"The following players have won the Max Kaminsky trophy (as the league's top defenseman) in their (original) draft year since 1990: Aaron Ekblad, Ryan Ellis, Drew Doughty, Bryan Berard, and Chris Pronger."

Some good company right there

Sergachev also is the youngest player ever to win the trophy. He was a later birthday than all of those guys.

You don't have to hate the player just because you hate the team.

I'm also a Leafs fan and I think this is a great pick for Montreal.

Maybe but I already like PK and Price ... I can't possibly like 3 Hab players and still call myself a Leaf fan ;)

How would you compare Sergachev and Provorov? Both seem to be smooth skating physical D men with great shots and a good first pass.

They're very different...Sergachev has terrific physical tools like skating, size and shot. He's shown great offensive instincts and hands. Certainly the upside of a #1. The knocks on him are, he defends only okay despite being big and strong because he doesn't read the play the same way in his own zone, and he's inconsistent. He also failed to stand out in a positive way at higher levels (TPG, U18), so you worry the NHL game will be too fast for him to make some of the flashy plays he pulls off in junior.

Provorov is above average at most things, but can wither under pressure. He's not nearly as good of a skater or shooter.

Are Habs fans believing now that Edmonton would've picked him 4th overall if Pulju didn't slip? Chiarelli said there isn't a potential 1D available in the draft right before draft day, there's no way he would go on and pick Sergachev after pretty much doubting his potential publicly.

I think I'll believe the sources saying they were, in fact, looking to draft Sergachev at 4 if Pulju didn't fall rather than your gut feeling. Thanks for your opinion though.

Provorov is a hell of a skater, probably better than Sergachev. What Serg beats Provorov in is his shot and his physicality/size. Other than that I think Provorov is a better passer and better in his defensive zone.

When I think of Provorov I think of Pietrangelo whereas Sergachev reminds me of Justin Faulk. Two really good players in their own right, so it's nothing to fret over, I just think they have different styles.

That would have been logical for Edmonton to pick any forward not named Puljujarvi over Sergachev or Juolevi. Yeah. I,ll believe the source too

Think about this logically. If the Oilers do not feel that Sergachev is a future Norris winner, but still have him 4th on their list, that simply means they like him more than other available forwards and defensemen.

Google our local media and employed Oilers staff. Word was Sergachev was the guy at #4. Obviously with right handed Pulju available at #4, Chia sprints to the stage to give McDavid his future RW.

I'm high on Serg. You guys will love him. Best D man in the draft most likely, I think between him and Fabbro those two were the best D prospects.

Did you notice Pulju didn hav his name on jersey.... hmm. I think they all did. Just saying!

CBJ threw a huge wrench into things.

I'm happy the way it all worked out though. I think if Pulju wasn't there we were going Sergachev or trading the pick. Crazy twist of fortune, Pulju was a no brainer to take. We need right handed shots up front. Plus with his size, skating ability, hockey IQ, work ethic, etc. it was the easiest draft choice Chia will ever make after taking McDavid at #1.

"Hey, I don't believe you're good enough to be a #1D, welcome to the Oilers!"

"Hey fans, there's no #1D in this draft but I'm gonna spend the 4OA on a dman anyways, hope you didn't mind the long season of suffering!"

None of the big insiders (Mckenzie, Friedman, Lebrun, etc) reported this rumour, and no one said this at all before the draft when there was virtually no chance Pulju would drop, I think it's fair to be skeptical.

I see more Gonchar in Sergachev than Markov.
Provorov looks more like the next Markov.

Ding, ding, ding, ding... I've been saying this too! I had Sergachev as my #1 D in the draft for this exact reason. He reminds me very much of Gonchar. Great pick Habs  (crying as a fan of a division rival)

They like Sergachev more than Dubois. This is not complicated.

If Edmonton was looking at Sergachev at 4, thank you Columbus for taking Dubois.

Some people may scoff at it, but Sergachev has all the tools to be a big time defender in the league and yes, that include being the next Markov for the Habs. Maybe not the exact skill set or on the exact level prime Markov was, but similar, fill the same role and maybe even provide a few things Markov didn't, like the physical aspect of his game. Will his defense be on the level of a prime Markov? That I'm not too sure of, but I can see him filling the same role and providing similar results. Sergachev, if he reaches his ceiling, is going to be instrumental for the Habs and a huge part of the team moving forward.

Not that it's relevant, but yes.

Dubois is a lock to be a 2 way 1st liner, hes already a complete player with very few weaknesses in his game. Sergachev has several things he needs to work on, i guess everyones entitled to their opinion but theres no way i'd personally take Sergachev over Dubois.

ill be following Sergachev/Dubois/Juolevi in the next few years, i have both of them ahead of Sergachev right now.

What does this have to do with what I posted?
