I know...I know....it's the Habs. Hardy har har.....

but....

Lane Hutson has been our best player through two games.

I didn't watch this game but I don't think he really stood out against Toronto. Made a nice dangle at one point that lead to nothing, had a bad giveaway in the 3rd, literally the only things I remember from his game.

Pretty sure Montembault has been the best Hab through two games.

Fun to watch. Great at creating space and opportunity. So many great setups tonight. Was good in his first three games as well. He's got a real shot at the Calder this year.

“Best Hab this season” when he was unremarkable in 50% of the games and Montembault had a 48 save shutout lol
Hutson wasn’t unremarkable though, although I agree that Montembeault was fantastic.

Hutson showed a lot of offensive skill, puck control, and made a couple of nice passes that lead to high quality shots. He made one move that left John Tavares completely twisted in knots. He had some lapses defensively but that’s to be expected from an undersized rookie.

Had two assists tonight and looks to be a natural powerplay QB with terrific vision. His slap pass to Gallagher was a high IQ precision play.

He’s played 41 minutes and 10 seconds in two games. I think that’s a pretty solid indication of how well he’s performed.

To give it some context, from defensemen that have played two games thus far:

Morgan Rielly played 44:18
Chris Tanev played 40:08
Kaiden Guhle played 45:08
Mike Matheson played 52:43
Mikhail Sergachev played 48:51
Sean Durzi played 47:29
Ian Cole played 41:12

That’s just off the top of my head.

sure Hutson with a 27.78 Corsi For% against Toronto "lead both teams in puck possession." In actuality he was below Barron, Matheson, Savard and every single Leafs defender. xGF% even worse. He was not remotely the best dman on the ice that game, the gaslighting is nuts.

That's par for the course ehre with a small minoriy of Habs fanatics driving the narrative.

But to be fair most Hab fans have realistic expectations even with hope full glasses like most fanbases, there are just so many of them that it seems at times that the inmates are running the asylum.

So you use advance stats on a game where the leafs completly dominated the habs?. Huston was still the best. The fact that you put Barron who was a total train wreck show that you're argument doesn't make sense

I was literally just responding to the claim that he lead everyone in puck possession. Of course you need advanced stats for that. Consider that if the Leafs dominated the Habs it’s pretty likely that they had a dman who was better.

He's still figuring things out , I want him to be a little more decisive with the puck , I think he's holding on to it a little too much but at the same time he's figuring out just how much he can hold it , players don't seem to want to pressure him at 5 on 5 , they already feel like he's going to cook them if they do pressure him at the point. Its only a matter of time before he's on pp1

The narrative around Hutson reminds me so much Subban as prospect+first few nhl games, not that they play similar but the narrative. Subban just like Hutson was heavily questioned for his defensive game as the hyped was getting bigger after his amazing WJC, which was to a point a lot of people were saying he would be a trainwreck in the NHL and he is a rover and useless defensively that he would never translate his game to the NHL. While I would not claim Subban was ever the best defender it was quite clear that he had the 'it' factor. I see similar pattern with Hutson, people will constantly run the narrative that he cannot defend and he is too small. But when he has the puck on his stick he is the best player on the Habs, smart, poised, elusive, unreal vision, puckhandling, hustle and ability to generate offense.

I must admit, part of me toned down my expectation last year when people were doubting he would be able to hold a regular spot in a defensive pair and he could only develop as PP specialist as he is a "liability" defensively. I believed that but the more I watch him and I realize this is non sense, this is the guy you want on the ice to generate offense. He is a difference maker and he will have a regular spot in a NHL top pair eventually, he does have that 'it' factor that superstar player has and his weaknesses while still there were way overblown.

It's very similar yes. You had people parroting that Subban was bad defensively even when Jacques Martin of all coaches was trusting him as a rookie in playoff games
