I like Luke and think he is definitely worth a 1st round pick, but I watched one of his recent games that were streamed on youtube and I have to disagree with contender for 1OA. Something about HFboards and hyping players up.

So where would you rank him? He’s at least a consensus top 10 pick. If you have him lower, your opinion is probably more of a hot-take than anything I said. I think he should be consensus top 5. I’m not sure what the big disagreement is here otherwise. And I qualified what I said. I didn’t say it’s a big sample. Maybe you saw one of his lesser games he’s played so far this season. I’m not sure that defeats my point.

No offense but watching a single game probably explains your standpoint

Luke is a top-10 talent in this draft at a minimum, likely top-5. He is an all-around strong defenseman who comes from a family of incredible skaters (Quinn, Jack)

I can see him top 10. I like Owen Power better than Luke by the way but I'm not even sure if Owen is good enough to go 1OA. He is close though.

wait.... so some of their players contracted the virus?

I’m not sure. The statements released didn’t make clear which team in particular. I think it was other teams, but their are also suspicions that certain players might’ve had COVID. They’ve had games postponed the last few weeks that were rescheduled.

This season is huge to figure that out, but I don't think one and done at Michigan is out of the question. So that would be 2022
Dmen rarely make the jump from the draft to the NHL. He just made the 2021 draft by a week. Likely will have to play his freshman year at Michigan. Whether he would need a Sophomore year like Quinn will remain to be seen. He is taller than his 2 older brothers. But, he has a lanky build, pretty lean. Need to add some muscle and strength in the next couple of years.

Last report I saw he said he was just over 6 feet tall now and around 166 lbs.

He’s listed at 6’2 176 this year.

Think Covid is likely on the NTDP side. They canceled games against Chicago and Muskegon. Subsequently Chicago/Muskegon moved a 2021 game against each other to this weekend.

Luke Hughes (D, U.S. NTDP-USHL), has only played nine games this season, and no regular season USHL games as the NTDP 18s were recently paused. In those few games, though, often versus lower levels of competition, he has been very impressive. “You have a now 6-foot-2 defenseman with great skating, skill and IQ, that’s a dynamic package. He’s been the best player I’ve seen so far this season,” said one scout. More than one scout said he’d be their No. 1 prospect right now.

NHL Draft 2021 No. 1 pick candidates: Pronman on the wide-open field

He looks really good to me. Incredible skater already and plays a smart game. I think he goes high lottery for sure. Whether it is fair or not, big brother Quinn’s success is going to get someone to bite.

Only one preseason game, but I think it looks like he's made an obvious jump in his level of play. He's now a contender for the 1OA, as far as I'm concerned.

Whether he ends up 1OA is a different discussion, but his display in today's game was a dominant performance from the back end. He absolutely took over the game with skating and sense. I thought I was watching Miro Heiskanen. At no point last season did I see him play this well. There were flashes of this and he was a good player, but he looks like he might've figured out how to put it all together between last season and this one.

Answering this debate, it was just a really great game. I think Hughes is still a top five pick, but he hasn't been this good very often after watching a bunch of more games he's played this season.

The biggest issue I have with his game is that he tries to do too much. Not because he has poor hockey sense, but he's trying to dominate games at all times because he can skate circles around everyone on the ice and play keep-away because of it. He runs himself into problems because of this. He's too aggressive, and needs to reign it in, a little. I like that he's increased his aggressiveness in the last year, but he needs to find a better balance.

I like his skillset and think he's almost a certainty to be a top pair defensemen who can chip in 30+ points and be a good defensive presence. He'll be elite in the transition game because of his skating and he's above-average moving the puck. Long term, I think he'll be really good and could be elite. But he's not elite right now. I think a year at Michigan will benefit him. Still too many errors trying to do too much.

I hope he doesn’t rise too far up the draft lol. I want my Devils to have a chance to draft him but without it being seen as a reach.
It’s early in the season yet but I cannot see my Devils NOT having a lottery pick . With my “luck” the Devils will pick in the top 3 and Hughes will be projected in the 5-10 range and Devils don’t reach for him and they draft a bust....
From what I have read so far abou this draft , I’d be ok with trading down and making sure you can still get Hughes but gain another asset or two.
Where can a person watch games of his ? YouTube ? Any other legit site that is permissible to post a link ?

This draft is so wide open that I doubt there will even be a reasonable consensus among scouts which would pretty much negate the whole "reach" thing

There’s no chance the Devils would trade down for Hughes, he’s already in the top five in a lot of updated rankings. I’ve seen him as high as 2OA, I wouldn’t count on drafting him without a lottery win unless the team finishes at the bottom.

Outproduced Quinn in his U17 year and his U18 year so far as well.

Quinn U17- 24 pts in 57 games (.42pts/gm)
Luke U17- 28pts in 48 games (.58pts/gm)

Quinn U18- 53pts in 65 games (.82pts/gm)
Luke U18- 26 pts in 22 games (1.18pts/gm)

to be fair though Luke is on a much better NTDP squad. Likely a fair number of high round picks, while Quinn was playing with Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris, and then not many more notable guys. But regardless if Luke blows Quinn’s numbers out of the water and then on top of being 4 inches taller and stronger, the hype could get crazy.

Tracking better than Quinn at same age.

I wonder if teams will stupidly let Luke pass by and drop out of top3 or top 5 like Quinn.

ps Canucks are off to a 1-3 start. Shortened Covid season would not be a bad season at all to be a lottery.

can we imagine the 2 Hughes brother on the Canucks ?
