So, haven't really watched him play, but some leaf fans claim he'd be selected in the 1st round in a re-draft. I felt like that obviously might have been an exaggeration, but what does the general community think? I haven't watched any games to be able to express an opinion.
stats wise he is doing great. I dont know if he would go 1st round right now. He could be in contention to go 1st, however u have to look at who he will replace. If he were to be drafted it would be in the 25th t 30 region most likely. Here are the guys who went in that region; Jack Roslvic, Noah Juulsen, Jacob Larsonn, Anthony Beauviller, Gabriel Carlsonn, and Nick Merekly. It's hard to judge between those guys as 3 of them dont play in the chl. Merekly has been good, but Nielson better imo. Juulsen and him both play in the whl, and i would say that nielsen has been better. Beauviller idk he plays in the qmjhl and is putting up crazy stats, so its hard to say. I think he could be drafted in this region, but right now it is too early to tell. I am very pleased with how good he has been 20 pts in 17 games is amazing considering where he was last year. If the whl vs russia roster was made based on play rather than name and status he should have been on it.

Yeah I'm always on the TML board... Who ever said this?

I'm curious as to why Nielsen was not picked as one of the two replacements for Sanheim on the WHL team that will play the Russians. I'm not one of those fans who thinks his team's prospects are always the best, but Nielsen's stats are certainly very impressive among WHL blueliners. Can somebody who watches that league regularly talk about the non statistical side of things? Thanks

3. Do you have a favourite NHL team?

“The (Calgary) Flames. I like them because they are close to where I grew up, but also because of Dion Phaneuf. I was the water boy for the Red Deer Rebels from when I was six to 14. I got to know Dion then and thought he was a really nice guy and looked up to him. I started cheering for the Flames when he was there, but never switched over to Toronto because I don’t like the Leafs.â€

This should be on every page of this thread until he wears the blue n white :sarcasm:

He'll like them once they start writing his pay cheques

Anyways if all goes well by the time he's on the big team (If he gets there) we should be a good team with plenty to like!

I remember after Draft Day everyone was so hyped up about all of our picks and then they were like "Except Nielson, he's a plug, definitely a Morrison pick and not Hunter, this guy sucks why not take Pilon" turns out he's performing way better than even our 2nd round pick Dermott (Although I really like him too).

Skating probably. Though he probably deserves mention based on how his year has gone. One thing I notice about him when he is beaten, he has tremendous reach to make a recovery. It may not look great but it is effective. Still he has a bomb for a shot that would make him effective on the point.

So by "some Leafs fans" you meant "One Leaf fan". Only saw one guy say it and no one else. It's a bit early to be saying anything like that.

Why are all you bashing me on bringing this up? lol.. no one disagreed with him, in fact, another fan replied "and he was even projected to go later than where he was drafted"

i don't even know why i bother with you kids sometimes

Not bashing, just clarifying. You made it sound like it was a popular opinion amongst Leafs' fans or at least something a chunk of us believed, when it was only one guy.

I guess he's taking after his idol Neon Dion.

Hey if Nielsen could be a Phaneuf for us that you're not paying 7 Million a year I'm all about that.

That's a 3rd round pick becoming a #2/#3 Dman.

Almost halfway through the season and the kid remains tied for first in scoring amongst all Dub defensemen (by virtue of Sanheim being at the WJC). He also seems to be playing a more controlled game, with only 20 PIMS in his last 21 games, and never exceeding more than one minor in any of those games.

Can anyone who watches the WHL with regularity comment on this guy? Is it all a mirage? Seems to have had a very quick progression over the last year and a half, from walking onto the Hurricanes to being drafted in the top 70 to now being an offensive leader in the league.

Not to get too hyped about him, but doesn't his progression kind of remind you of Sanheim? He was a riser all year, got drafted 17th overall and just kept on going on that steep trajectory. Nielsen was playing midget AAA just two years ago, manages to go 65th overall in a deep draft (almost 2nd round) and now he's more than doubled his offensive production while rounding out his defensive game.

Hopefully he keeps following this development although it's unlikely he will

What are the knocks against this kid? From a stat watchers perspective he looks pretty good. His team is stacked though... is he just a product of a good junior team or does he drive the play himself?

Have seen him a number of times live, I would say he is physically advanced in a junior league right now with an OK amount of skill. He is going to have some work to do on polishing up his game to be effective in the AHL next year, if they don't send him for another year in Lethbridge, and earn the trust of the coach night in night out, particularly in terms of reading the play with and without the puck, his focus and game sense can dip in and out sometimes. Of course that is OK at the junior level at times, but the AHL is a big jump... While it is nice to see a jump in production, not sure I would get overly hyped up yet. I would say Valiev's ability to read the game and make the jump last year would be more advanced than Nielsen's at this point.

His game is not near Sanheim's at the moment and they are the same age. The end of Sanheim's draft year had everyone in the Western League's eyes popping out of their head, don't let his 29 pts in that year fool you... he became an absolute force that got exponentially better as that year went on. Not saying Nielsen is bad at all, but no need to compare him to Sanheim at the moment, lots of players get pts in juniors.. it is how they are getting them that you have to observe..
