I think he'll be the best Dman for Colorado for the next decade...which is saying a lot.

Byram
Makar
Girard

3 top pairing Dmen.

Makar will be better I think but it's fun to have all these guys. Still remember the Greg Zanon, Ryan O'Byrne, Matt Hunwick days... or the Nate Guenin, Nick Holden, Andre Benoit days... it's good to finally have the real deal on the back end.

Girard is not a top pairing D and will likely never be one. The Avs do have a top pairing d though that people just conveniently always forget for some odd reason in Barrie.

Disagree 100% with Girard.

His skating is amazing and can turn on a dime like no one else.

He's also one of the most poised young Dmen ive seen.

The playoffs a few years ago as a rookie, vs nashville, he looked like a calm veteran.

Girard is a stud 1st pairing guy already. And is only getting better.

Also, with Barrie. I just assume he's being traded soon

He is poised and could sakte for days, but his offense is still pretty much non existent, and defensively while he is great in terms of positioning, stick checking and gap control his size does limit him. So no, I would not agree one bit with him being 1st pairing quality right now. As for Ty, all I can say is I hate Darren Dreger with a passion brighter than a thousand suns:

When you have Erik Karlsson and Scott Niedermayer on your team how do you decide who's better?

Makar will be better than Byram, but that's not a strike on the latter one bit. I'd rank Byram similarly to Q. Hughes from last year in terms of overall talent/ranking.

Happy that Byram/Makar is not in my conference.

I'd take him if I were Colorado. Great D can often make average forwards look above average, whereas average D can often make great forwards look average. All about that transition game baby.

It's been said many times, but Colorado really did make out like bandits in this draft getting Byram while still having a quality player on the board to potentially fill the 2C slot down the line. Already my favorite team to watch, and they got that much more dynamic. Sick.

I think Byram could easily become the most memorable player from this draft, especially considering he'll be stepping into a quality roster.

Girard is twice the player Barrie was at his age and defensively he's already much better than Barrie is now. Barrie is a great 2nd pairing dman. He is not, never has been and never will be an acceptable 1st pairing option for a longer stretch.

Edit: I think the recent playoff round against the Sharks has made this very obvious.

Girard is not a stud top pairing D. He is a solid 2nd pair guy with potential.

I'm actually in the camp of splitting them up on different pairs. Having either Makar or Byram on the ice for 40 min + every night is very enticing.

Makar playing in the playoffs showed management that he is absolutely ready to play in the NHL and not only that but be a dominate player. This opens up the door for Byram to also step in. Funny to think the Avs could be icing 2 rookie defenceman at the start of next season. There's going to be some growing pains but the Avs are very close to being a competitor now.

Too bad he played top pair all year then. It’s unreal how even Avs fans don’t understand Girard’s game and value.

Anyway, glad that sanity prevailed and all the rumors that the Avs were going to use 4th overall on a second line center were incorrect. I’ve been a fan of Byram for a long time and this was the best call at 4th. Byram is a great fit for the Avs and perfect partner for Makar. So excite.

Man, you guys struck gold with this pick. Not to mention Newhook at 16, Mutala at 140 and Burzan at 171. Great draft for you guys IMO. I'm scared as a Jets fan how Colorado will look in 3-4 years. Shit I'm scared of how you guys will look next year.

I might be old fashioned, but playing on the top pair and being a top pairing D are two different things. Samuel Girard is a fine defenseman with plenty of room to grow, but he is not a top pairing defeseman.

Playing on the top pair does not make a player a legit top pairing guy, not really a good argument.

#1/#2D are the best players in their position, Sammy G is not at that level right now.
