LD Darnell Nurse (2013, 7th, EDM)

Jared Cowen was once considered a top 4 lock and Nurse is Jared Cowen 2.0. They are eerily similar junior players. Physically dominant, mean and can both skate.. But unfortunately both guys can't move the puck and make egregious decisions with the puck.

Nurse has improved that aspect of the game. He is a solid dman.

What? Cowen only put up 21 points in his draft year. They aren't the same player.

I'm not a huge stat guy but...

Nurse PPG in his draft year: .602

Cowen PPG in his draft year: .432

Fairly similar. Bur their draft years don't matter at this point.

Cowen put up 14 PTS in 17 playoff games in his 19 year old season

Nurse has put up 4 PTS in 8 playoff games in his 19 year old season. One goal was an empty net.

That's actually a pretty significant difference, nearly 40%. That's the difference between a 30 point d-man and a 50 point d-man.

I don't think the sample size is large enough yet to bring up playoff stats in 19 year old seasons. Better off averaging it over the season.

Lmao. Who cares about draft year. And thats a pretty big gap.

Nurse is a ppg chl D in his 19 year old season.

Nurse also plays no PP time now with Denagelo here.

You should stick to not being a stat guy if you cant use them

Everyone worrying if nurse will become a stud at the nhl im sure now with how things are shaping up in edmonton they will be happy if nurse plays a tough defensive game with a solid first pass. Not looking like they will need much offense from the points and its not like nurse is some kind of offensive black hole like some ppl are making him out to be

LIRL at Cowen comparisons, Cowen was never half the skater Nurse is.

You should try watching a game? Nurse does play on the PP now, he has a power play goal in the playoffs. He stands in front of the net like an oaf because he is big. They don't want him touching the puck on the power play unless it's trying to bang in a rebound because he holds everyone back otherwise, with his slow and questionable decision making.

Wow, not biased at all, are you?

Sounds like you don't like him. That says more about his play than your comments.

 oh boy.

To be fair, I don't think we should dismiss his opinion completely. He obviously watches more SSM games than just about any Oilers fan.

Honestly I'm not super excited about Nurse. I didn't think he looked good in his two regular season games, plus I've always questioned his decision-making and offensive IQ. I've also seen some SSM fans list him as only their third-best defenceman, which is a little discomforting. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned into an Erik Gudbranson-type, maybe with a little more offence.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I've watched Nurse play 20+ times this year, and he has easily been there best d man every night imo.

This is also coming from a guy who prefers a steady hard nosed defenseman, rather than a flashy offensive defenseman

I've easily seen Nurse 60+ times over the last three years. I don't buy JoiqueBell's description of him at all. Certainly when he says that "both guys can't move the puck" you have to wonder what the agenda is aside from pumping up DeAngelo.

Nurse's role changed when SSM got DeAngelo who has just exploded since leaving Sarnia. Before that he was a key guy on the pp. Last year Nurse had twice as many points as any other 'Hounds defenseman and he was often the guy leading the rush.

10 mins in and I don't want this series to end. Nurse is bringing it and forcing the play up

SSM fans will tell you that DeAngelo has EASILY been the Greyhounds best D-man. No offence but their opinion is worth more than yours, considering us Oilers fans all have a certain bias.

Anyhow, Nurse has looked good so far tonight... I'm excited to see how this series plays out.

The difference i can say though is, Nurses sizes gives him a clear advantage in the future over deangelo.

The Soo are firing on all cylinders. Everyone is playing well lol. Nurse has had a great game. McDavid is getting his chances but he would against any dman.

Offensive Defenseman stick out more. I was focused on Nurse and thought he was great tonight.

IMO he's Bogosian 2.0 (AKA Phaneuf 3.0). He sas the all the physical tools to be a number 1 defenseman and will look like one at times. He doesn't move the puck well enough or have the hocky IQ to thrive in that role but would be a great 2 or 3 depending on who you pair him with.

He played really well against McDavid tonight. Only so much anybody can do to shut him down.

Edmonton fans should be pumped for this Erie vs the Soo series. Future's bright.

Is Nurse gonna be in the NHL next year? That draft was insane, look at the list of dmen drafted in 1st round.

Jones
Nurse
Ristolainen
Morin
Morrissey
Pulock
Zadorov
Theodore

Insane, those all look like bets to be top 4 guys.

It's got nothing on the 2012 draft TBH. Murray, Reinhart, Rielly, Lindholm, Trouba, Maatta, Dumba, Ceci, Pouliot, and Severson all playing in the NHL and look likely to be at least top 4's (with quite a few looking like top pairing and potentially #1 Dmen).

However, it's still a good year for defensemen and by combining the 2012 and 2013 NHL drafts, I think you have one of the very best back-to-back years for producing NHL defensemen.

Yeah I could definitely see him turning out similar to Bogosian. Big physical guy who can make the outlet pass or skate the puck out of the zone himself, but who is prone to the occasional brain fart.

Right now my expectation of Nurse is that he becomes a solid #3 or #4 guy.

I'm not a huge fan, but I think he becomes better than that. I'd say an average 2-way #2 who you'd want as your #3 to be a truly cup-contending team. Could become better, but I don't think he's the #1 you want on your team when you're in the cup finals.
