Not a very good first 2 periods for Hughes.

The kid has a ton of talent, even more than Quinn does, but his decision making is nowhere close to QH’s.

Just a lot of baffling decisions right now.
He's been pretty disappointing this year compared to last year IMO. He hasn't played with nearly the same amount of urgency, especially in the defensive zone.

Hopefully the challenge at the next level will push him to play more like he did last year.

That entire Michigan team played super sluggish until overtime. With the amount of talent they have, they should have wiped the floor against Penn State. They played like they were entitled to go to the frozen four with how many lazy plays they made. There were an endless amount of flyby's, blown coverages, and players too lazy to stop and start.

What?
that top line dominated possession, 3 posts, and a majority of the time they had massive shifts in the offensive zone. 18 shots from that line alone, and even the michigan broadcasters were like finally!!! after they potted one

Brilliant offensive player but even at this point his defensive game is absolutely shambolic

He could be signing his contract within a few hours

Brisson probably already has it ready

he had a nightmare 1st
Thought he played his game in the 2nd period
But the 3rd period he went into “hero” mode

Even the broadcasters were saying somebody needs to calm him down. You can’t skate through the stingiest team in the NCAA.

Quinnipiac looked very comfortable playing a Trap, there were lots of points where Michigan kept trying to skate right at them. For a team that had a week to prepare, they didn't look very prepared.

Overall, I would say it was a disappointing sophomore year for Hughes.

Other than perhaps the games against Minnesota, Hughes was better than any player he went up against. And many nights he tried to be the guy who played junior/college playing against the plumbers in the local pickup game, he tried to be to fancy and to risky and made many big blunders. Last season when he played a much more simple game he was way more effective. I don't know if it was because of all the players we lost to the NHL made him feel like he had to do it all himself, but he was not nearly as good this year.

The talent is still elite, but he needs to simplify things when he gets to Jersey.

That sameskovich, duke, TJ Hughes line
They were useless. I would have benched them.

Brindley, fantilli, mcgroarty did well for about 2 periods. They should have been double shifting

And so should casey and edwards pairing who was doing so well.

Completely agree. Even in the WJC I feel like he played with the world on his shoulders. He’s a great player. But, there were some nights he didn’t play with enough respect for his opponent’s talent. I think it took him a while to fully recover from his injury, but he was trying to do too much many nights.

Hughes will be a really effective player when he simplifies his game. He has all the talent you’d want in a defenseman. He has decent size, one of the best skaters, a great point shot, and phenomenal playmaking ability. He just needs to settle down.

He will figure things out at the NHL level. I think what is more alarming then his work on defense it the amount of criticism this kid gets because his last name is Hughes and he is a Devils draft pick. Oh well , he is going to probably play against the Sabres on Tuesday to debut at home in thinking. Jist give this kid 2 to 3 years in the NHL and I guarantee all the haters in here will be wishing he was on their favorite teams blueline.

People were saying the same thing about Jack his first two years. He's trying todo do too much, he should slow his game down and rely on his team mates, he should be patient and allow the play to him.

Now he's a +40 goal, 95 point guy who is about to break the Devils single season scoring record, and he's doing it in hero mode on every shift. They only difference is he needed a 15 pounds of muscle and a little humility.

The whole family is super competitive and willing to do whatever to improve. He will polish off the weaknesses in his game just like Quinn and Jack did.
