I think they’ll need a good reason to send him down rather than vice versa. He has absolutely nothing left to prove in juniors. The AHL is where he’d be ideally, but since that isn’t an option, I think he’ll get a sheltered 3rd pairing role with some pp2 time.

If he doesn’t look NHL ready after 9 games then I wonder if loaning him to a European league men’s team would be something the Av’s would consider.I think that would be the best thing for his development unless he really wants to play another year with the Giants.

If they can do that, it’d be best. I’ve never heard of anyone going that route.

Problem with that is that Hockey Canada wouldnt let him go to Europe because of the NHL-CHL agreement.

I know people are saying he has nothing left to prove in the WHL... but I can't think of many defenseman that have lived up to their expectations playing in the NHL in their D+1 year. All the highly-touted prospects like Ekblad, Hanifin, Ristolainen, Larsson have all been a pretty big disappointment and honestly probably hindered their development a bit, with the exception of Seth Jones who was heavily sheltered and got to develop underneath Weber, Josi, etc.

If they do keep him up, I sure as hell hope they're willing to go the Draisaitl route and send him down if he starts struggling, even if it's past the 9 games.

I laugh at all the amateurs playing fantasy NHL GM and player development experts on the internet. nothing left to prove. every year that line cracks me up.
I would love to see him jump in the nhl this year, but I think it would be more beneficial for him to stay another year in the whl. Play his 9 games with the Avs then go back play the juniors, whl playoffs and hopefully make it back to the memorial cup. Then join the avs in the playoffs and win the cup

I like your thinking my man!!

Similar to the NCAA route by Makar...I like it.

Once in a while an 18 year old defenseman comes along that can play well in the NHL So I guess we will see. Each prospect has their own path and I love the approach the Lanche took with Makar. However that was apples and oranges since Makar jumped from the AJHL to a major college program which provided a big step up in competition. Byram would be going back to a league he dominated so the benefit might seem more muted. CHL is a great league though and another season will go fast especially with a World junior tournament. Although I tend to err on this side of caution with prospects I don’t pretend to know enough about Byram to have the answer to this. Hell of a prospect though and it will suck to face him 5 times a year.

I mean... it is legitimate. You want them to face that next obstacle and be challenged. That’s how development of any skill works.

Paz gave us 4 very real examples as to why that argument is not really all that legitimate. There's a hell of a lot more that goes into skill development than just taking the "next obstacle and be challenged" based solely on now they have the opportunity to do so. You take the next step only when ready to take that next step. And only Bryam can answer that question, not those who like to play fantasy NHL GM around these parts.

he would go whl...this would be an oppertunity for him to work on parts of his game that he was not working on before, the avalanch would say we want to see you put on 5 to 10 pounds of muscel and work on this or that in your game...there is always something to work on no 18 year old has nothing left to prove

Of those 4, only 1 was dominating his competition, and of course that’s going to be the CHL guy. The other 3 had room to grow in their prior league. On top of that, Ekblad had a pretty solid start to his NHL career. It wasn’t until he started taking injuries that his development started to slide.

Those of us “playing fantasy GM” are doing so based on the comments of guys like Bob McKenzie and Joe Sakic. And I don’t know why that’s said so condescendingly. Its what all of us do here literally every single day.

Nothing left to prove? Excuse me? Did the Giants win the Memorial Cup?!
Byram certainly did his job with the Giants. That's all you can expect. He's not the entire team, although he did lead the playoffs in scoring as a Dman. Not sure what more he can do there. Ideally he could play in the AHL and get a few opportunities with the Avs to test him. You want a player to be tested.

I also really doubt if going to Europe would help his development.

Either he is NHL ready or he isn't , another year in the WHL isn't going to hurt his development.

I think he is actually ready for a top 4 role with the Avs but they have enough depth that they don't need him for next year.

It will be very interesting to see what they do and what the health status of Timmins is as well.

That being said the Avs did trade for Kevin Connauton who will probably hold his place while Byram adds some strength and experience.

Not a joke, sarcasm or trying to be fecotious. By the sheer logic of probability, it's probably one of the most difficult trophies to win in nearly any sport at any level of competition. A lot of people are seriously underrating the CHL as a path of development.

I don't believe he can join the Avs this year at all if he goes back to junior. can anyone confirm?

He could win a memorial cup? Work on rounding out his defensive game? World junior gold? Hockey is a team sport, remember.

Hf is a funny place sometimes. I feel like Byram could win the memorial cup, a U20 gold medal, and CHL player of the year next year, but if he scored even one less point than he did the year before, the season would be considered a failure. Lol.

I think they have to send him down, no matter what. I don't think have 3 Ds under 21 if you want to contend is a great idea.

ya there might be a slim chance if it weren't already going to be 1-2 rookies makar and timmins potentially making the roster, 3 would be madness

What do you base this on? His point totals?

Unless heavily sheltered he will struggle big time in the NHL.

He has a number of areas to improve on such as backwards skating, overall compete level in the defensive zone, defensive positioning, puck retrievals etc.

He has some really bad habits at the junior level that will need to be fixed before I'd be comfortable seeing him on the NHL ice if I was a GM/coach.
