Thanks for reminding us he's signed next year, I could have sworn I saw
Leafs have Laughton at 1.5M next season, which is a huge plus. He'll add stability to the 3rd line and give us a versatile physical forward. Treliving finally pulled something pretty interesting.

People that don't think he'll be a center here and do much better than Domi and Kampf are out to lunch. We'll see how he fits though.

1/3m flashed up by TSN but you're right he's not UFA til '26. That, plus the "full" single-team retention for 1.5 years, PLUS the sneaky stealing of 2 late round picks has me convinced this is actually an unbelievable deal by Tree, especially considering how desperate he had to be seeing division rivals stacking up and the absolute necessity to fill a humongous hole at 3C.

Wow, I love this.

That is way too much for a point every three games.
His points aren't his key attributes.

At least Brad was able to get them to eat $1.5M. He needs to clear the deck of Cap Space and make the REAL jump during this years UFAs

I am tired of overpaying with 1st Rounders for a core that never repays their GM. In theory, if it's "sure we are a piece or two" ok, but its been this way for a decade now.

He plays with some jam, blocks shots and is tenacious so if I am Berube I take him and his linemates aside and tell them "you guys are going to be the tenacity on this team and I want you to own it". They can be a critical spark with some critical goals when it matters due to their efforts.

He is also a keeper with another year left they can probably extend him.

I still don't like releasing the 1st but he is only 31, so he could have 5 more prime years left in him.

I hate that we never gave Grebs a fair shot. He would have been a nice power forward on that 4th line to pair with Lorentz as the other power forward on the LW but if they don't believe in him, may as well use him as a trade piece.

I don’t love it but don’t hate it either

Trading a 1st was inevitable, 50% retention with an additional year on his deal is big.

Helps the roster beyond just the add as McMann or Domi can move into the top 6 LW, dropping Jarkrok to the 4th line and Holmberg as the 14th forward when Patches is healthy.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
McMann - Laughton - Robertson
Lorentz - Kampf - Jarnkrok

Is actually pretty solid

Don’t love it, don’t hate it, it was the safe predictable move that doesn’t really move the needle IMO.

On the trade board the initial tweet coming out was Cowan going to Philly in this deal and I was going to go INSANE on Brad for doing it if that were true. Losing Grebenkin and giving up a 1st still sucks, but it makes it a less bad deal. Hope it works out, but not sure how much difference he makes on the Leafs.

Lol. Firstly, he's a Center.

Secondly. You watched Leafs Playoffs games this decade, saw how many times they couldnt they lost 2-1 or 1-0 in Game 7 and thought, hmm, they need more defence????

They need more offence. The defence has always been more than good in the playoffs minus that one Jake Gardener year.
I'm shocked by how polarizing this deal is here for '27 1st protected (I'm assuming that's the condition?); I too was not a huge fan of the deal when it broke but once the details came out I'm a big fan of it. I don't think Laughton is a great 3C but he's definitely much better than any other current options we had and aside from maybe Schenn for the better offense, what better options in this price are realistically available right now?

I was terrified they were going to blow their brains out giving up Cow or Mints ++ for Schenn who's older and has a disgusting contract at double the AAV than Scotty. I take this deal over a top prospect + more all day and twice on Sunday

He’s an average bottom 6 player. He’ll try hard but not a difference maker. That’s still up to the core.
