me vibes of Aleksi Saarela. I'll be watching more of his games for sure.

Looking from a statistical standpoint he looks like he has a cold start, at least from my expectations. What is up, injuries or isn't the statistics displaying his actual play?

From what I've heard about him he never really hasn't been that good of a prospect. Overhyped. I don't know if he will be even a 1st round pick.

I mean he impressed me at Hlinka, and his numbers statistically are in the tier of Ristolainen, Juolevi, Mättää, Pokka and past top finnish defensemen prospects. But i had the impression that he could really contend for the no.1 overall in 2019 especially after finns saying that he could be better than Dahlin.

I mean it's still very early but i feel like he should be a Liiga regular at this point, maybe its just my expectations being too high.

The couple Liiga games I saw, he was decent. Left me wondering how he put up those points in juniors, though. He didn't show much at all offensively. Defensively he knew how to use his good physique, but especially in the second game he made some rookie mistakes. Gives me those Saarela-vibes of an early peaker, minus Saarela's elite skating. Have to admit I got caught up in the hype a bit too easily here.

One year is long time in the development of a young player.
I don't know any obstacles or reasons why Kokkonen cannot have same development curve what Heiskanen had least year.

Give a time for 16 yrs old kid god sake.
