Fowler (2010) has the 5th most point of any player drafted at 12th since 1990. Only Hossa (1997), Tanguay (1998), Little (2006) and Hamhuis (2001) have more and Hamhuis only has 35 more points than Fowler (in 413 more games). 11 of 31 players drafted 12OA were defensemen.

Fowler’s 7th in games played, those four plus Marc Staal (2005) and Myers (2008) and Myers only 23 more games played.

In the 2010 draft itself, Fowler’s 3rd overall in games played, only Skinner (#7) and Seguin (#2) have played more games.

Fowler is 15th in points overall, Klingberg (#131) is the only defensemen ahead of him in points, he’s 13th in points.

The seven forwards with more points who were also drafted after him: Stone (#178) is 5th, Tarasenko (#16) is 6th, Kuznetsov (#26) is 7th, Schwartz (#14) is 8th, Gallagher (#147) is 10th, Toffoli (#47) is 11th and Nelson (#30) is 12th.

I’m not sure how Fowler is a bust or even a bad pick. Anaheim’s 2010 draft does pale in comparison to their epic 2011 draft (Rakell, Gibson, Karlsson, Manson).

So what’s the story with Luke Hughes? I’m pretty sure there’s absolutely zero chance that Cam Fowler is being drafted this year or down the road.

Seriously. I feel like this whole thread is just comparing Luke to Quinn. I wish someone could describe Luke without saying “Quinn but slower and less creative” or “Quinn but taller and better defensively”. It’s just lazy.

Luke Hughes is like what would happen if Mark Barberio was blessed with the Flash TV Speedforce.

I have sincere doubts about almost everything related to his offense and I don't think he's exceptional defensively.

He's a future speedy, shifty Brian Campbell with less transitional defense and your happiness with this pick all depends on if you like, need, or want a defenseman who fits that mould.

This comment stuck out to me in an ocean of Cam Fowler comparisons. I'm curious where your doubts lie, and how you reconcile them with Luke's pretty consistently good production. I think he's shown good vision and playmaking ability with the NTDP this year, and I don't really see his shot as behind the curve for his age. I think if you couple that with his pretty outrageous skating ability you're looking at at least a very mobile, two-way blueliner on your second pairing.

I personally think the drafting to be on brother's team is a bit overrated. It makes for a great media narrative, probably fueled by the Sedins, but always seems to boost prospects more than what they are. If being on your brother's team was truly that important to the actual player we wouldn't see the Staal brothers turn out like it has. A few other examples as well. BPA almost always outperforms over narratives.

I do think Luke at worst will be a top4 D. Best luck to the team that drafts him.
Having two family members on the same team can be awkward if a GM decides to trade one, as it can offend the other.

Incredible skater; have started watching more of his film as Ive gotten to assuming he goes to New Jersey at 4 (I have it going Power Beniers Guenther)

Should be fun to see two Hughes brothers flying down the ice together for some years to come... and if by some stroke of (un)luck then Im sure Luke will do great wherever else he goes (itd be Detroit if not NJ)

The last two decades of 12th overall players:

Dan Hamhuis
Steve Eminger
Hugh Jessiman
AJ Thelen
Marc Staal
Bryan Little
Ryan McDonagh
Tyler Myers
Calvin De Haan
Cam Fowler
Ryan Murphy
Mikhail Grigorenko
Max Domi
Brenden Perlini
Denis Guryanov
Michael McLeod
Martin Necas
Noah Dobson

Cam Fowler is perfectly within expectations of an average 12th overall player, and maybe even above average. You’re making yourself look extremely silly.
Thanks for sharing this.

Every year people overestimate what reasonable expectations are for draft picks.

I swear we need some sort of bot that posts this each time discussions like this comes up.

A lot of people still don’t even realize that about half of draft picks around #20 and higher never even become NHL regulars.

I think that Luke is a top 15 pick at best. if he does go in the top 5, then i'll be very shocked
Care to expand on why it would shock you that he goes top 5? If he falls to 6th (Detroit) I’d be ecstatic as he fills a need I’d wager he’s BPA on a good amount of DRW fan’s personal boards at that point.

His way of actual defense, thats why. He isn't bad per say on offense, but on the defensive end he needs to improve. I feel like clarke is the first defenseman off the board rather than him

He does leave some to be desired after the initial poke check. You can also point to Clarke’s knock knee as an obstacle also. Each of the top guys this year have something they need to work on. I like both Hughes & Clarke and would love to add them to the pipeline.

If he's not BPA, they shouldn't take him, bloodlines or not.
Hes up there for BPA at four

Hes seven days removed from the 2022 draft; hes almost a year younger than some
Of the other top-10 candidates. And the best skater in the draft whos 6'1"

Considering pedigree and his reach, he should be considered for a top-5 pick; which means he can be BPA and a bloodline, which was much as people dont want it to it matters a lot to ownership and Jack/Luke. It would do wonders for NJ if they work out va the same risk taken if you draft him or Clarke (possibility they dont hit potential)

This thread is so strange, very little talk about Luke as a player.

I really like him. Terrific skater, very high hockey IQ, anticipates the play well. Great hands, puck skills and passing ability.

I don't really understand the comments about his defensive game. He's never going to be a physical, crease-clearing defender, but he doesn't need to be because he is such a good skater and plays a proactive style of hockey, always being in the right place at the right time.

He's a top3 pick for me.

I agree with this, although I was rate his IQ about average
