1. Just out of curiosity why would a backup goalie be any worse then a first line center, top 10 goalie or top pairing defensemen as a GM(all which at some point I seen become GMs before in the NHL)?

2. As much as the pick reeks of Wang, it might actually reek of the new owner(Scott Malkin) who has some business interests in China involving sports wear
Don't disagree with the first point but the maner in which it was done was strange. Usually they have some sort of prior experience like Hextall for example or they are hired in May or June where they have time to assemble a staff (Sakic). Snow was hired after the beginning of free agency after a previous GM was hired by Wang and fired 41 days later. Its not common for a guy to go straight from the roster to GM, and outside of Sakic I can't think of a guy who has control of Hockey ops who was hired with no experience outside of playing, the closest is Shanahan (who had a job with the league and is not that hands on in the day to day). If I'm missing someone recently employed point it out.

Sports team punts on a pick in one of the last rounds? Stop the presses?

If it were any other team, no one would be saying ****. But you know.... LOL Islanders!!!!!111

Right around the time the Islander choose Snow, the Blues signed John Davidson to be the President of Hockey Operations whose only claim to fame other then being a NHL goalie was as a Color Man for tv(albeit a very good one). Brett Hull is another one who seemed to get a management position out of nowhere. Sakic is the most current one that comes to mind though. I know the argument will be a different time and era but I remember Serge Savard, Rogie Vachon and Bobby Clarke getting the fast track to becoming a GM in the 80s.

I can agree though the whole 41 day stint for Neil Smith did make the situation look bad(and let's not forget Pat Lafontaine as well). One thing that always thought got overlooked with Snow is he had a Masters in Business Administration which I am guessing worked big time in his favor with Wang(who probably viewed his degree as savings in other areas)

Anything on this guy?

Trying to find some stats on him for this season and still nothing. It's almost December.

If you're interested in following him, maybe try his school's website. I did a quick google search for it and checked their schedule... they play their first game of the season next Saturday. The season is only about 32 games, it looks like, and goes until late February. I wonder if the Isles will try to find him some hockey after that for the last couple months of hockey season, just to keep developing him. I'm very intrigued to see if they can build a professional hockey player (even for the minors) out of a decent high school player.

EDIT Apparently he players for Phillips Academy now? Their first game is next Friday.

He won't become an NHL player, I wouldn't waste time on him.

Love it, 19 years old and he's already a bust before the Islanders attempt to develop him...

Good ol' HF.

He's 19 years old and still playing prep-school hockey. It's fair to say that he's a huge long-shot to ever make the NHL. He has a long way to go if he wants to carve out an AHL career.

He is 19 years old and has eight points in 27 games in New England Prep School. He has absolutely no shot. There are better prep schoolers who didn't get drafted who have no shot. He was drafted because he's Chinese, not because he's an NHL caliber prospect.

Is he even a legitimate D-1 prospect? Those numbers and scouting reports don't even sound worthy of a H-East offer.

AVPJ has hated Song since he was drafted.

It's a 7th round pick, no-one should lose sleep over it.
Are you kidding me this is a great move. China is an untapped market, to have the distinction of first chinese player drafted could earn them a large fanbase almost for free.

He had 2 assists in 5 games at the WJC-D2B to add to his high school league dominance. I think Misha will study hard and continue to do well in the classroom and later at university. He understands the importance of education and the luxembourg hockey league doesn't pay well enough to live off of anyways.

Yes, this resumes the whole situation pretty well.

Guy should be in the NCAA or being a good player in the USHL by now to even be consireded a legitimate prospect. Making the ECHL for him at this point is a long stretch.

Anyone who thinks that a player drafted so late in such a huge draft as NHL entry draft actually could raise hockey profile in China is frankly deluded. Andong is in no way a Yao Ming of hockey, people.

He's had like half a dozen articles on xinhua alone. He isn't Yao ming but he doesn't need to be. When hockey is on the front page news, people read and go "cool, go islanders, they have a Chinese person" just like even before Yao made it big people were like "yay go houston go china basketball." This gives the islanders name recognition in china, when people see hockey on the television they'll ask "oh is that the islanders?" If you make 50% of all passive and active hockey fans in China islander fans you do the math. This has nothing to do with furthering the sport or whatever, it's about brand recognition for the islanders only in China and it's brilliant.

The islanders have made huge inroads to the Asian market. They simulcast all their games in Mandarin, host a tournament for young Asian players and donate a ton of money and equipment.

It is only a matter of time!

Look at the Varsity and Junior Varsity ( Much more so) as well as Junior Prep hockey rosters and you will see quite a few Asian ( Mostly China & Korea) throughout.

Many of the young Asian students are coming over here for the education and falling in love with the sport and helping promote it back home.

With their incredible work ethic, drive, determination, deep pockets, and population, I would not be surprised if they really make inroads over the next generation or two.

Exeter had a pretty good player from China who left for Canadian Juniors. Kid was good!

Previous poster was correct about the marketing opportunity. Perhaps the Chinese owner of the Islanders had some inside information :)

You must mean Rudi Ying, a kid from Connecticut with Chinese ancestry.

Better prospect than Song at this point but maybe a college career (not division 1 though) not much more at this point.
