If that’s the litmus test, the NHL is full of unworthy defenders.
Yeah that was a pretty bad comparison on my part, my bad. However my point still stands, you said he is physically "too good" for the league. Not sure where you're seeing that, it's not like he's Seth Jones...

Again, I've posted numerous video clips backing my opinion up as to why Byram is not a good defender (ask anyone on the Oilers boards and they'll confirm it). I'm too lazy to dig it up right now because frankly I'm not in a good mood and I do not care to do it at the moment but maybe at some point later I will.
Not trying to be rude, but why would I care about what the Oilers board has to say? I am not Byram's biggest fan, he wasn't my first choice and he probably is going to fall in future redraft lists since a lot of people overrate his offensive traits. However, saying Byram isn't a good defender is a very weird statement. As I said in my post, he started off the season as a shutdown defender and that was how he was used until he showed more prowess for putting up points. Then as the season went along, he was used in more offensive situations and he personally focused on scoring which took away from his defensive responsibilities. I just think it's a losing battle to state he isn't a good defender without having all the context here. Additionally, if you're saying he isn't a good defender because he's strictly an offencive-defenceman then you're out to lunch, he plays very different to Barrie, Makar, or Quenneville in that he isn't as dynamic.

He’s almost 6-1 200lbs and a great skater. In the CHL, he’s one of the biggest and fastest guys on the ice. In the NHL, he won’t ever be that. He’s very average-sized for the NHL. So I’d like to see how he adapts to playing against men sooner rather than later.

Feel free to PM me and I can back it up.

Either way there's plenty of posters on these boards who know what they're talking about and whose opinions I take very seriously and could make it in the scouting industry if they wanted to (or perhaps have already tried that route and decided it was not for them).

If Byram's skating is so poor and the prospect is over-rated, than Dobson is a bust in comparison. Oilers are so weak with RHD, he should have easily slotted into more games. Not only is skillset perfectly suited for the team, but desperate need could have overlooked his flaws.

Byram is still a young player and likely returning to the WHL, he'll spend another season dominating and improving his game. You might question his skating, but Scouts suggest otherwise and will be a far superior player than Dobson when they reach the NHL.

Skating wise yes but he'll be that anywhere. Size wise he's not one of the bigger guys at all

Um, Dobson is property of NYI...

Evan Bouchard is property of EDM.

That was not my point. My point was that I personally have outlined clearly in the Oilers draft thread as to what my problems with Byram's game are. I should've been more clear on that point I guess. There's several video clips there where I clearly showcase his poor defensive game, his frankly head-scratching decisions in the defensive zone and how he plays the game as a 4th forward most of the time (this is particularly evident on the man advantage). If I wasn't drunk and in a bad mood I'd dig it up myself. Maybe I shouldn't have posted at all considering where my head is at at the moment. My apologies.

My god, as someone that has seen Byram play countless times the past 2 seasons, it is quite obvious on here who has never seen him play when reading comments.

There is so much untrue things being said in last couple pages. Please try watching him LIVE. Trust me you will be blown away

And no i am not an Avs fan

Why are the Oilers playing an Islanders prospect.

Answer that.

Hm, Zaddy rates very high for posters whose opinions I'd trust on these boards, actually probably is my #1 poster in that regard right now. From what I can remember, has made numerous good points and observations throughout the years. So the pure dismissal and rudeness here's pretty curious. Give it some thought, I'd suggest.

And he isn't the only poster-worth-reading that has had not entirely positive things to say about Byram, it's just that the noise of the pro-Byram mob drowns out the dissonance.

It is worth a laugh when those that pretty clearly do know what they're talking about get ridiculed and disregarded with the "internet scout" comments, just because they have an opinion people don't want to hear.

I'll be over the moon if he turns out as good as ~90% of the Avs board thinks he will, unfortunately it's - for the most part - the opinions I value the highest that disagree with the "Byram is a physical, elite skating, 2 way powerhouse that will terrorize the NHL for years" descriptions.

Only time will tell. **** measuring on the internet certainly doesn't get us any closer to finding out.

Serious questions. In your opinion,

Are the issues you identified fixable with additional development?

What do you think Byram tops out as? Why?

Would you take Broberg over Byram? Why or why not?

Here's the thing. The Avs have the luxury of not rushing Byram into the NHL and giving him every opportunity to develop his full potential. Helping him do whatever he needs to achieve that is my goal. The decisive factor for me ultimately comes down to whether he would get enough minutes every night to work on issues to his game. The speed of the game, the ability to leverage himself in scrums against the boards, etc. There will be an adjustment for certain.

Between Rosen Timmins, Connauton, Graves and if necessary, Alt, the D is covered on the third pair until Cole returns regardless of whether Byram is back in the WHL or elsewhere.

No disrespect because we have some extremely knowledgeable posters on the Avs forum (SEPH, Henchman, Bender, etc.) and I've learned to generally trust their opinions and give them the benefit of the doubt aside from my own assessments as a fan. Still, I recall reading an article about Makar after the draft and regarding some scouts' opinions about him even though he went 4th. Even amongst the experts, they've their own differences of opinion.

In Cale Makar, did Avalanche get best player in 2017 NHL Draft?

When the Avs drafted this kid, all I could see in my head was Byram-Makar, Byram-Makar, Byram-Makar.

What a dynamite future pairing (hypothetically, because we know these things seldom play out the same way they look on paper.

AVs can use multiple combinations since they have so many young players with a few vets. They might have the best young group of DMen under 25 in the NHL.

I prefer Girard-Makar and
Byram-Timmins

So wait, knowledgeable and well-respected hockey men and scouts alike rave about Byram being a high-end, top-pairing D yet posters on HF Boards are trashing him? Yeah, I'll stick with the pro opinions on this one... especially since my own eye test tells me Byram is a flat-out stud. And I'm a Flyers fan with no skin in the game here.
